Ambition is a powerful tool to have. It breaks people down and mends them into stronger people. Even during the low times, ambition calls out to you and encourages you to do hard work to reap the benefits. Ambition also has consequences if misused. It can lead to a lonely life as with too much ambition, you block people out of your life and focus solely on yourself. You could be scarred from your ambitions if you fail after putting in that energy and work. Ambition is valuable if used correctly because it can lead people to their goals and make them blind to their everyday surroundings. Ambition fuels people to reach their goals in many different ways, but they all come from one thing. The desire to be better than our past selves. Maybe it’s …show more content…
“The Company Man” by Ellen Goodman dives deeper into Phil, who is dead by the end of the story due to overworking. Phil had an ambition with his job and even though that ambition is good, he ended up dead due to not taking in other things. Phil worked above the limits of his body, and didn’t pay attention to his health, and his family, which he never realized as he worked to death. People commented that “He worked six days a week, five of them until eight or nine at night, during a time when his own company had begun the four-day week for everyone but the executives. Phil was overweight and nervous and worked too hard. If he wasn’t at the office, he was worried about it. Phil was a Type A, heart attack natural. You could have picked him out in a minute from the lineup” (Goodman). By focusing on one thing for a long period of time, you disregard all the other important things in your life, as health is just as important as money. Something people say is that health is wealth and what that means is that you can get more out of your life if you have better health. Health can also go into many different ways, like mental health and emotional health, but for Phil’s situation, he didn’t take good care of it. That ambition took Phil so far that he broke down from work every day until he died. One thing to learn from ambition is that it isn’t good to be so focused that
In today’s society you either have to work hard to live a good life, or just inherit a lump sum of cash, which is probably never going to happen. So instead a person has to work a usual nine to five just to put food on the table for their families, and in many cases that is not even enough. In the article, “Why We Work” by Andrew Curry, Curry examines the complexities of work and touches on the reasons why many workers feel unsatisfied with their jobs. Barbara Ehrenreich writes an essay called, “Serving in Florida” which is about the overlooked life of being a server and the struggles of working off low minimum wages. Curry’s standpoint on jobs is that workers are not satisfied, the job takes control of their whole life, and workers spend
Any goal in life is achieved through ambition, fueled by determination, desire and hard work. Ambition maybe a driving force to success or to a pit of failure, the path chosen by an individual determines the end. Remember that any goal to be fulfilled needs desire, desire that strives to do good or greedy desire that is selfish. Also the actions that contribute to our ‘hard work’ need to be morally and ethically right to enjoy the sweet success. However, when the desire and determination is stronger than conscience, many tend to fail often reach or don’t reach what they strived for, leaving them emotionally or even physically dead. The inner lying consequence of ambition is clearly stated by Napoleon, he quotes “Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principals which direct them”. The undesirable consequence of ambition can be observed in the lives of the protagonists of ‘The Great Gatsby and Macbeth. This describes the direction in which ambition is driven could change the end result, it is simply based on the individual itself rather than the dream they seek to achieve. Therefore, the strong drive of ambition helps the seeker attain their goal but greedy desires and wrong paths taken eventually lead to downfall.
Ambition is a force that helps drive societies forward. When the power of a nation falls in the hands of a single person ambition takes many spectacular and ugly forms. It can be both the making and destruction of that person but regardless of the net effect, ambition will have deep socio-economic, political, and cultural roots. Three dictators were taken by ambition and it pushed them into a costly, long, battle to obtain and maintain power. Those leaders are Macbeth, Idi Amin, and, Napoleon Bonaparte.
Therefore the ambition and desire is both a want and a need, it brings peace and comfort but also invades our decision making to figure out the fastest way to meet our goal, which in effect can harm family, friends, and one’s self without guilt.
Having just enough ambition is what will drive people to be great and do great. Ambition is what makes us accomplish things without backing down until we get to where we want to be. Beowulf not once ever doubted himself, he did consider that things could happen but he had the upmost confidence that he would
Many people have different definitions of the two words, “greed” and “ambition”; some may say they are negative traits and some may say they are positive traits. Ambition is the burning desire and urge to aspire to complete your goals or succeed. Ambition can be a great thing if it is used to better a situation, but sometimes it is used negatively. Another word that can be a positive force or a negative force to acquire something is greed. Greed is something almost everyone has. It is the selfish desire to acquire more than one needs. Greed can also be a positive thing, but normally it is a defective trait, that brings out the worst in people. It results in the need for more and it increases, causing the person to never be satisfied. There
Embedded within the syntax of “The Company Man”, Ellen Goodman uses syntax to create a nostalgic tone. Between her combination of tactical dashes and specific details, the columnist manages to fabricate a tone that signals remembrance and passive aggression towards Phil. The manner that Ellen describes Phil in, with phrases including how he “worked himself to death” and putting quotes around “dearly beloved” as if he didn’t actually love his children is very passive aggressive. Ellen recalls Phil in such a descriptive tone, writing how he’s, “overweight by 20 or 25 pounds” and knowing about his “golf outings” as work for him is proving her negative nostalgia.
