The later part of the twentieth century was marked by considerable changes. Changes were in music, art, thinking, technology, design, communication, politics and architecture. It was an era of free thinking and instant communication which fuelled new artistic concepts and a reassessment of values.
The 1960's saw the emergence of the first of the baby boomer generation as late teenagers and young adults able to make their own lifestyle and value judgements. This generation had grown up in relative safety and generous circumstances with abundant work and many opportunities. The Vietnam War was not considered favourably by the younger generation who resisted conscription and protested about the reasons for the war. Many young people however went to the war and did their duty for their country but received little support from their own generation for this duty.
Music was the instant message for the younger generation. Music coming out of England and the USA talked about concepts such as love, beauty, peace and a world unity. Unfortunately these same musicians suffered at the hands of instant fame and a lack of privacy and often took drugs to escape their conditions.

The thoughtless use of the environment was questioned and hippy communes experimented with communal living styles, alternative energy systems, low cost and low energy materials and saw the natural environment as an integrated whole. Concepts of a bio diverse garden horticultural environment that could provide food and sustain the occupants became a difficult ideal. Communes and alternative housing sprang up around Australia and in particular in places such as Byron Bay, Nimbin, and parts of
The 1960’s was a time society fantasized of a better world. However, the horrors of the Vietnam War soon became evident; the mass amounts of death occurring because of the war became a reality. It created a “movement”, especially in American colleges, in order to stand up for what they believed to be “right”. By 1970, many Americans believed sending troops to Vietnam was a mistake, however there were also various individuals becoming increasingly critical of the student antiwar movement
Music’s role on society has changed drastically through the course of its history as it has become ever so increasingly expansive. Many of the previous musical movements were only for the wealthy as entertainment
During the 1960s and the early 1970s, music reflected the political and social changes that America was undergoing at the time. Some of these major changes included the African-American civil rights movement and the conflict over America’s role in the Vietnam War. During these hard times, people turned to music for hope, peace, happiness and answers.
The 1950s seemed like a perfect decade. The rise of suburbs outside cities led to an expansion of the middle class, thus allowing more Americans to enjoy the luxuries of life. The rise of these suburbs also allowed the middle class to buy houses with land that used to only be owned by more wealthy inhabitants. Towns like Levittown-one of the first suburbs- were divided in such a way that every house looked the same (“Family Structures”). Any imperfections were looked upon as unfavorable to the community as a whole. Due to these values, people today think of the 1950s as a clean cut and model decade. This is a simplistic perception because underneath the surface, events that took place outside the United States actually had a direct effect on our own country’s history. The rise of Communism in Russia struck fear into the hearts of the American people because it seemed to challenge their supposedly superior way of life.
Throughout history, music have defined or depicted the culture and social events in America. Music has constantly played an important role in constituting American culture, where people have expressed themselves through music during flourishing and turbulent times. In the 1930’s, Swing music created a platform for audiences to vent their emotions in the midst of Great Depression and political unrest. Such strong relationship between music and culture can be seen throughout history, especially in the sixties.
The 1960’s and early 1970’s were a time that eternally changed the culture and humanity of America. It was a time widely known for peace and love when in reality; many minorities were struggling to gain a modicum of equality and freedom. It was a time, in which a younger generation rebelled against the conventional norms, questioning power and government, and insisting on more freedoms for minorities. In addition, an enormous movement began rising in opposition to the Vietnam War. It was a time of brutal altercations, with the civil rights movement and the youth culture demanding equality and the war in Vietnam put public loyalty to the test. Countless African-Americans, Native-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, women, and college students became frustrated, angry, and disillusioned by the turmoil around them.
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
In this essay I will talk about the music in the 60's, noteworthy that in some cases I will compare some situations with the Latino-American situation, I know is has nothing to do with the topic, but who is the guy who is writing in this sheet of paper? ME, Is my essay and I will write what I want (This is an example of Freedom Of Expression, we will see it more on that later)
As World War Two came to a close, a new American culture was developing all across the United States. Families were moving away from crowded cities into spacious suburban towns to help create a better life for them during and after the baby boom of the post-war era. Teenagers were starting to become independent by listing to their own music and not wearing the same style of clothing as their parents. Aside from the progress of society that was made during this time period, many people still did not discuss controversial issues such as divorce and sexual relations between young people. While many historians regard the 1950s as a time of true conservatism at its finest, it could really be considered a time of true progression in the American way of life.
The American society in the 1950’s saw tremendous increases in population and affluence. This addition, termed the Baby Boom, expanded the middle class and introduced new ideas of prosperity to the United States. With new conventions, such as bank loans and credit lines, the spirit of American commercialism thrived. The following decade, however, brought about many changes in the nation’s social, political, economic and philosophical way of life. With the push for social programs and greater equality for the disenfranchised, the progressive movement in America thrived.
There is many decades that people would call the Decade of change but the 1960’s is the decade that changed the most. The 60’s was a very crazy and wild time because of the historical events that happened. Everyone was starting to experiment with LSD and Other kinds of drugs. There was also a huge surge of musical history that had happened in the 60’s that changed the History of music forever. The 60’s is what I like to call the best decade in history. The 60’s is the decade of change because of the political, technological, and Musical advances that happened in America. The music industry went from poor to the number one hit in America. The technology went from nothing to systems that would change the world, and last but not least America went from a place where blacks were not accepted to everyone getting along. It is crazy to see how the 60’s changed the history of America.
During a time when the population was only around 132 million, versus today’s 318 million, and swing music would fill every room, the children were happier and families were richer. With no problems, society focused on entertainment and passion, leading to a decade of fads reminisced today. Inspiring today’s fashion and music, the 1940’s played an instrumental role in creating history in the American culture. While we still have reminiscence of the $43 billion debt from back then in our trillions, moments such as jitterbug dances and Casablanca reruns define the Swing Era. With life expectancy up in the sixties, people had years of life to live and make the world their own. With discoveries beyond Antarctica and news greater than Truman’s next
Music has been very influential in every decade in America. When people listen to music, it influences emotions and senses. Words that are put into music are easily memorized and get stuck into the listener’s head. During the 60’s, rock music was extremely popular. Artists such as Janis Joplin and the Beatles were extremely popular. The music highlighted the message of anti-war, drugs, and free-love. Music is a very influential and powerful thing.
With its first publish dating back to 1865, The Nation rests to be the United States' oldest continuously published weekly magazine, known by many as the “ flagship of the Left” for its strong liberal focus; whereas, the The National Review has been exalted by the public as a premiere source of conservative opinion.
What is to be learned from our generation? There does not appear to be a clearly defined movement being promoted like the antiwar movement of the sixties and seventies. Our generation will leave a legacy, or a lesson to be learned. Through the generations we have learned much; drug awareness, responsibility, and safe sex were all changes faced by generations following the previous generation's lifestyles. Our children will face different lifestyles that we are facing now, and the popular music of their time will surely shape their behavior and attitude to fit their generation.
