Alexander Pope born May 21, 1688 in London to a Roman Catholic family. Plagued in early age with Pott’s disease which caused his abnormal four foot six inch height. Pope wouldn’t be expected to amount to much yet was a critical attribute to literature. He was best known for his satirical verse and heroic couplet. Pope is also the third most quoted writer in the oxford dictionary of quotations behind William Shakespeare and Alfred Lord Tennyson. Pope influenced literature through his poetry, identifying, and refining his own positions as a critic and a poet.
Besides Popes importance to literature his life was very complicated. He struggled with health as his disease gave him a hunchback and many complications with it such as high fevers, respiratory difficulties, abdominal pain and inflamed eyes. With his abnormal height and all his various health issues also caused social problems. For example, Pope for the majority of his childhood was alienated. Another issue was the Test Acts that supported the Church of England. This stopped Catholics from voting, teaching, and attending universities. Even with these obstacles Pope was taught to read by his aunt and attended catholic schools which were illegal but allowed in certain places. In 1700 his family was forced to move to Popeswood, in Binfield, Berkshire because of statute preventing Catholics from living within 10 miles of London. This new countryside that he was in was near Windsor Great Park. Pope later on in his career create a poem named Windsor forest in which he would describe the countryside in his area. “Thin trees arise that shun each other's shades. Jane Austen and Alexander Pope had had a myriad of writing styles and techniques from which to express the desired themes of their works. Satire, however, seemed to be the effective light-hearted, yet condescending, tool that enabled them to surface the faults and follies of their moral and elite society. In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, satire is used to the full extent in revealing the glutton within a pious and sacrificing nun, the vain hunter within a poor and meditative monk, and the vulgarity within a honorable woman of society. In Pride and Prejudice and The Rape of the Lock, Austen and Pope use contrasting forms of satire to obtain the same result as Chaucer: to ridicule society's hypocritical and supercilious manner by forcing it to see the absurd truth of what society pretends to be and what it really is. In order to create satire in their literature, Austen and Pope must place an ironic, mocking language in an environment, and allow the language to transform its surroundings into a parody of human moral regression. The essence of satire in Pride and Prejudice and The Rape of the Lock begins with the writer's mocking use of diction, and then spreads to how the characters, tone, and theme of the literature are heightened to a level that identifies with supercilious society.

According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, satire is "a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn." When examining satire of the Renaissance, one has to wonder what a man like Erasmus of Rotterdam would think of today's world, politically and morally speaking. Would a man like Erasmus, who was so outspoken in his own time, be able to stand aside and let the folly flow freely? Where are the Erasmus' of our own time, and who will stand against our government, churches, and other powerful organizations for what is right, even if it requires speaking out against the actions and agendas of these very powerful entities? In Erasmus' Praise of Folly, Erasmus is a staunch adversary of folly within the church and politics of the day. If Erasmus were alive today, he would not only enjoy the freedom of speech which is taken for granted by many today, but he would surely espouse himself to any variety of modern day follies within American politics and the American Catholic church. Especially when it comes to the gross misappropriation the American budget, and the fact that evangelicals across the country supported George W. Bush, a president who has cost not only thousands of lives, but billions of dollars on a war that may have been unnecessary, Erasmus would have not only been disgusted and outraged, but he would have indeed spoken against these modern day follies. Erasmus, were he alive today, would have acted as a quintessential representative for many people who have lost faith in American churches and American government.

There are three main issues that Pope talks about in his long poem "An Essay on Man." First, the poet evokes a timeless vision of humanity in which the universe is connected to a great chain that extends from God to the tiniest form of life. Secondly, Pope discusses God's plan in which evil must exist for the sake of the greater good, a paradox not fully understandable by human reason. Thirdly, the poem accuses human beings of being proud and impious. Pope feels that man claims more insight into the nature of existence then he possesses.
