In Alice Walker’s “Roselily” the narrator explores the depths of Roselily’s emotions through point of view. The short story is written in 3rd person limited because we only get an insight on her thoughts during the wedding but not the literal aspects of the wedding. Roselily is faced with a dilemma and it shows through her train of the thoughts providing a relationship between Roselily and the readers. As she faces adversity throughout her whole life she understands money doesn’t always bring happiness. The short story is split up in fragments of the wedding happening. This short story is makes it easier for the readers to connect to their readers through Roselily’s emotions through the wedding. As the abundance of thoughts come to her while she’s getting wed, she thinks of her groom’s religion, her kids, family, new life, and now she doesn’t want to marry her groom. When she shares her intimate experiences about her ex husband- the narrator briefly explained, “Went to skin and bones. Suffered nightmares, retching and falling out of bed. When Roselily commented on her new marriage, “ A lifetime of black and white. Of veils. Covered head...” related to her thoughts about her whole life in general from it not having an in between but strictly one or the other. From the poverty to the oppression of her husband’s muslim religion. The readers can understand that Roselily feels trapped and feels like she has no other option otherwise.
