In the town of Perdido Beach everyone over the age of fifteen suddenly vanishes, dropping everything that they were doing. A girl named Mary and her brother are struggling to take care of the babies, and toddlers that are in the daycare. Mary tries to find Sam for help but when she learns that he had left she enlists the help of Howard and his bully friend Orc to get supplies. Sam and his friends soon discover a barrier cutting off the town form the outside world. The area inside of the barrier is nicknamed Fallout Alley Youth Zone or FAYZ. The barrier is opaque but they can still everything that is outside of the barrier. If the barrier is touched there would be quite a bit of pain. While Sam, Astrid and Quinn head back they run into a boy, Edilio. He was trying to dig a hole under the barrier, but to no avail. Astrid asks him to help them to find her brother. She wants to go over to the nuclear plant where her father works. Sam and his friends go to explore the power plant, and find Astrid’s four year old autistic brother Pete. There was also a map marking radiation patterns from a meteor that happened fifteen years ago. They decide to spend the night in the control room. The next morning Sam wakes up, he accidently knocks over a trophy case startling Pete. As Pete screams Sam starts to choke, the others are too focused on Pete to notice what was happening to Sam. Sam lifts his hand out and a green light comes out making Sam fall unconscious and Pete quite. Once everything had calmed down, Sam confesses that this was not the first time it happened.
