I am doing the response on the practicum speakers on (2/9/18) Alexandra Conley and Marissa Norrgard. They graduated from Bradley University in 2016. Today, I am going to talk about how each one spoke to me and what I got from their presentations. First, I’ll start with Alexandra Conley. She touched upon the two important things. Being a Generalist or being a Specialist. A specialist is someone who specializes in a certain field of study/work and they are the experts at what they do and are very skilled. A Generalist is someone who is skilled in a wide variety of things. Generalists aren’t restrained to just one specific field of practice like a specialist and can be skilled at more than just one thing and this makes them a valuable employee. …show more content…
For example, say a company has a team of generalists who know how to code, but aren’t suited for the task, In this type of situation the company will likely hire a person who specializes on coding in order to speed the project up rather than wait for the other people to figure whatever needs coded out. “Social media is good for marketing.” This is something Alexandra said during her presentation and to be frank she’s right. She goes on to say how social media is the perfect medium where people can share their work to get feedback as well as showing off their work. Social media is also useful for sharing your work with others with the same interests via social media. Her presentation helped me understand that I need to widen my skill set and get my work noticed if I want to be successful after college. Last but not least, I now move onto the second speaker and her name is Marissa Norrgard. One thing she talked about in her presentation that I found interesting as when she compared and contrasted an In-House vs. Agency

Hating Alison Ashley is an Australian novel, published in 1985, by children’s author Robin Klein. n the “Pat Conroy Letter” (October 24, 2007) to the Charleston Gazette, Pat Conroy implies that the only good in banning books is giving students irresistible temptation to read them. Conroy emphasizes the dangers of banning books by juxtaposing books to real life utilizing diction, imagery, and conjunctions. He uses sarcasm in order to persuade the school board to change their book banning policy. Conroy captures the audience’s attention with a historical allusion to the Hatfields and McCoys to relate to the people in Charleston, West Virginia using sarcasm and humor in hopes of convincing that censorship is wrong.
Widely respected throughout America, Anna Quindlen is a notable author and columnist who jump started her career as a part-time reporter for the New York Post at the age of 18. After earning her B.A. degree at Barnard College, New York City, Quindlen upgraded to positions as a general columnist, and later deputy metropolitan editor, for the New York Times. Her biweekly column, “About New York,” resulted in her becoming the third woman in all history of the Times to write a regular column for the exclusive and elite op-ed page. Quindlen then went on to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1992. From essays to children’s books to semi-autobiographical novels, Quindlen has been putting her thoughts down on paper for as long as she can remember -- a habit that has certainly paid off, as evidenced by her incredible success. This writer’s duty is to pass on the advice and
In her article “But What Do You Mean” Deborah Tannen, claims that there is a huge difference in the style of communicating between men and women. Tannen breaks these down into seven different categories; apologies, criticism, thank-yous, fighting, praise, complaints, and jokes. With each of these she compares men to women by explaining the common misconceptions that each of the genders do. The different style of communication can cause some problems at the workplace and even affect the environment. The different styles of communication has been around forever and almost becomes a “ritual”(299). Tannen is effective with mainly women and not men. She is primarily successful with women due to the fact that her tone targets women, also the organization
As the first African-American to create a multicultural, international concert dance company, Alvin Ailey’s dance company has been dubbed the “cultural ambassador of the world” (Gorman 36). Through his Alvin Ailey Dance Company, he addressed the racism and injustice faced by ethnic minorities across the globe. Ailey clearly revolutionized African American participation in 20th century concert dance as well as revived interest in modern dance. As an extremely talented dancer and choreographer, Ailey’s success is attributed to his dedication and passion for expression through dance, but what is often overlooked is his resilience to the hardships he faced, the mentors he had, and the opportunities
1b. STRUCTURAL FRAME - The painting of Margaret Olley, painted by William Dobell won the Archibald Prize in 1948. This painting is now at the art gallery of NSW. The main colours that have been used in the William Dobell painting are a pearly white colour for Margaret Olleys dress. William Dobell has also used a lot of gold and brown in the background which I think makes the painting look royal. William Dobell has painted the background in dark colours and then uses lighter colours on Margaret Olley to soften and also to accentuate the figure of Margaret. In the darker areas of the background he has used a green colour mixed in with a black colour to make a darker tone. William dobell has made the the background darker so that your eye catches
In a world where the society decides everything you do including how much you eat, Cassia decides to rebel against some of the rules in the book Matched by Ally Condie. The lesson to be learned is to follow your heart, because Cassia was faced with the choice between Ky and Xander, also Cassia has to choose what to do about the poem her grandfather gave her, furthermore Cassia must decide if she wants to take the red pill or not.
