About the Author:
Erich Maria Remarque was a German born author. Born in 1898, Remarque was one of the many young men conscripted into the German Army in World War I. During his service he would be injured by shrapnel, sending him to recover at an army hospital for the remainder of the war. Following the war, he would work in many different careers such as a stonecutter, teacher, editor, journalist and librarian before he pursued his love for writing full time. As an author, he would write and published several successful books but one novel stands above them all. Following the experiences of a German soldier during World War 1, his novel All Quiet on the Western Front would be published in 1929.
Plot Outline:
All Quiet on the Western Front follows the narration of a young German soldier named Paul Bäumer. It would follow his experiences and memories from civilian life to the realities of the frontline during World War I. Enlisting in the army …show more content…

War was once said to be for glory and honour but shown are only the meaningless for the men who fight them, as several thousand die to gain the distance of a football field. These men have to endure with the deaths of many without fault in their morale as "The terror of the front sinks deep down when we turn our back upon it; we make grim, coarse jets about it, when a man dies, then we say he has nipped off his turd, and we speak of everything that keeps ups from going mad; as long as we take it that way we maintain our resistance. But we do not forget... We don't act like that because we are in good humour: we are in a good humour because otherwise we should go to pieces." Soldiers like Paul and friends have to disconnect themselves from their own feelings in order to survive as avoiding it helps expels the feeling of fear and despair that could drive them
