Identify a marketing issue related to a company, product, or brand: American Apparel (AA) is a vertically integrated company, which means that its designs, manufactures, sells to other retailers and sells directly to consumers. During the past year the company filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy out of the blue. Selling most of its inventory within a few days. The brand was known for its “iconic,” “clean,” “simple,” and “timeless styles, each item available in a variety of colors. Though one of the biggest factors of the brand was that everything was made in the USA; sweatshop free, cutting out the middle man causing prices to be a little higher than other brands of the same nature (Forever 21, H&M, etc.).
The marketing issue relating to American Apparel has to deal with their brand image and their target segment. For one, they have a brand that caters to a younger crowd of “hipsters,” however, the prices and the selections they offer their customers doesn’t equate. The segment they aim to target, is also the same targeted by Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and H&M. The latter stores all excelling in competition either due to affordable pricing ranges, unique product identities, or different production processes. On the twenty-first of August, our Wearable History class took a trip to downtown Bowling Green, to visit Mosaic Confinement Studio. The studio had an old-fashioned vibe, and was like a vintage-garment haven. There, we were asked to choose a piece that we thought was vintage, identify the time period it actually came from, and also take some additional notes on the style and the garment’s details. After searching through multiple racks, the first piece I found was a lace blazer. It turned out to only be vintage-inspired, so I went searching again. I came across a few other pieces, but nothing was really jumping out at me. Eventually, I came across a lavender dress that immediately made me think of Julia Roberts in “Mystic Pizza”, and I knew I found my garment.
Present day Federated consists of both Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s stores and operates in 34 states as well as Guam and Puerto Rico. While Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s provide both private and national brands and are similar in merchandising categories (men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, home décor, shoes, beauty, and accessories), they differ greatly in culture. Bloomingdale’s, being more upscale, targets consumers that are more concerned with trend and quality than they are price. Macy’s targets the more value oriented consumer and represents a broader Federated clientele. Macy’s represents 423 of the 459 Federated locations while Bloomingdale’s represents only 36 locations. Because I can better relate to the value conscious consumer of the Macy’s division and because they represent such a large portion of Federated, I will further explore their current characteristics and behaviors that suggest that they possess qualities of both monopolistic competition and oligopolies.
Since the 1970’s Urban Outfitters INC. has produced a wide selection of clothing brands for the younger generation. Urban Outfitters INC. includes Free People, BHLDN, Anthropologie, Terrain and Urban Outfitters. The beginning of Urban Outfitters INC. started out in Philadelphia for college students, their fun loving affordable clothing appealed to students who were living under a college budget. It’s known for its “hipster” and “free thinking” clothing that would appeal to the younger generation. However in present day it seems as if the original purpose of Urban Outfitters INC. has been lost. The prices of clothing at Urban Outfitters and at their sister stores has increased drastically to where college students can barely afford it. Throughout the recent years Urban Outfitters INC. has found itself in multiple issues that effects the sales of their stores. For instance being reprimanded for their designs, being sued for stolen designs and having a president who supports anti-gay polictians. Considering all the negative aspects to Urban Outfitters and the loss of their traditional purpose Americans should not support Urban Outfitters Inc.
In this case, it seemed that these non-target consumers had no effect on the brand’s intended target market. So in response, Timberland kept its advertising focused on the brand’s traditional target, while urban consumers continued to buy Timberland products. The brand continued to grow, achieving global sales of over $1 billion by 2007 (Fitch 2009). The adoption of a brand by a non-target market does not always have such positive results. American Eagle Outfitters is a fairly new company but they are doing extremely well because they have a clear grasp of who their target market is.
