Amazement and Wonder in Peter Weir’s Fearless
Roger Ebert writes, “Fearless is like a short story that shines a bright light, briefly, into a corner where you usually do not look. It makes you realize how routine life can become: how it is actually possible to be bored despite the fact that a universe has evolved for eons in order to provide us with the five senses by which we perceive it. If we ever really fully perceived the cosmic situation we are in, we would drop unconscious, I imagine, from shock.” What the filmmaker, Peter Wier, is attempting to make a statement about, is that we (1) cannot live our lives in boredom of life in general and its monotony because there are far to many wonderful things that go unnoticed, and (2) that

The earliest of examples to that end occurs when Max drives the car to see his friend in the beginning of the film. ON the way he stops out in the middle of nowhere and sits against his car on the side of the road, rubbing dirt between his fingers. This is a demonstration of Max's intrigue with something as ordinary as dirt on the side of the road, a gratitude and appreciation for the basics of what makes up all of life on earth. In addition, Max finds a new love for strawberries, partially newly discovered excitement in simplicity and partially as a test of his state of …show more content…
The film demonstrates the type of worrying that goes on in everyday life about nothings. The example of Jeff’s wife and the lawyer squabbling over the insurance money owed them from Jeff’s death in the crash is an instance of such an absolute triviality in the scope of things as far as Max is concerned. In all actuality, most things that are made a big deal of in everyday life, being late for class, an average grade on an assignment as opposed to the highest, whether to buy this shirt or that, are all empty inconsequentialities in the grand workings of the universe. In reconsideration, it can be seen that most of what is worrisome at present, will be entirely and completely forgotten in the future of five, ten, or twenty years. Thus, as the Dalai Lama was once heard saying, “Why worry? If you can change a thing, then do it and you need not worry. But if you cannot change a thing, then worrying is not going to make a
Max Powers trusted people he thought were his “best friends”, but not all friends are best friends, as Max would soon find out. Max was blinded by the fact that he recently received a will of $12.4 million, due to a skydiving accident that resulted in his parent 's death. He didn’t even realize that his previous “best friends” (Dez Tenney,Chloe Goode,Beverly Hills, Ray Leetuff) were plotting to kill him and become millionaires themselves. Max hosted a housewarming party, at his new place in a very expensive neighborhood due to the fact that he recently received $12.4 million. Max invited Dez, Chloe, Beverly, and Ray because he considered these people to be his best friends, but what he didn 't know was his so called ¨best friends¨ only accepted
Long distance weapons were essential to European combat. The main long distance weapons used by Europeans during that time were the longbow and the crossbow. Each form of weaponry had its unique advantages and their pejorative. The long bow (shown in figure 1) was the original form of distance weapons. The term ‘bow’ means to be made from wood, iron or steel. The Welsh, who inhabited England, were the first people to use longbows. Longbows were 6-7 feet long and had a range of 250 yards, and still had the ability to pierce a knight’s armor (Byam 12). A well trained archer could shot 10- 12 arrows in a single minute. Despite these pro’s the longbow had a lot of disadvantages as well. One draw back was only skilled archers, who were costly to train, could use a longbow. Another disadvantage was it didn’t have a ready loaded arrow (Edge 34). The crossbow (shown in figure 2) on the other had been emphatically different. The crossbow had a span of 2-3 feet and could kill a knight on horseback with one shot, because of good aim (Byam 30). Crossbows had ready loaded projectiles, while the longbow didn’t and the crossbow could be used by anyone since it didn’t require any skill. The crossbow did have a down side though, it had slow reloaded because of a crank and it was expensive. Crossbows were also used for other thi...

“The Trusty” is a work of fiction, written by Ron Rash, that tells the story of a man and a woman who try to escape their lives. In this short story, Sinkler is depicted as a scandalous but also as a distressed character. Many painted events lead to the illustration of a peculiar setting in which Sinkler is experiencing some abnormal instances. Sinkler is not dead, and his characterization has lead the audience to believe his flawed mental state is the reason why.
Fear is consuming. It can take over your mind and constantly prevent you from experiencing all life has to offer. Concurring your fear will take most, if not all the power away from it. “The Seventh Man” elucidates the effects of fear and how it keeps one from reaching their full potential. Whether you chose to fight or fly, the impact will be as great as you let it. In “The Seventh Man”, Murakami uses similes, foreshadowing and symbolism to develop the theme that it is better to face one's fears then to turn one's back on them.
