Allergic to “Everything, Everything!”
The author introduces the main character Madeline (or Maddy) by explaining her rare disease. Maddy is a teenage girl who can’t remember the last time she was outside. She was stuck inside while the others kids played or went to each others houses. There is one extreme reason why she isn’t able to take part in any of these things every kid has a blast doing. Maddy is allergic to anything and everything. She is only safe in her own house where her body is used to everything. She can’t safely interact with anyone outside of her household. She thinks about how her body doesn’t recognize him and how he could make her get sick or even die. “I think of Olly, decontamination-cold and waiting for me. He’s the opposite of all these things. He’s not safe. He’s not familiar. He's in constant motion. He's the biggest risk I've ever taken”(Yoon 69). This shows how Madeline wants to think of Olly as someone she knows, someone she can be around and healthy to her. He isn't anywhere close to that to her. He is extremely dangerous to her. This is important because if Madeleine was sane she would’ve listened to her mom and stayed away from him. She knows this isn’t good due to the fact that she’s in Hawaii with no family and nothing to help her. When Maddy feels really off it's showed by saying, “I try to cry out but my throat is raw, as if I’d been screaming for days and days. I'm sick. I'm more than sick. I'm dying”(Yoon 254). This shows the importance of how Maddy left behind her family and everything to go out in the world and see everything at least once in her lifetime. Even though it might have lead to health issues she still ended doing what she wanted. She got to get out of her house and spend time with Olly. The author included this because something like this can’t end perfectly. She knew there would be a consequence with her health if she left the house. But she didn't care, she left anyways so she could live her life and go out and have fun at least once in her
