to Hawaii with no job. Having no job is a huge challenge because, with no income, it will be difficult to buy all the necessary essentials. But the biggest challenge of all was to adjust to the new country and its customs.
To prove, Amar states that " A major difficulty I had to overcome was to adjust to the new way of life. I had to learn to live the American way. " Emigrating to a new country can be a huge challenge and can take many years to settle in, but since Amar is a strong person who can cope with any situation, he is able to adjust to the new way of life. After years many passed by, more of his family members are starting to move to the U.S with him and create a new life for themselves. Additionally, Amar explains that "This experience made me self-confident and made me know that if you put your mind to something, you can't give up." This shows that Amar is able to persevere through any obstacle that is thrown his way.
Anh Do’s story tells us a lot about the importance of sacrifice and persistence. Anh. Sacrifice and persistence are important for success and happiness, as it was for Anh. Anh
Amir is, to be put bluntly, a coward. He is led by his unstable emotions towards what he thinks will plug his emotional holes and steps over his friends and family in the process. When he sought after Baba’s invisible love, Amir allowed Hassan to be raped in an alleyway just so that the blue kite, his trophy that would win his father’s heart, could be left untouched. In the end, he felt empty and unfulfilled with the weight of his conscience on his shoulders comparable to Atlas’ burden. Unable to get over his fruitless betrayal, he lashes out and throws pomegranates at Hassan before stuffing money and a watch under his loyal friend’s pathetic excuse for a bed, framing Hassan for theft and directly causing the departure of both servants from his household. Even after moving to America, finding a loving wife, and creating a career for himself in writing, he still feels hollow when thinking of his childhood in Afghanistan. Many years later, he is alerted of Hassan’s death and sets out on a frenzied chase to find his friend’s orphaned son. He feels that he can somehow ease his regrets from all of those years ago if he takes in Hassan’s son, Sohrab. He finds Sohrab as a child sex slave for Assef, who coincidentally was the one to rape Hassan all of those years ago. After nearly dying in his attempt to take back Sohrab, he learns that he can take the damaged child back to the states with him. Sadly, Hassan’s son is so
In the book “A Long Walk To Water” there is a kid named Salva and he and his family live in Sudan where currently there is a war between South Sudan and Sudan because of their government. The family role plays in “A long Walk to Water” are similar to my life because Salva needs to go to school and needs to help in his house like me. Salva also had to complete his journey by going through the desert with his uncle and crossing the Nile river, Salva couldn’t do it without his family because he was really close to his family like I am.
In comparison to Enrique’s journey my college career is also about going from one place to the other. True grit and dedication as showed by enrique, is what i must keep in my head at all times while on my college journey. As a freshman in college i am fresh meat trying to survive the classes, hard work, and homework given in college. Like Enrique going on this journey, i am stepping into the unknown and making a sacrifice for my future and my family. Right now i may not know what i want to be but i know one thing, and that is to graduate and become successful. Along the way i will fall and be stress but that is all part of my journey. Sonia Nazario gives us this image in Enrique’s Journey: “They are out of money. They have passed through cold, heat, hunger. They slump in their seats, weak (page 60).”These obstacles was something Enrique overcame while on his way to the US. This mournful passage by Sonia Nazario shows how determined enrique was to reach the US. This is determination and perseverance is something i will incorporate in my four years in
...e relives the adventures that he shared with Hassan. All three experiences with the pomegranate tree, are unique, because they highlight important, and different parts of their relationship with one another. The relationships that were built, and torn apart at the pomegranate tree made it evident that after years of guilt and regret for Amir, he was proud of the relationship he had with Hassan, and is hopeful for the wellbeing of the relationship with Hassan’s son, Sohrab.
