Aldo Teo Donelli, also known as a”Buff” was born on July 22, 1907 in
Pennsylvania. He retrieved the nickname, “Buff” from his favorite showman “Buffalo” Bill Cody. Struggling with money and being raised by mother Dolores Donelli, Aldo started taking soccer seriously at fifteen years old with the team Morgan FC. At just 15 years
old Aldo Donelli joined the Morgans Strasser FC of Pennsylvania , PA for seven Seasons. After the end of the 7 seasons , he played with the Curry Silver Tops. Because of this, he was chosen out of 18 players for the Men's National Team. They would travel to Italy for the 1934 World Cup and this is where his recognition would start. He was very good in that too. If there is one thing we should take from Aldo, it should be his perseverance. Even though he almost didn't start the game in soccer against Italy in the World Cup, on the urging of Billy Gonsalves, the team’s biggest star, ‘Buff’ was included in the starting line-up. Gonsalves knew what no one else did – ‘Buff’ could score.” He would always give his best and find a way to score. He was so impressive in the two games with Mexico and Italy that he was offered a contract after the World Cup from Lazio, one of the top professional clubs in Italy. But, Donelli would pass on the offer and the USA’s loss to Italy which was the worst loss in World Cup history would be Donelli’s last match as he retired from international play. He ended his career with five goals in two games. Donelli, who almost didn’t start for the U.S., still holds the most lethal strike rate of any player in U.S. Soccer history, almost 70 years later.
