America by Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou acclaimed poet and author wrote a poem entitled “America”. The poem offers words of truth of our country America. The poem begins, “ The gold of her promise, has never been mined.” America, promises us that all men are created equal. The first problem with the promise is we are not all men. The gold of her promise, address equality. Although it is promised to all in this country, its never delivered, when discrimination, of race and gender are still existent. “Her borders of justice, not clearly defined.” We all have our opinions on what justice is, because circumstances differ when we speak of justice in the terms of punishment, to make up for ones wrong doing. Yet, the borders of justice are not one size fits all. It’s a well know fact that our prisons are highly populated with the Black race. It’s, not that the black race commits more crimes but they are more severely punished for the crimes they commit.

In conclusion, finding out the truth, the facts, and the goal of justice should be the main purpose of any civil case. Sadly, the judicial process gets in the way. The legal system becomes unjust and in some cases, justice is never served. Seeing the story unfold and reading about the struggle between wealth and power and justice is exciting, yet saddening. The book matters and should be read by all, from people who are studying the legal system to people who are not. It is an emotional and engaging book. It can’t be forgotten. One man can make the biggest difference and finding the truth is much more fulfilling than any riches.

Often times in today's society, we stumble upon instances of racism and oppression. About 60 years ago, innocent civilians were poorly treated and ridiculed on a day to day basis during the time of segregation. The courage and strength of those men and women was indescribable. So now we ask ourselves, what was it like? In Maya Angelou's “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” Maya effectively uses multiple writing strategies to bring awareness to the prominently apparent issues of racism and oppression that still exist in our society using imagery, pathos, and strong diction to craft her overall message.
This problem affects everyone, but only benefits four types of people; the judges, the lawyers, the clients paying thousands more to the lawyers to win their case, and the police. Judges today are not playing fair, and they are accepting bribes from equally corrupt lawyers that are desperate to win a case and improve their case winnings over their losses. The lawyers are asking for more money from the clients so that they can secretly hand over cash to the lawyers and ask for “favors” in the courtroom. With all of this injustice, comes fear implanted in the client, who is then willing to spend more on a lawyer to guarantee their success in a case; “fear and injustice equals more money for lawyers and judges”(Sachs).
Maya Angelou was a grammy-winning author, memoirist, poet, and a civil right activist. As Maya Angelou once said “ I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” This reflects a lot on her poem Caged Bird because she will never forget how the people in her town made her feel like her feet were tied and her wings were clipped. As an African American Angelou suffered at the hands of racial prejudices and discrimination as she was growing up whether it was in her town or in her own home. In her poem Caged Bird Angelou talks about how the free bird doesn’t have a care in the world, but she also talks about how the caged bird longs to someday be free. Although Maya Angelou died as a well-known famous poet and used her knowledge and her words to overpower racial discrimination she grew up in an oppressed society because of darkness, pain, and fear.
This poem is written from the perspective of an African-American from a foreign country, who has come to America for the promise of equality, only to find out that at this time equality for blacks does not exist. It is written for fellow black men, in an effort to make them understand that the American dream is not something to abandon hope in, but something to fight for. Maya Angelou lived through a time where she was discriminated against for not only her race but also her gender. In her poem “Still I Rise” Angelou sarcastically talks about how no matter what is thrown at her she will rise above it and she will do it with resilience and confidence. Her poem discusses racism and sexism and gives minorities and women a sense of hope to overcome and endure both of those things. That very brilliant quote relates to a very strong woman by the name of Maya Angelou. Angelou is “America’s most visible black female autobiographer and speakers” (scholar Joanne M. Braxton). She is known for her speeches, poems, and books, but what stood out to me the most was her 1993 inauguration speech when Bill Clinton was sworn into the White House. Maya Angelou is a phenomenal poet of the 21st century whose words have impacted many individuals. Angelou’s personal past experiences have allowed her to feel pain and have given her the ability to connect with those who have hardship in their lives. Her main audience is african american women however, anyone can find inspiration within her words. Her style allows for people of all ages to connect with her and her poetry. Maya’s passion for writing is tangible as well has her experience as a writer. Without her, modern poetry would not be the same.
The United States is known as the “land of the free” attracting many immigrants to achieve the “American Dream” with the promise of equal opportunity for all. However, many groups, whose identities differed from the dominant American ideology, discovered this “American dream” to be a fantasy. In the 1960s, movements for civil rights in the United States of America included efforts to end private and public acts of racial discrimination against groups of disadvantaged people. Despite the efforts made to empower the disadvantaged groups, racialization and class differences prevailed leading to social inequality. The novel My Beloved World is an autobiography written by Sonia Sotomayor illustrating her early life, education, and career path, explaining the unresolved contradictions of American history and how they continue on in society. Prejudice against certain socioeconomic classes and races prevented equal opportunity. Sotomayor’s text explicates the racialization and class differences that many Puerto Ricans experience while pursuing a higher education, revealing the contradictions between the American promise of equal opportunity and discrimination against Puerto Ricans.
“Dead Men’s Path” by Chinua Achebe. In this short story “Dead Men’s Path,” Chinua Achebe gives the protagonist an exciting chance to fulfill his dream. Michael Obi was officially headmaster of Ndume Central School, which was backward in every sense. He had to turn the school into a progressive one, however the school received a bad report when the supervisor came to inspect.
The two poems I will be discussing are My fathers is a simple man and Life doesn't frighten me. The authors of the poems are Luis Omar Salinas and Maya Angelou. The overall message that both poems are trying to get us the readers to understand is life is not always easy. Life throws things at you when you least expect it at times it would be good things or bad things. But we'll both poems are pretty much saying is that no matter what life throws at you and the obstacles you're going to face in life never give up don't let life itself let you fall don't let life itself let you feel like you can't do anything or be somebody because if you try so hard to make your life easier it's only going to get harder.

In the poem, “I, Too, Sing America,” Langston Hughes says, “I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the in the kitchen when company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Inequality discrimination is an occurrence issue in the society. In Maya Angelou’s essay “Graduation,” she presents a form of discrimination based on how the African Americans were treated by whites; implying to short descriptions that she extends in her essay of racism and discrimination in her society was based on her school experience. Such as how they were not valued for their educational intelligence but only physically. For example, “Like travelers with exotic destinations on their minds, the graduates were remarkably forgettable…After tests were returned and grades given, the student body, which acted like an extended family, knew who did it well, who excelled, and what piteous ones had failed” ( Maya Angelou 21). As this quote stated that some professors gave changes to those who were high class by accepting their tardiness and late work just because of their race. This represents crucial unfair act. Same as the central school (white school) been established for “improvements”, a “well-known artist” was going to go to teach them about art, and other supplies in which makes them better because they have everything to be well known as an improvement great school as for Stamps school; Donleavy acknowledge that is possible for African American to learn successfully but they only lie in sports or service worker (Angelou 27).
