When using an Amber Alert your case must hit a certain criteria for it to be issued. Each state has their own criteria for issuing Amber Alerts, but the Protect Act (which passed in 2003) made sure that all AMBER Alerts must all follow a certain standard. A.M.B.E.R Alert Guidelines • Law enforcement must confirm that an abduction has taken place The local police must make sure that abduction has for sure been taken place and it isn’t just a hoax. They will have to have met with at least one eye witness (if they are any) interview them to see what information they can give towards the case. If there are not any eye witnesses they must at least speak to the family of the child to confirm they’re missing and/or speak to whoever made the call or report of the child missing. • The child is at risk of serious injury or death Believe it or not having your child missing isn’t necessarily enough to issue an AMBER alert. If your child was seen being taken by a known felon or there was violence during the abduction then they will be deemed urgent enough to administer an AMBER Alert. • There is sufficient descriptive information of child, captor or captor’s vehicle to issue an
Christine Jessop was a nine year old girl who after bring dropped off by the school bus at her home in Queensville, decided to ride her bike to the park nearby to meet with her friends. After stopping to buy some gum at the local store, she was last seen walking her bike up her driveway by her friend Kim Warren. She did not keep her appointment with her friend at the park, and would never be seen alive again (Anderson & Anderson, 2009). This small town instantly became involved in the search for the missing girl, but with very little evidence to go on time passed, and hope began to diminish for the safe return home of Jessop. On New Year’s Eve 1984, eighty-nine days after Jessop went missing, her body was found badly decomposed in a bush by Fred Patterson fifty-five kilometers from Queensville. An autopsy would later revival that she was raped and mutilated (Anderson & Anderson, 2009). The police still did not have a suspect in the case nor did they have any leads, but now that her body was found the police and the small town were the topic of media, increasing pressure on the police to figure out what had happened to this little girl.
January 13, 1996, nine-year-old Amber Rene Hagerman was abducted while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas. That afternoon, Amber, and her brother were at their Grandparents house. Amber Hagerman, and her five-year-old brother, Ricky, pedaled their bicycles to an abandoned grocery store. This was a typical place for children to ride their bikes because it was an abandoned parking lot with lots of room to play and ride. Minutes later, Ricky turned to head back home, about a block away. Jim Kevil, a 78-year-old retiree, stood in his backyard not far...

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 was established because an American boy was abducted form a Florida shopping mall and was later found murdered. The act was signed into law by George W. Bush on July 27, 2006. This act is established to protect children from sexual exploitation and violent crime to prevent child abuse and child pornography to promote internet safety. This act is also known as the sex offender registration and notification act. It was established with the intention to strengthen laws related to child sexual predators. This law was instructed for each state and/or territory to apply criteria’s for posting offenders data on the internet.
The following research will display an overview of the process in Texas on how sex offenders are registered along with the notifications that are followed after registration. Texas, as many other states, has a procedure which requires sex offenders to register with the local law enforcement agencies at the time of their discharge. In addition to registration, they must also comply with further probation regulations. Research has concluded that there are four basic phases of registration and notification. Beginning with offender notified, following the offender registration and community notified and ending with public notification
Many things that happen in this world are scary and totally out of our control. Child abduction is a horrifying and life changing event that has terrified many children, parents and love ones. Child abduction is every parent's worst nightmare. It could happen in the grocery store, yard or even your child's school. The horrifying truth is that child abduction could happen almost anywhere in the world. However, the most crucial part about their whole experience can be once they’re rescued and brought back to their loved ones. Many survivors tend to feel unsafe and in most cases, and just can’t be the same person.