Ambition is defined as a strong will to achieve something, and at times, it will inspire success. But, what is truly considered success? In William Shakespeare’s work Macbeth, ambition is one of the most prominent themes. To begin with, Lady Macbeth’s ambition sparks treacherous ideas, which results in her own tragedy. Furthermore, Macduff’s ambition is treated as impulsive thinking, leading to his tragic experience.
Ambition is the driving force in many people’s lives; it is what motivates individuals to work hard and accomplish their goals. By definition, ambition is a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. Without ambition, nobody would be motivated to excel in their lives or strive to be better, but ambition can drive individuals to do horrific things, just so that they can move up on the totem pole. Joseph Stalin was a highly ambitious person who often killed others that he deemed a “threat” so that he could remain in power; throughout the entirety of his dictatorship, he was plagued by the psychological effects of his ambition that drove him to commit these monstrous acts.
...rn day society, illusive ambitions can be incredibly detrimental, just as they are demonstrated to be in Macbeth. Ambitions, if they are untamed, can be an impediment to free will; they can overpower your good conscience, possibly leading you into causing death and destruction. They can also corrupt one’s mental health, while practically morphing that person’s perception of reality into something demonstrably wrong and twisted. Finally, they can boost ones ego to a point where that person is engulfed and imprisoned in the vehemence of their own denial, which can ultimately bear fatal consequences. If one’s hopes and desires are innately destructive, then it logically follows that that one’s ambition is also innately destructive; be wary of one with an immense ambition.
Ambition is a strong desire or drive to succeed or achieve something. It can help a person to strive at getting something they want. If someone wants something badly enough, their ambition will help them not give up until they achieve at getting what they want. But also, if a person has too much ambition, it could make that person do destructive things to get what they want and they will hurt anyone or anything that gets in their way.
Ambition is a tool that can help someone succeed and surpass expectations. A person who strives to be the best at what they do has the will to work harder. Therefore, it is clear that ambition is a stepping stone to success. This quality can open many doors and can create opportunities, but seizing the moment that has been given is what counts (Source C). Someone who is truly ambitious won’t perform anything less than perfect which some may argue is harmful. Neel Burton briefly explains that pure ambition can soon become a toxic obsession; not ever wanting to fail can cause dissatisfaction which will eventually lead to severe depression and anxiety (Source G). However, failure is bound to happen to everyone, therefore someone with enough gratitude and appreciation can get over it and continue to strive (Source G).
An ambition is an eager, and sometimes an inordinate, desire for preferment, honor, superiority, power, or the attainment of something. To obtain object or goal that is immensely desired. It comes from the Middle English word “ambicioun,” meaning and excessive desire for power, money or wealth. Ambition is something that everyone, no matter their age or cultural background, has instinctively. Ambition can be a driving force for success, or in some cases a road to failure. Through ambitious undertakings we can set goals and find ourselves and our God-given talents.
When I think of ambitious people I think of dreamers. These are the people with hopes of one day conquering and ruling the world single handedly, and having everything work out just the way they want it to. I also feel that an ambitious person is a confident one. And because of this, they feel there is nothing they cannot accomplish. There are they types of people who often set goals so high and glamorous that they often set themselves up for disappointment when things do not work out their way. This, I guess, would qualify to be one of the disadvantages of ambition. But since I am the kind of person who believes that the sky is the limit, and if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything, I choose to stay away from the disadvantages of ambition for the time being.
Ambition is defined as a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. Some may look at this to as a bad thing or a good thing. Some may say that i moderation it is fine. For example, in Julius Caesar, Brutus kills Caesar for having too much ambition. A tragic fall is considered when the main character lets something less than what they are bring them down. When they let their flaw get to them and drive them towards their own demise. The reason people see this is a bad thing is because it can lead to making the person do bad things that will result in possibly dangerous consequences. The reason why some may think ambition is good is because sometimes it is the only thing motivating someone