Amir’s development from being “a boy who won’t stand up for himself,” to a man that stands up for the morally responsible thing to do (22, Hosseini). When Amir was a child, he tried to escape from his sins in the past by hiding them with lies. However, this only made it worse for Amir, causing him to be an insomniac for much of his life and putting himself through constant torment. Only when Amir became a man, like Baba wanted him to be, was Amir able to face the truth of what he done and put himself on the path of redemption. Even when Amir was suffering a violent beating from Assef, Amir was able to laugh because he knew he was doing what he should have for Hassan years ago. Amir’s development from a child, who lies in order to cower from their own mistakes, into a man, someone who is not only able to admit his sins, but atone for them, is essential to communicating the theme of redemption being the only way to settle with your
After reading The Book of the Unknown Americans, I realized how difficult immigrating to the United States can be. I am an immigrant also, so just reading the story makes me relate to many problems immigrants experience relocating to a different country. Immigrants often face many issues and difficulties, but for some it is all worth it, but for others there comes a point in time where they have to go back to their hometown. Alma and Arturo Rivera came to the United States to better their life, but also so that Maribel could attend a special education school. While Arturo had a job things had gone well for the family, but once Arturo lost the job and passed away the two of them had to go back because they felt that that was the best option for them. Reading this book made me realize how strong an individual has to be to leave their own country and relocate somewhere else not knowing if this will better your life or cause one to suffer.
There are many challenges that one must face as we go through life. I have faced a few myself, however, none proved more challenging than moving from my country; Jamaica, to the United States and subsequently moving to the state of Wisconsin. Deciding to leave behind family and friends is the hardest decision to make, however, there are a few things that I was not prepared for that made the transition more challenging than expected. Moving away from all that is familiar culturally, socially and economically can be even more of a daunting task than imagined. There are things that are taught to us by our parents and others that are more dictated by our environment than anything else, so when I immigrated to the United States I had three major challenges to overcome.
Salva strives toward survival by surmounting the treacherous conflicts that challenge his strenuous journey toward safety. As Salva crosses the Akobo Desert, “[he] thinks about his family and his village,” which he uses as motivation to keep “his
Even when Amir was nasty and cruel to him, he had always been a faithful, kind soul. He never doubted that Amir was his friend and that he held a special place in his heart. When Hassan got raped, Amir did not help Hassan. There were ultimately two options: step up to the bullies and rescue Hassan, or run away. Even after hearing Assef say how Amir would never do the same for him, about how he would never stand up for him, he still chose to run away and pretend like he did not just witnessed what had happend. There is also scene where Amir is feeling guilty and both the boys are around a pomegranate tree. Amir just starts pelting Hassan with pomegranates and threatens to him to throw one back. He exclaims, “You’re a coward,” (...). And what does Hassan do? He picks up a pomegranate, but instead of hurling it in Amir’s direction, he smashes it on himself and says, “are you satisfied?” (....). There is this constant pressure on Hassan and Amir’s relationship. The Afghan society would not approve of such “friendship.” Both of the boys were good, but Amir was so young when he made the mistakes that it made the reader question whether there was a way for Amir to be morally good again.

I would like to think that the most influential factor in his journey was faith. During his season of despair and failure, Dr. Moore stepped away from God. I do not think that failure was a punishment for lack of devotion or quite time. I think that when Dr. Moore decided to put more emphasis and attention on to his studies rather than keeping a balance with his attention to God, he lost his source of life. On page 41, Dr. Moore addresses a desperate prayer and supplication: “Dear God, please make me an engineer!” It was at this moment that he first realized that he couldn’t do it alone. In Matthew 11:29-30, it says that God will give us rest and Dr. Moore really needed it. In Philippians 4:6-7, it says “Do not be anxious about anything, but
..., Baba told him that a boy that doesn’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up for anything. As a boy, Amir fails to stand up for himself. But, Amir redeems himself as an adult by showing he has the courage to stand up for what is right. Amir travels back to Kabul so that he can right the wrongs of his childhood. In Kabul, Amir stands up to Assef and rescues Hassan’s son, Sohrab.
Savitri much in vain of mortal human being replies in anguish to the “Mighty Voice”, - “My strength is taken away from me given to Death” (29). She replies that why should “I struggle with Fate” (31), why should “or hope in vain to” (32) uplift this ignorant race, that is satisfied with its lot and mocks at the saving light? Is there a God who can be moved by any cry? He leaves man to the mercy of law and Death? Why should I and Satyavan fight Death? Why not we pass through the night to the sun beyond? Thus Savitri’s answer to the voice, gives the exact description of Savitri’s state of mind. Her physical mind is working, but the intuition or the intuitive mind lay silent. The voice again replies to Savitri’s question, “Is this enough, O Spirit
