On the morning of their fifth wedding anniversary, writing teacher Nick Dunne discovers that his wife, Amy, is missing. Amy's fame, due to her parents' popular "Amazing Amy" children's books, attracts significant media attention. Nick's seemingly indifferent attitude quickly raised suspicion among the press and the public. Flashbacks from Amy's diary show a marriage full of problems. The "Amazing Amy" stories highlighted Amy's own failures. The couple faced financial difficulties during the recession, which forced them to move from New York to Nick's hometown, North Carthage, Missouri, to care for his dying mother.
