My Impression of “What is an American?” After reading the document “What is an American?” by St. Jean de Crevecoeur, published in 1782, I think that the author described the Americans very appropriately. In more than two hundred years ago to now, America is still a fusion of people from around the world. People enjoy the liberty and fairness in this country. The author was successful in making me feel that America is a dream continent where people want to live. I am from China and have been living in this country for about eight years. Through my effort, I finally achieved the US citizenship last year. Although I have only lived in this country for few years, I was attracted by the freedom, the democracy, the fairness and the justice of the country. In America, the rich and the poor are not so far, but in China, you can see the very opposite. In China, there are a lot of things are impossible to me, however, in America, I got a lot of helps from others and opportunities. For example, when I was in middle school, I did not like the way the Chinese taught. Moreover, I feel too rigid. I needed to memorize a lot of content if I want to get good grades, it is too hard. In America, everything seems easier, and I only need to comprehend and a lit bit memorize for the test then I can get good grades. Anyway, I feel that the opportunity here is everywhere. Consequently, even though in my age, I still have the opportunity to study at college, to obtain my degree and do not need me to pay even a penny in school. Dinesh D’Souza constructs an argument in his essay “What’s so great about America” that is convincing to the average reader. His essay was published 15 years ago and American culture has seen some changes since then. However, nothing that he mentions specifically in the essay has changed drastically. His extrinsic ethos is strong because he is from India and the audience may perceive that he can compare his knowledge of living elsewhere to an immigrant’s knowledge. This view of looking at America from an outsider’s point of view and how others view living in America is essential in D’Souza’s fundamental argument. He compares living in America to living in other less developed countries and appeals to the common citizen in his style, logic, and development of his essay. His arguments are sound and he convinces the average citizen that America is the best place to live, although his lack of facts and statistics to back up his statements could be seen as a weakness.

The tone of the short story “America and I” changed dramatically over the course of the narrative. The author, Anzia Yezierska, started the story with a hopeful and anxious tone. She was so enthusiastic about arriving in America and finding her dream. In today 's world people who live in America consider themselves as Americans, but to me there is certain qualities that make a person an American. To me being a true American is not based off of what Country they were born in, or what race their parents are, or even if they were immigrated to the United States. People from all over the world would say that maybe people could base this off of someone 's family heritage, or where they were before they came to America. To me there are four specific characteristics that make a person a true American; those three things would be, freedom, individuality, belief in the country, and happiness.

What is an American these ideas are fully expressed from the start as Crevecoeur states, “a modern society offers itself to his contemplation, different from what had hitherto seen.” (605), thus showing that America is a new land never seen before that is worthy of contemplation and admiration. This belief shows the idea of a better place free of old European social divides and stratification and the promise of a better place. Crevecoeur further expands on this going as far as to call America an asylum, a true place of recovery and safety, for European immigrants and their descendants. These early ideas bring forth the foundation for modern beliefs of moral superiority and thus the right for the United States to encourage and push their own ideals upon others. This supremacy is explicitly expressed by the author as seen in, “we are the most perfect society now existing in the world.” (Crevecoeur 606), and displays “James” view that America is indeed better than other cultures and should be treated as such.