In the United States, nearly 800,000 children are reported to be missing every year (“Key Facts”). Approximately 40% of these children are either “killed or never recovered” (“When a child…”). Elizabeth Smart, a victim of abduction, was not part of this statistic. She was finally rescued and reunited with her family after nine months of being held captive. Ten years after her abduction, she released her memoir My Story. In her memoir, Elizabeth Smart stated she used her faith and strong love for her family to stay alive during these nine months. She stated that her return to her family could not have been possible without the strong determination and courage she had. Smart’s memoir My Story highlights that in the toughest conditions, determination
A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard is an autobiography recounting the chilling memories that make up the author’s past. She abducted when she was eleven years old by a man named Phillip Garrido with the help of his wife Nancy. “I was kept in a backyard and not allowed to say my own name,” (Dugard ix). She began her life relatively normally. She had a wonderful loving mother, a beautiful baby sister,, and some really good friends at school. Her outlook on life was bright until June 10th, 1991, the day of her abduction. The story was published a little while after her liberation from the backyard nightmare. She attended multiple therapy sessions to help her cope before she had the courage to share her amazing story. For example she says, “My growth has not been an overnight phenomenon…it has slowly and surely come about,” (D 261). She finally began to put the pieces of her life back together and decided to go a leap further and reach out to other families in similar situations. She has founded the J A Y C Foundation or Just Ask Yourself to Care. One of her goals was, amazingly, to ensure that other families have the help that they need. Another motive for writing the book may have also been to become a concrete form of closure for Miss Dugard and her family. It shows her amazing recovery while also retelling of all of the hardships she had to endure and overcome. She also writes the memoir in a very powerful and curious way. She writes with very simple language and sentence structures. This becomes a constant reminder for the reader that she was a very young girl when she was taken. She was stripped of the knowledge many people take for granted. She writes for her last level of education. She also describes all of the even...
as Jennifer, a victim states, “I feel our childhood has been taken away from us and it has left a big hole in our lives.”
Immediately, a forensics team was called to aid in the investigation and soon the entire apartment was filled with police officers and detectives. Inside the apartment, however, they found nothing: there were no signs of forced entry, no signs of a struggle, and most importantly, no signs of Paulette. The girl's parents (specially her mother) did countless of interviews where they pleaded for their daughter’s safe return: **“She is an angel, she is a beautiful little girl; she never cries, never throws tantrums, she’s the sweetest”**, [Lizette was quoted saying] (https://youtu.be/5_UW_6YRaZI?t=315). In record time, Paulette’s picture was everywhere, with every single news outlet following the case closely: was Paulette kidnapped? Had she perhaps wondered out on her own? Could she be still alive?, an entire nation wondered and for the time Paulette was missing she was what everyone talked about. On the 27th of March, several news crews were allowed into the apartment as Lizette, sitting on her daughter’s bed, recalled what had happened that fateful night: she put her daughter to bed, kissed her goodnight and then she left the room. That night she didn’t hear any weird noises, the dogs didn’t bark and everything seemed fine. It would be nine days, on the 31st of March, until Paulette’s body was found:“The girl was found
Imagine having a child. How would you treat them? Would you treat them with love and care or be heartless and unconcerned about him or her? How would you react if you found out they went missing or something very unsettling happened to them? In Orange County, Florida on June 9, 2008, Casey Anthony’s daughter, Caylee Anthony, went missing, but Anthony never reported it. On December 11, remains of a human’s skeleton were discovered in the woods near Anthony’s house and eight days later it was announced to be Caylee Anthony’s body (CNN 1). The Casey Anthony trial showed us the power of judgment by her actions being abnormal for society, her constant lying and people being unable to believe that she was found not guilty.

Ms. Wells stated law enforcement was called, but no arrests were made and she was directed to law enforcement. The reporter stated after the first altercation was broke up by Mrs. Vanover’s sister, who’s also a member of law enforcement, the child tried to leave the home to call her. Per the reporter, Mr. Vanover followed the child and jumped on her again at the end of the road. The reporter stated a passer-byer had to break the fight
We are all affected by crime, whether we are a direct victim, a family member or a friend of a victim. It can interfere with your daily life, your personal sense of safety and your ability to trust others.
The chances of the family ever seeing their loved one again are very low. When the family tries to file a case over an enforced disappearance nothing can really be done. “Other families were threatened that if they did file a case, their loved ones would be harmed, or another member of their family would also be abducted” (Desk). A woman named Amina Masood Janjua, had lost her husband from an enforced disappearance. She has not seen her husband for almost seven years. Ever since she lost her husband, Amina started a campaign for people who go missing because people are too afraid to talk, so she took it upon herself (Marie). Just imagining a wife losing her husband without ever knowing what happened to him, shows that enforced disappearances can affect everyone who knows the