Into the Wild, a novel written by Jon Krakauer, as well as a film directed by Sean Penn, talks about Chris McCandless, a young individual who set out on a journey throughout the Western United States, isolating himself from society, and more importantly, his family. During his travels, he meets a lot of different people, that in a way, change his ways about how he sees the world. There are many characteristics to describe McCandless, such as “naïve”, “adventurous”, and “independent”. In the book, Krakauer described McCandless as “intelligent”, using parts in his book that show McCandless being “intelligent”. While Krakauer thinks of McCandless as being “intelligent”, Penn thinks of McCandless as a more “saintly” type of person.
The implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act applied a market approach to school reform as a way of improving the school system. This new law promised an era of high standards, testing, and accountability in
It is evident that Max tries to escape his reality and get lost in a world where he can find freedom from his complex troubles, much like every other child in the world today whom does not know how to deal with such chaotic and complicated thoughts. Max, unknowingly comes face to face with all his emotions through the lives of others, helping him to come to an understanding in his escape. In the film “Where the Wild Things Are” Max’s sister ignores him, he feels his mothers new boyfriend is taking her from him and he is overall portrayed as a lonely, lost character. Max is told by his mother that he has gone out of control, which essentially is the last straw in initiating him to run away to where he eventually ends up where the wild things are. According to the article “Fantasy - Necessary for Sanity and Morality” in order for proper development, “A child needs to understand what is going on within his conscious self so that he can cope with that which goes on within his unconscious.” This can be attained by daydreaming through stories and scenarios to ...
In conclusion, the article is trying to tell us to live in the moment and allow ourselves to get bored. So, that we can truly connect with the people and things around
“The Cranes” by Peter Meinke appears to be a simple love story about an old couple reminiscing about their life, but with a closer look the story reveals a darker component of love. The story follows an old couple’s stop at the Gulf to watch some birds. While they are watching the birds they spot two whooping cranes. Throughout their conversation and observation of the birds Meinke reveals details that the couples and the cranes share in common. Thus, the pair of whooping cranes viewed by the couple in story symbolizes both their rarity, eternal love, and their last moments together.
Anatole France said, “An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don’t.” Through the No Child Left Behind program students are being tested in a manner that does not accurately measure learning. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB or The Act) Act was proposed in 2001, an addition to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, to assist students who have a disadvantage or are a minority. Through this Act students were required to take standardized tests. One main reason of implementing the standardized testing as a part of NCLB was to raise schools AYP, adequate yearly progress; this measures a schools progress in reaching certain standards set by the Federal Government. The Federal Government should eradicate the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 because it is creating substantial problems, limiting learning, and has proven to be ineffective.
In order to determine whether or not the No Child Left Behind Act is doing its job successfully and efficiently, one must first understand exactly what is involved in the act. This act is the most recent renewal of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. Similar to laws in the past, this particular act has been revised and added to numerous times to make sure it encompasses everything necessary for the education system and the students. The No Child Left B...
... itself uniquely for each person in each situation, it is clear that the human spirit has an insatiable desire to survive in any and all conditions. Each person has the fundamental intent of ultimate survival. When that survival is tested, it is the human spirit that allows people to fight in all conditions. While the spirit is not always successful in garnering that survival, it always tries in some way. It is not always easy to know how one will react when put in a life-threatening situation. But in a period like this, where people everywhere were experience a threat on their lives in some way, it is possible to truly examine the depth at which the inclination to live is embedded. Though it manifests itself uniquely for each person in each situation, it is clear that the human spirit has an insatiable desire to survive in any and all conditions.
In today’s world adversity is a part of everyday life. It can come in small doses or be dropped like a ton a bricks on an unsuspecting victim. In the face of all this adversity it is important to stay strong and set goals. The goals help to measure achievement and once someone had overcome their adversity and come out on the other side even stronger they have truly triumphed. To triumph over an adverse situation is to achieve such a large amount of success that it goes beyond original goals or expectations. In John Lee Hancock’s The Blind Side and Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity triumph over adversity is a common theme. Certain aspects of their movies, including camera shots, dialogue, and symbolism are used to demonstrate situations where not only is success found in adverse situations, but triumphed over. Hancock and Cuaron both show how attempts to triumph over adversity can be manipulated by social contest and how the resulting triumph can alter personalities and situations.
