Throughout the year we have read many different novels from many different time periods. We have read from the following five time periods Colonial, Revolutionary, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism. All five of these time periods express the way of life in many different ways. By that I mean that throughout every time period the thought of life is very much so different. Each time period gives you a different perspective on life and also how much different we live now in comparison to any of these time periods with the exception of post modernism. Post modernism is the current way way of writing. These time periods range from 1607-current. We have read and learned the ways of writing from 400 years in the matter of nine months. We truly need more time to truly understand all of these ways of writing.
The colonial time period was the first time period that we had to joy of learning about this year. This time period took place from 1607-1764. This style of writing was very interesting because it pretty much started when the first people were coming to the Americas. It lead us all the way from the first people to settle in colonies to the first president of the United states of America. Well as we know he was. This time period did not take us to his presidency but it did start to talk about George Washington. In this we also had a little bit about the revolutionary war and the planning up to it. I absolutely loved this time period because it was the oldest and most unknown.
Next we have the Revolutionary time period. The Revolutionary time period took place from 1764-1789. This time period took us all the way through the Revolutionary war. We also learned about the major planning leading up to the Revolutionary war. We learned ...

... that were out of this world, quite literally. A novel by Kurt Vonnegut called Breakfast of Champions was about a man named Kilgore Traut. This novel took place on another planet.
The topic that I chose for my research paper was Pot-Modernism. I absolutely love this type of writing. It is filled with Science Fiction and Syfy-ish writings. This makes for a very interesting read and it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. This was the only section that we read all year that I read the story all the way through and not just skim through just so I had a basic idea. I read the story from our post modernism book and not only that I also went and found the whole book and have begun reading it. This section was by far the best read that we had. Don’t get me wrong some of the other sections were really good but Post-Modernism was the most intriguing to me.
Over the centuries, writing has changed, and it is still changing today. There are also many different types of writing that are taught and studied. Three major types are considered the classics. Those three categories are poetry, drama, and prose. Throughout history, writers have stood out from other in their time. The three that will be the focus of the analyzation and comparison are Anne Bradstreet, Thomas Paine, and Phillis Wheatley. All of them have different backgrounds, different styles but have one thing in common. They are all are writers who are considers major contributors to the classics.
From the time period 1775-1800, the American Revolution would impact the United States in political, social and economic ways.
The Revolutionary War has been seen as a fundamental period into American history. The revolution was not just about politics and rights but also about a social revolution. Some historians like Gordon S.Wood see the revolution in social terms:
“Is there a single trait of resemblance between those few towns and a great and growing people spread over a vast quarter of the globe, separated by a mighty ocean?” This question posed by Edmund Burke was in the hearts of nearly every colonist before the colonies gained their independence from Britain. The colonists’ heritage was largely British, as was their outlook on a great array of subjects; however, the position and prejudices they held concerning their independence were comprised entirely from American ingenuity. This identity crisis of these “British Americans” played an enormous role in the colonists’ battle for independence, and paved the road to revolution.
Revolution is briefly described as an attempt to overthrow a government to start a new one. The American Revolution took place between 1775 and 1783 and was a fight for American Independence from England. In 1764, the first of many “Intolerable Acts” were passed. The British Parliament began to excise tax on the American colonies without representation, sparking the great conflict. The British were continuing to incorporate new ways to make more money. England was the most powerful country at the time with an intimidating military, so this wasn’t a hard task to complete. The American Revolution was very Revolutionary because, it jump started the abolition of slavery, it brought about many political and social advances, and served as a stepping stone towards a democracy and a strong centralized government.
Many people see history as a set of facts, or as a collection of stories. The reality, however, is that history is a fluid timeline. Each act of an individual or a group has an effect on others. Each moment in history is a building block that, good or bad, contributes to the stability of the next. This can be seen clearly in American history, as there have been several developments since the 1800’s that have played major roles on the growth of the nation.
Never interfere with Europe was the cry of the founding fathers. Our very first president, George Washington warned us not to get involved with foreign powers. The spirit at the time of our nation’s birth was isolationism. The infant United States of America could not afford to get it’s hand caught in the cookie jar of world affairs. As children grow they get stronger, and the growth of the United States was no different. By the end of the Civil War the United States had muscles to flex. At the time the world was enthralled in the Age of Imperialism, in which a nation’s power was derived from it’s overseas holdings. The United States, who had just proved that it could beat itself up, was not going to be excluded from imperialistic contest the world arena provided. So, the United States was ushered into the Era of Imperialism.
The nineteenth century was a major influence on the writing of today. Romanticism, Realism, and Symbolism were the three key writing movements of this time period. Each one of these movements branched off into several others. The most popular and important ones were Parnassian and Naturalism. Along with these significant movements were some of the important authors of this century: Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, and Jules Verne. Each of these author’s works have contributed to the entertainment and modern technology of our time.
The Realism Movement in the nineteen century provoked society to transition into a whole new mindset in the way they viewed the world. It was more than a movement or a passive trend, but it became more of a lifestyle. In the 18th century, the United States experienced The Enlightenment in which society became more open to becoming more educated. This is a broad interpretation of the time era that said that, “The Enlightenment produced the first modern theories of psychology and ethics…. creating the individual character according to the individual experience” (Bodrogean, Adina). United States transitioned into a Romanticism era that due to the romantic artists and authors common themes at the time were the nature of love, right vs evil, and heroism. Authors were sugar coating their works and about heroes just unrealistic anecdotes about life. The Civil War was a turning point society became aware about the hardships, devastation and fear. Life wasn’t all about hope and optimism. Society would start to question religion and life itself which led to the realist view of the time era. We transitioned into a new era where society encounters the hardships in life and how Romanticism was not all the life was about. In the nineteen century the Realism Movement was uprising in the literature aspect with authors and playwrights such as Langston Hughes, Henrik Ibsen, and Anton Chekhov.
