What is there to be said about a mothers love? Some say that it is a bond that can never be severed or that a mother’s love is unconditional. The mother, Kate, in “All My Sons” still intensely believes that her son Larry is still alive. Throughout the play we learn many things about Kate. We know that she is superstitious because of the way she looks at dreams and horoscopes, intelligent from the way she knows what’s going on and that Joe always asks her what to do, and manipulating in a way towards people who bring up Larry’s death or a sensitive subject comes up. Also Kate could be called naive for knowing the truth for so long but not accepting it.
Within the first few minutes of the play we hear that Frank Lubey is writing a horoscope for Larry that Kate asked him to make. Kate wants to know if November 25, the day of Larry’s disappearance, was his favorable day or not. After 3 years Kate is turning to the stars for an answer about Larry’s vanishing. Most people just read their horoscopes for entertainment instead of judging if someone is dead or not. Later on page 17 lines 4-10 of “All My Sons” Kate says:
“…everything decides to happen at the same time. This month is his birthday; his tree blows down, Annie comes. Everything that happened seems to be coming back. I was just down in the cellar and what do I stumble over? His baseball glove. I haven’t seen it in a century.”
To Kate these are signs but as we find out later we know that these signs might mean the opposite of what she thinks they mean. In my opinion of how she interprets these signs is that this month is his birthday and his memorial tree blows over symbolizing that they don’t need it anymore because he is alive. Kate has done many things throughout this play, that when reading it, I thought she was a little crazy. Only in the fact that she has kept Larry’s room the same with all the shirts clean and shoes polished. But then again we have to put ourselves in her shoes and say “how long would I wait for my missing son to return home?” Personally, the fact that Kate was not ready to move on after getting the news about Larry’s disappearance, that she created this idea inside herself that there could still be a chance for Larry to come home. This is a connection between a mother and child that keeps her believing, connections that even a death cannot break. That is a mother’s unconditional love.

I think Kate's final speech can be interpreted in endless amounts of ways but it comes down to how someone's individual view of the play is. Personally I felt Kate's speech was very ironic and a coincidence since through out the play she's very mean to Pertuchio and her view on the whole marriage was pretty negative. Pretty much how I saw this play in a modern aspect is Kate was the girl with the bad attitude and Petruchio was the douche-bag who likes girls who are a challenge i.e. Kate and in some weird way Kate ended up seeing that her attitude isn't what someone like her or a women that is married should be presenting. Most fairytales and fables tell people that truth is essential in life. However, truth can ruin one’s life and lead to a fall of communities. In Arthur Miller’s play All My Sons, theKeller family is ruined by the truth that they buried a long time ago. Keller’s dark truth about the faulty parts and 21 pilots’ death haunts the family and leads to a tragic ending. Truth is important, but it can be lethal because truth causes Chris to nearly lose Ann, destroys relationship between Chris and Joe, and it eventually leads to Joe’s suicide.
For instance, the author writes, “If I were to marry, I would not grow old with my husband. I could either die two years or outlive him by a hundred. An interesting prospect. What price did Claire pay to keep her only child?” (Pearson 180). This explains how when the time comes to marry or to have children, she would outlive her family. Here, the author is referencing that Jenna feels that Claire went too far to keep her alive. In addition, Mary Pearson writes, “But I know one day, when Kayla is of certain of age, I will travel to Boston in the winter and I will stay there, taking long walks and feeling the softness of the cold snowflakes on my face once again, because no parent should outlive their child,” (Pearson 264). This indicates how Jenna will have to return to Boston, where it is cold, to weaken and eventually die. She wants to do this when Kayla is older because she doesn't want to outlast her daughter. Every time the family comes to a confrontation someone retreats to the past and reflects on life as it was back then, not dealing with life as it is for them today. Tom, assuming the macho role of the man of the house, babies and shelters Laura from the outside world. His mother reminds him that he is to feel a responsibility for his sister. He carries this burden throughout the play. His mother knows if it were not for his sisters needs he would have been long gone. Laura must pickup on some of this, she is so sensitive she must sense Toms feeling of being trapped. Tom dreams of going away to learn of the world, Laura is aware of this and she is frightened of what may become of them if he were to leave.
Despite her physical absence, however, Lucy's mother continually occupies Lucy's thoughts, inspiring feelings of anger, contempt, longing, and regret.

Kate thinks that Annie is a little bit too rough with her and tells her, “Miss Annie, you don’t know the child well enough yet.” But just as usual Annie knows what Helen needs when others don’t because she has a personal experience with it. If she did pity Helen; Helen would not have learned anything, and that wasn’t the point of Annie coming. A mother is like glue. She is the glue that holds the families together, because she provides love, care, and support to her family. It is the simple things a mother does that are important. Who used to hear you before you can talk? Who used to hold you before you could walk? And who wiped your tears when you cried? However, a mother could also be foolish and small-minded. In Pride And Prejudice, Mrs. Bennet is a great example of a foolish mother and how a mother could represent her daughters in foolish way.
