According to Nevid (2015), Alzheimer’s is “an irreversible brain disease with a gradual onset that leads to a slow but progressive deterioration of mental functioning involving profound memory loss and impaired judgement and reasoning ability” (p. 362). A significant number of American’s suffer from this demoralizing disease and the number is expected to “more than double to 13.8 million people by the year 2050” (Nevid, p. 363). This disease rips apart the lives of not only the patient but also family, friends, and often caregivers. If you have never had to witness first-hand how brutal Alzheimer’s is, count your blessings. I’ve watched two men that I respected and loved succumb to this disease and I hope to never have that experience again. …show more content…
The goal is not to overwhelm him with too many choices. Rick can choose up to five separate calendars that group activities together, such as doctor appointments, church group meetings, medications, or social outings. The calendars can be named to help Rick the most. And there is always the option to have all information on one calendar. Reminders can also be set to remind Rick that he needs to check his calendar. Daily routines: Make a list reminding Rick of his routine from the moment he wakes up; activities like brushing his hair and his teeth and other personal hygiene activities. This includes an option to help Rick dress himself for as long as he is able. The wardrobe of anyone suffering Alzheimer’s should be simple and basic. Take pictures of his clothes and match them together. For example: if Rick wears these (picture of dark slacks) he needs to wear this (picture of matching shirt). These routine reminders can help Rick feel …show more content…
There are ten to choose from. Games like solitaire, word searches, and matching games. Exercise: It is very important that Rick move his body. With Ricks help, set up a series of simple exercises. Personal contact information: Whether Rick, his caregiver, or a stranger needs contact or medicinal information because Rick has lost his way; this option is where you store that information. This icon is at the top of every page and contains all information needed in an emergency, such as phone numbers and the medications he uses (which would be vital if Rick was injured and needed treatment). This app is not for everyone. As mentioned before, if Rick is in denial he won’t want to bother with this, and there will come a time when this will not help him no matter how much it helped in the past. That is just the nature of this beast called Alzheimer’s. But if Rick accepts what is happening, this app could help him feel more independent and less like a burden at least for a while. Since this disease will eventually strip Rick of everything he knows, shouldn’t we give him a chance to retain his dignity for as long as
The Extra, written by Michael Christie is a short story in which allows the readers to explore the significant ideas within the text such as being dependent on others. Throughout the story it is shown that the narrator is completely dependent on Rick. The narrator can rarely do anything for himself and needs to have Rick help him in many aspects in his life. It says in the story that that the narrator himself could not read and that he needed to wait until Rick got home so that he can read both letters that the narrator had gotten from the government. The narrator is not even able to cook for himself and must wait on Rick to return so that he wouldn’t starve. He wasn’t able to go look through dumpsters for extra thrown out food for him because
...ater in the book Rick is no longer jealous of Todd and he isn’t afraid to confront him at the party. As quoted on page 143 “Don’t push me, I warned. If it comes down to you or Jake, I choose Jake. I’ll rat you out!” This doesn’t end well with how Nelson strangled Jake, considering Didi had to hit him over the head with a champagne bottle to save Jakes life. Nelson had to go to the hospital and it turns out that Jake takes the blame for Didi when the cops arrive, so in the end the jealousy wasn’t worth it.

Rick is not a perfect man but a man of integrity, reliability, and sympathy. First of all, he is kind to his employees. Emil, a banker in a gambling game, lets a man win 20,000 francs and asks Rick for some money. Rick is not unhappy and said “mistake like that happen all the time”. Moreover, he helps a young lady get
During the film of Casablanca there was many occasions where each character had a connection with the other. The entire film seemed to be about a man who is going through multiple complications of reality consequences without informing and information towards his loved one. As you can see in the movie Rick is trying to solve and corporate with as many unideal situations for the sake of keeping his partner llsa safe and unaware from the events at all times. The Films shows motivation between him trying to do whats best for him and Llsa who is the partner of rick shows a high trait of curiosity and awareness. Rick is also a character who moves in and out of hard shadows, often within a frame by himself. At this time, he is concealing his broken
The next line that shows the evolution of Rick’s character is when he is meeting with Ugarte. Ugarte tells Rick that he has killed two men for letters of transit. This scene is clearing showing Ugarte trying to impress Rick. Ugarte states, “Are you impressed now Rick?” This is a common theme of the movie, as everyone is trying to impress Rick. After Ugarte gets arrested for stealing the letters, and is screaming back at Rick, Rick states, “I stick my neck out for nobody.” This showing he doesn’t care or have compassion for others, and only cares about
... try to secure the downtown area, they were quickly overrun by the zombie horde. After hiding in a burned-out tank, Rick is eventually recused by a group of survivors who have been making risky supply runs into the city. When he returns to the group’s camp outside the city limits, he discovers that his wife, son, and best friend are also part of this rag-tag band. After the tearful reunion, the question of what to do next drives the subsequent episodes.