I have had the opportunity to work alongside a diverse and extensive number of doctors and nurse practitioners, among other health professionals, which has exposed me to different ways of practicing, different work ethics, skills, and abilities. I know what patients typically consider to be desirable and undesirable traits of health professionals.
After all of the madness and drama, that was happening day, after day, everyone was not in the right place. Numerous amounts of people did not know how to feel about Palmer or just everyone around them. For Anna, things were different. Her life is just a swirl of pastels on the floor. However, throughout the problems Anna goes through,we can somewhat see glimpses of the importance of art to her. “There is a reason why paintings are better than photos. It’s because they are closer to true human vision… A painters brush can actually come closer to that truth…” (Blake, 25). From the beginning of the book, we see that Anna has already developed a liking for art, specially panting. We later find out that art really
In today’s world students and adults who can use the power of public speaking are a rare find. Lucas states in chapter one that “the American Management Association asked 2,000 managers and executives to rank the skills most essential in today’s workplace. The top idea, was communication skills” (Lucas, 2012 pg. 5). This statement showes us that college students who have taking public speaking truly have an advantage over those who have
They claim this because people can get more career opportunities by the usage of social media. For example, in the text “Don’t Quit Social Media. Put It to Work for Your Career Instead.”, the author writes, “Just one platform, Facebook, has created more than 4.5 million social media indust jobs globally, according to a study conducted by Deloitte… The number of people in the creative industries, advertising and more who make a living on social media is probably much higher” (Gillooly, 2016). This quote supports the other side’s claim because people that use social media have a higher chance of receiving job opportunities and getting employed. Social media, such as Facebook, have created many social media jobs, which is why many believe that social media is beneficial for your future. I disagree with this statement because career opportunities aren't immensely infrequent. If you put in hard work, they will naturally come to you; there is no easy path. For instance, “Interesting opportunities and useful connections are not as scarce as social media proponents claim. In my own professional life, for example, as I improved my standing as an academic and a writer, I began receiving more interesting opportunities than I could handle… As you become more valuable to the marketplace, good things will find you” (Newport, 2016). Therefore, it is evident that if you have abilities, such as
There has been variety of discussion about the English playwright, Sarah Kane. Sarah Kane was an english playwright in the 1990’s and her work contains themes that many believe are unacceptable because they contain explicit themes such as death. Sarah Kane has written seven plays, such as Blasted and 4.48 Psychosis; many of her plays focuses on physical and psychological issues. In the newspaper article “Humanity Gets Only a Bit Part” by Ben Brantley, he discusses how critics describe Kane’s work as shocking and unpleasant. For example, he states in his article, “Others simply called it ‘vile’ and compared it to ‘having your whole head held down in a bucket of offal” ( 2008). In other words, critics who review Sarah Kane’s work describe it as having their heads in a pile of meat, simply put it was disgusting and unagreeable.
Social media can be used in our days as a very helpful tool for many things in changing any person’s life ant attitude. It has a positive impact on the society level. These media will keep the person socially active and open to all what happened in the world. Sharing the latest news, photos, finding new friends and knowing the culture. Also, it allows for millions to keep in touch with each other and update for all the new technology. And, it helps people who have difficulties in communication with others to be more socialized and stronger and develop more confidence to feel more comfortable, protected and relaxed just sitting behind a screen. “It saved me time and money without ever requiring me to leave the house; it salvaged my social life, allowed me to conduct interviews as a reporter and kept a lifeline open to my far-flung extended family” says Leonard(231).
Our society depends on knowledge. A new way to communicate this knowledge quickly is through social media (The Power of Social Media 1). Learning through social networking is very useful because the participant can learn the things he wants at the rate he desires (The Power of Social Media 1). Several social media sites have become largely popular, like Facebook and Twitter. With new sites being created year round, it is quite obvious that social networking sites will be prevalent for a while (The Growth of Social Media 1). The main reason social media has become so common is because of its quick access. Anyone can know virtually anything he desires if enough time and effort are put into finding that info (The Power of Social Media 1). Knowledge alone has a very powerful aspect (The Power of Social Media 1). As humans, we long for a sense of knowledge because we are curious beings. People want to know what is going on around them. Not only does knowledge provide a sense of satisfaction, it also expands our options. (Phoenix 1). The more options there are, the more freedom a pers...
