The United States was maturing into an industrial economy. Freedom, Equality, and Democracy where main goals for this period in time. The talk of “better classes,” “respectable classes,” and “dangerous classes” were the main concentration in public discussions. Traditional definitions of freedom were barred by poverty living along side the edge of growing class millionaires. The link now between freedom and equality was based on the skills and wealth and not by hard work. They started to devise plans on how to make men content with the inequality in distribution inevitable in society. “Liberal” reformers stood up with their belief’s of making everyone in society equal. Many Gilded Age reformers feared that lower class would use democracy to advance their own interests. Democracy was becoming a threat to the individual liberty and rights of property they have known. Which brought about the idea of Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism was the idea of natural superiority of some groups over other groups. If you were born wealthy you will always be known as wealthy and if you were born poor you don’t have a chance to come up. Growing up in The United States, people are given this idea of an American Dream. Almost every child is raised to believe they can become and do anything they want to do, if one works hard enough. However, a majority of people believe that there is a separation of class in American society. Gregory Mantsios author of “Class in America-2009” believes that Americans do not exchange thoughts about class division, although most of people are placed in their own set cluster of wealth. Also political officials are trying to get followers by trying to try to appeal to the bulk of the population, or the middle class, in order to get more supporters. An interesting myth that Mantsios makes in his essay is how Americans don’t have equal opportunities.
The era that marked the end of civil war and the beginning of the twentieth century in the united states of America was coupled with enormous economic and industrial developments that attracted diverse views and different arguments on what exactly acquisition of wealth implied on the social classes in the society. It was during this time that the Marxist and those who embraced his ideologies came out strongly to argue their position on what industrial revolution should imply in an economic world like America. In fact, there was a rapid rise in the gross national product of the United States between 1874 and 1883. This actually sparked remarkable consequences on the political, social and economic impacts. Various reformers like Andrew Carnegie, Henry George and William Graham Sumner perceived the view on the obligation of the wealthy differently. This paper seeks to address on the different views held by these prominent people during this time of historical transformations.
To summarize, for the most part, the reformists of the early 1800’s sought to make America an idealistic democratic nation. Some fought for their rights, some fought for reform of society, and some battled for the sake of the future through education; but all reformists had one idea in mind, and that was to make the United States a more fair and democratic nation for everyone to appreciate.
In Mantsios’ “Class in America” he provides us with four myths about the United States. In one of these myths the idea is brought up that the United States is, at its core, a classless society. It is also states that whether rich or poor, everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. The myth also states that health care and education are provided to everyone regardless of their financial stability. This idea about a classless society is exactly what Mantsios claims it to be, a myth. It is untrue to state that everyone is equal in the eyes of the law, and to believe that whatever differences exist in financial standing are insignificant. There are clear distinctions between different groups of people depending on their economic and social standing.
The social and economic developments of the last quarter of the nineteenth century drastically changed the United States. The business world changed once industrialization was introduced to the world. Opportunities grew as people heard about the boundless American opportunities. Immigrants from all races flooded the cities which doubled in population from 1860-1900 (Barnes and Bowles, 2014, p. 34). However, as industries grew, owners prospered off the hard work of others. People started to feel they were not being treated fairly. People had to work harder and longer for their money. After the civil war, the United States had deep social divisions that strictly divided the classes. This period of time was called the Gilded Age. The economy was shifting more and more towards an industrial one, manufacturing in the United States was more than the greater powers of Europe combined. With these industries, there were huge monopolies over steel, oil, and various other markets. The wealthy over these corporations had much influence in the government and politics. All the while, the lower classes were led to believe that they had something wrong with them. They were told they had a “lack of character” that prevented them from being successful (Foner pg. 121). The upper class as well as many economists believed that being successful from unskilled labor was impossible. They believed that entrepreneurial skills were the only thing that would allow people to become successful. The labor movement vehemently disagreed with this.