Rick is one of the main characters shown in the Walking Dead. Rick is an individual who typically calm, smart, and a good friend. He will often stubbornly cling to his personal strong moral code, which has resulted in numerous bad calls and extra stress within the group. Rick 's greatest fault, perhaps, is his uncanny ability to place responsibility on himself and set for himself goals that are impossible to reach. This has, on various occasions, put Rick at ends with both Lori and Shane, and often weighs heavily on his mind. Despite his faults, his combat skill and general care for all members of the group have led him to be looked up to, and allowed him to take the leadership role within the group. Rick is strongly
When Rick is forced with the decision of what to do with the letters of transit Rick speaks with Ilsa and Ilsa asks Rick to think for both of them and make the decision. In the end, Rick sacrifices himself for the happiness of Ilsa and Victor as well as the war against Germany. He risks his own life for others even though he is quoted as saying, “I stick my neck out for nobody” and, “I’m the only cause I’m interested in.” This is an endearing quality. Women want to be Ilsa, and dream of loving a man like Rick.
Throughout six seasons of AMC’s ongoing hit show The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes, the main protagonist, has grown from: a tough guy police officer with a soft heart for helping others (almost always coming with a great personal risk) to the ultimate leader and survivor. Rick’s character arc during the first five seasons of the show, were about the ongoing growth/development of Rick, along with little benchmarks along the way in the form of gruesome but necessary murder. During Rick’s character arc, he goes through three major phases that reflect his morals and view of the world. These changes are then highlighted by the various brutal gory kills Rick has achieved. We as viewers get an in depth look at this gradual evolution as he fights to survive
One message the show sends to its viewer’s is survival; one must do anything they can to survive but while trying to survive one can also offer help to others who are trying to do the same. In several scenes Rick and the group are seen hunting animals, and entering abandoned houses to find supplies-- medicine, food and guns. The actions the characters take by entering abandoned homes and hunting animals indicate that since there are nearly no stores close by to grab food or medicine, they must now hunt and find their own medicine . Another example of how this show sends a message of survival is when Rick, Michonne, black young women carrying a katana, and Carl, Rick's son, set out to find food for Judith, R...

That evening at Rick's, a young Bulgarian woman approaches Rick to ask if Rick’s friend captain Louis is "trustworthy." Rick knows that Louis has a habit of offering refugees the papers they need to escape in exchange for “other favors”. Rick then proceeds to defend Louis’ integrity, but not wanting to let Mrs. Brandel's new marriage be hurt, he arranges for her husband to win at roulette table so they can buy the papers. He does this because he knows what is like to feel betrayed in love because of his circumstances. Later, Laszlo asks to speak to Rick. Laszlo tries to purchase the secret papers, but Rick refuses. When Laszlo asks why, Rick replies, "Ask your wife.” This shows Rick’s slight remorse for and sentiment towards Ilsa.
The Walking Dead is a TV series shown on Sunday nights on the AMC channel. This series is about the way people survive in an apocalyptic world where everyone who dies, comes back to life, not as a person, but as a “walker”. The story begins with Rick Grimes, a sheriff in a small town whom wakes up in a hospital after the apocalypse. Rick’s mission, after the apocalypse, was to find his wife, Lori, and son, Carl, and to keep them safe from harm. Rick and other characters in the story, go through an intense amount of emotions, physical and psychological battles, and as the AMC website put it “in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them: After all they’ve seen, all they’ve done, all they’ve sacrificed,
In order to fulfill his job expectations, Rick retires, or kills androids that have escaped to Earth from Mars. He begins as a cold, selfish hunter who has no regard for android life. His work as a bounty hunter figuratively transforms him into an android, furthering the hypocrisy when he targets androids, incapable of empathy, yet for him to successfully carry out his work he must not have empathy towards his targets. He progressively evolves to an empathetic character who develops empathy towards all forms of life, whether mortal or immortal. Mass extinction and the push to a society that is more empathetic, has motivated a religion based upon technology called Mercerism. The creators of the religion are very selective, making every member in it seem like they are part of a higher society above the rest of the
