From history to today, African Americans have been discriminated due to their skin color. Although African Americans are still being judged today, many movements from the past have been active to stop the racial tensions. A person that showed and introduced racism toward plays is Alice Childress. Childress is an African American (Black) woman who is an actress, novelist, and playwright. Childress was the first Black woman that directed an off Broadway play that touches upon the themes of feminist, romance, biographical, socio-politic, and history. Three main ideas that Childress had shown in her plays are racial relations, the need for people to compromise in order to survive, and she acknowledges people that lives on the margin of society. …show more content…
When Childress was a young girl, she was raised by her grandmother in Harlem, New York, United States because her parents divorced. Childress’ grandmother encouraged Childress to imagine and think about what passersby do. Sadly, Childress’ grandma passed away while she was in high school. Childress had to drop out to support herself so she found many jobs. Childress was employed at serveral jobs which enlists her in the working class. Employment positions she has worked are being a salesperson, assistant machinist, insurance agent, and domestic worker. Working with her co-workers, she was inspired to write her plays with strong characters attitudes (such as having protagonists with a strong mind of their own) and have a strong plot. Florence was Childress’ place that showed her skills in writing. The play was written overnight because she was betting with a friend. Childress’ friend said no one can write a play that can be acted overnight and Childress decided to prove her friend wrong. Doubtlessly, Childress wrote Florence with strong character personality, dialogue, and conflict. The conflict was African Americans need to reject the stereotype roles people labeled them. Furthermore, Childress illustrated Black parents need to encourage their children to succeed. Later in 1952, Childress produced her play, Gold Through the Trees. Childress was the first Black woman to have her play produced in New York City. Three years after publishing Gold Through the Trees, Childress wrote a new play named Trouble in Mind. The play won an Obie Award and was admitted to Broadway, but did not make it. hirley St. Hill was born in New York City on November 30, 1924 she was the oldest of four daughters. Her parents were Charles and Ruby St.Hill. In 1927 at age 3 Shirley was sent to live on her grandmother’s farm in Barbados. She attended British grammar school and picked up the Caribbean accent that marked her speech. Shirley moved back to New York in 1934 at the age of 11 and went on to graduate in 1946 from Brooklyn College with honors later earning a masters degree from Columbia University. During this time it was difficult for black college graduates to find jobs. After being rejected by many companies, she obtained a job at the Mt.Calvary childcare center in Harlem.

Cooper's eclect ic and influential career mirrored the times. Although her life was privileged in relation to those of the majority of African-Americans, Cooper shared in the experiences of wrenching change, elevating promise, and heart-breaking disappointment. She was accordingly able to be an organic and committed intellectual whose eloquent speech was ensnarled in her concern for the future of African-Americans.
Anna Julia Cooper’s, Womanhood a Vital Element in the Regeneration and Progress, an excerpt from A Voice from the South, discusses the state of race and gender in America with an emphasis on African American women of the south. Both are political, controversial, and talented experiencing negative and positive reviews in their own communities. Many African American men and women have been characterized as a group of significant individuals who help to exemplify the importance of the black community. They have illustrated their optimistic views and aspects in a various amount of ways contributing to the reconstruction of African Americans with desire and integrity. Though many allegations may have derived against a large amount of these individuals, Crystal Bird Fauset, Jacob Lawrence, and Mary Lucinda Dawson opportunistic actions conveys their demonstration to improve not only themselves but also their ancestors too. Throughout history and in present day, there has been a large neglect of Black Women in both studies of gender and studies of race. Combating both sexism and racism simultaneously is what separates Black Women and our history and battles from both white women and black males-combined with what is discussed as a triple jeopardy- race, sex and socioeconomic status provides black women with a completely different and unique life experience when compared to, really, the rest of the world. Beverly Guy-Sheftall discusses the lack of black feminist in our history texts stating,“like most students who attended public schools and colleges during the 1950s and 1960s, I learned very little about the involvement of African American women in struggles for emancipation of blacks and women.” (Words of Fire, 23) I, too, can agree that throughout my education and without a Black Women’s Studies course at the University of Maryland I would have never been exposed to the many founding foremothers of black feminism. In this essay, I will discuss the activism, accomplishments and contributions of three of those founding foremothers-Maria Stewart, Anna Cooper, and Ida B. Wells.
African American women have come a long way. In the 1940s, women were treated as second-class citizens and Blacks faced discrimination everywhere they looked. They were not taught to be proud of being Black (Dressier, 1985). They had a hard time going to school. Black children were not taught Black history. African Americans were not able to have a sense of pride about themselves or their culture (Farley & Allen, 1987).

Her poems, essays, short stories, and novels portray her views on feminism and civil rights while giving a realist approach that has provoked readers for many years. Her horrific and brutally honest writing style made the world see a different view of minority women and allowed her to receive the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Color Purple (“Alice Walker”).
