According to Marx his theory of alienation is a result of the capitalist mode of production and the cruelty of money. In the world of capitalism, the realization of labour appears as a loss of reality for labour workers. The worker turns foreign to the world he lives in thus, alienation leading to social classes. Ideology as a false consciousness is connected to alienation because “the capitalist mode of production takes over the entirety of an individual, family, and social needs in sub-ordinary to them to the market and also reshapes them to serve the needs of capital” (Braverman, 1975). Marx’s theory of ideology as a false consciousness states that it puts an individual in a state of mind that counteracts them to see the prejudiced world they live in. Even though in a workplace there are more workers than superiors and the workers can create a revolt they do not do so because ideology as a false consciousness does not allow individuals that are working to realize how they are being exploited and because workers are blinded, it prevents them to take action to have a better work life. These kids work twelve-hour shifts from nine to nine sewing clothing on the floor. In one room there are no windows, one exit, and one washroom for about four hundred workers to use. Most of the workers are girls, they come from rural areas of Bangladesh where going to school is not necessary so, they help their families out by working in these sweatshops. For most of the children working here sewing clothes is all they know because they have barely had enough education to know anything else. In these sweatshops the factories might have electricity that plays hooky which means the fans will not work, so for a place like Bangladesh where the average temperature varies from twenty-five to thirty degrees Celsius, a fan is an essential part of their life especially in a room full of people with no windows. In these factories all the sewing and stitching is done while the workers are sitting on the floor there are no desks and chairs for the workers to do their work, they do the sewing and stitching on the floor for twelves with no back support, which can cause problems to these young children in the future. Since most of their work consists of twelve hours most kids do not go home after their work is done, they sleep at their workstation. Again these workers are only making about $32 for every twelve hours, which means just like the workers in China
I argue that the way Marx looks at alienation should open the worlds eyes to the negative effects that alienation has on people. Marx’s idea that, alienation is just another form of inequality because its to stand apart of or as stranger to something. And we see a lot of alienation and inequality in regards to the work place, race, class and life itself. Both of the words alienation and inequality are negative and a question that I believe is important to ask is , “ why does alienation occur so often?” Marx believes that “ working for money and not for the creativity of labor is akin to selling your soul” (lecture 4).
Marx, discusses a certain concept of alienated labor as an unavoidable result of a capitalist system. The framework that he tries to draw in the book is that capitalist system should be blamed for class strafication and alienated labor in the society. In a capitalist society, people suffer from class conflict and property ownership of bourgeoisie. Bourgeoisie owns the big factories and businesses, so then, small manufacturers have to shut down and basically have to join the labors in the big businesses. Workers in the capitalist system are obligated to work for long hours under unhealthy conditions for really low salaries.
What does alienation mean? "Alienation (or "estrangement" means, for Marx, that man does not experience himself as the acting agent in his grasp of the world, but that the world (nature, others and he himself) remain alien to him. They stand above and against him as objects, even though they may be objects of his own creation. Alienation is essentially experiencing the world and oneself passively, receptively, as the subject separated from the object." 1.(ch5, Marx's Concept of Man, by Erich Fromm) Alienation for what I understand it to be, is that I as a human being, (subject), I'm living my life with out being able to dictate what I want to do with it. The oppressors of my world are the ones dictating what I'm supposed to be doing with it. This creates my alienation from my world; making me live a life of oppression. You basically become a slave to your world.
With the emergence of an industrial working class that arrived from the farms and countryside new theories and ideologies about the political economy began to appear. Karl Marx, a political philosopher during this time, introduced the idea of "alienation of labor". His theory proposed that labor has the ability to create a loss of reality in the laborer because the laborer himself becomes a commodity or object due to the nature of work. In terms of the roles of women it can be argued that the effect is even greater due to the limited choices of work available. The first type of alienation is from “product of labor”. This is where the worker is separated from their work. This is basically saying that the work that the worker is creating does not necessarily show their creativity. Marx wrote:
The concept of alienation plays a significant role in Marx's early political writing, especially in the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1848, but it is rarely mentioned in his later works. This implies that while Marx found alienation useful in investigating certain basic aspects of the development of capitalist society, it is less useful in putting forward the predictions of the collapse of capitalism. The aim of this essay is to explain alienation, and show how it fits into the pattern of Marx's thought. It will be concluded that alienation is a useful tool in explaining the affect of capitalism on human existence. In Marx's thought, however, the usefulness of alienation it is limited to explanation. It does not help in either predicting the downfall of capitalism, or the creation of communism.
In closing, both Marx and Durkheim were extraordinary thinkers and theorist of their time. Both their theories have provided a better understanding of our society by examining our society and the crucial elements within it at a deeper level. Alienation then, is the breakdown of the interconnectedness in society imposed by the structure of society that is, to Marx an important part of life. Well, at least in an ideal sense. Anomie is defined as a state reached when society is marked by unchecked economic progress. Although Marx and Durkheim approached the issue of modern society in different analytic manner, there is one thing that is undisputed, it has greatly impacted sociology today and maintain a level of truth as well as value for the future.
Marx’s theory of alienation describes the separation of things that naturally belong together. For Marx, alienation is experienced in four forms. These include alienation from ones self, alienation from the work process, alienation from the product and alienation from other people. Workers are alienated from themselves because they are forced to sell their labor for a wage. Workers are alienated from the process because they don’t own the means of production. Workers are alienated from the product because the product of labor belongs to the capitalists. Workers do not own what they produce. Workers are alienated from other people because in a capitalist economy workers see each other as competition for jobs. Thus for Marx, labor is simply a means to an end.
Marx's Idea of Alienation in Productive Activity (1) Marx explained that alienation is about the loss of human powers in the society and alienation separates human from his natural word, activities and makes man lose control over his labor activity. Marx alienation from productive activity emerged when human are barred by alienation from realizing their potentials and creativities, this was achieved under capitalism by division of labor which finally led to specialization in a specified or a fixed area of labor activity or task. Marx explains that workers sell their labor to the employer or the capitalist for his satisfaction which in return pays the workers in wages for the labor which he fixed for the workers and not the choice of the worker, this alienates the worker from the natural social behavior and labor activity i.e. transformation of useful labor to abstract labor, the employer fixes your area of speciality, your job duties, and your wages and hours of work.

In this theory of alienation, being a worker comes first and being a person comes second. Alienation makes people spend their lives working on things they hardly care about while they make money for someone else as they sacrifice their own interests and goals. Capitalism turns workers into machines and alienates them from their full potential. Workers are not content as they are unable to determine their own paths as they are at the mercy of their employers. Alienation produces boredom, stress, unhappiness, misery and low productivity.
The self is our experience of a distinct, real, personal identity that is separate and different from all other people. Sociologists look at both the individual and society to gain a sense of where the self comes from. Most believe the self is created and modified through interaction over the course of a lifetime. Self becomes very important in today’s world because it gives us a sense of existence. According to Karl Marx, self is very important he states that due advent of capitalism we have lost our sense of self. He gives theory of Alienation, that describes the estrangement of people from aspects of their self being as a consequence of living in a society of stratified social classes. The alienation from the self is a consequence of being a mechanistic part of a social class,