Humans have a tendency to to change with time. Human are the most intelligent creatures and can adapt and survive in any environment. People evolve as time changes. It is human nature to want for new things and new change. United States changed a lot since the mid-1400s till today. Some are good, some are bad. But even though change is inevitable, there are lot things that are still common. Some things never change. From the time Columbus discovered America till today, a lot of things have changed. He is known as the father of this country. Even though he didn’t have the end that he deserved, he is the reason for this great country to bloom out of sheer darkness. Great leaders like Thomas Jefferson have played an important role to shape America to what it is right now. John Winthrop was the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the chief figure among the Puritan founders of New England. He was the one to establish a civilized society in the middle of nowhere and help United States bloom. Thomas Jefferson- author of the Declaration of Independence, third president of United States and the founder of the University of Virginia- crafted the freedom of the United States from the brutal British regime. Jefferson was an exceptionally vivid man, and very politically motivated. He helped found our country, nurturing it along in its youthful, tempestuous beginnings, and he struggled to improve upon it in many ways. As time passes, we see a lot of differences and somewhat similarities in racism, gender equality, freedom, religion, slavery, and standard of life and these factors are responsible for the America we stand upon today.
United States (History), story of how the republic developed from colonial beginnings in the 16th century, when the first European explorers arrived, until modern times. As the nation developed, it expanded westward from small settlements along the Atlantic Coast, eventually including all the territory between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across the middle of the North American continent, as well as two noncontiguous states and a number of territories. At the same time, the population and the economy of the United States grew and changed dramatically. The population diversified as immigrants arrived from all countries of the world. From its beginnings as a remote English colony, the United States has developed the largest economy in the world. Throughout its history, the United States has faced struggles, both within the country—between various ethnic, religious, political, and economic groups—and with other nations. The efforts to deal with and resolve these struggles have shaped the United States of America into the 21st century.
It is important to be proud of who you are and where you have come from. After watching the film American History X, whites are far from proud. We are ashamed to admit that people just like us can act in such a horrible and disillusioned way toward those that are different. As you watch, you see scenes of brutal violence, hear songs of hate and feel the pain of all involved. These acts show the viewers how easily young minds can be influenced to believe anything. Teachers, parents, siblings or any person of authority in a child's life can have this deep of an impact on them. American History X is the story of how powerful an influence people of importance can have upon youth. Adults can be the enemy of many teenagers. Yet when a kid is vulnerable and looking for adoration and love, they can latch onto any adult that makes them feel important or special. Cameron is the first example of the adult filling an empty space. Both Derek and Danny Vinyard, the neo-Nazi brothers of the film, fall for every word Cameron says to them. At one point in the film, Cam makes a comment to Danny about his black school principal Dr. Sweeney. To him, Sweeny is a "manipulative, self-righteous Uncle Tom" for making Dan re- write a civil rights paper because it was about Mein Kampf. Sweeney has his own opinions about Cameron stating that he preys on "insecure, frustrated, and impressionable kids. This assumption is dead on. As the organizer and unofficial leader of the Venice Beach white gang, what the middle-aged Cameron has to say about being a patriot and a proud "white Protestant" fills a void for the kids. Many, as seen most apparently in Seth, the overweight, clumsy, and dim-witted teen, have low self-esteem and lacking hom...
For example, during the Great Depression, a hard time for many, people were seeking distractions from their troubles, and such brought on a focus on escapist and humor themes. Furthermore, as mentioned previously, literary pieces focused on the lack of progress and the want of a simpler, more pure lifestyle as was once had. Literary periods have come and gone; romanticism, for example, filled with poetry and idealisms, with artistic expression that wouldn’t have been as tolerable in earlier times, or naturalism, which found expression almost completely in the novel, concerned with searching and discovering the causes for a person’s actions or beliefs (2). Literature has changed and developed, just as our society and our history have.
American history, though nowhere near as epic as the history of Europe, is wrought with its own heroes and legendary personalities. The three most important span political, economic, and social borders. In its 300 years, the United States has not seen finer heroes than Benjamin Franklin, Alan Greenspan, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Their contributions in politics, regulation of the US economy, and roles in racial diversity, these legends have no precedent. Benjamin Franklin contributed to the culture of the US through his literature and his political presence. Franklin was born in the early 18th century, when England still had a grip on the politics of the colonies. Following the revolutionary war, in which he had important diplomatic duties, Franklin was one of the key framers of the Constitution. By then, Franklin was a ripe 81 years old, in the twilight years of his life. During his youth, he was an important author, contributing to one of the first papers, and also writing the Poor Richard’s Alamack. His autobiography is also a very important work to this day. Franklin was also an important scientist of his time. His personality influenced many of the leaders of the baby American government. This coupled with his exceptional achievement made Franklin a great inspiration to the people of his time that lasts to this day. Alan Greenspan is a recent figure in history, but his impact on the present and future economics of America is incalculable. The chairman of the...
