Alcatraz is a super max prison. It is the biggest prison ever built and held the worst criminals of all time. Like, Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Birdman. Alcatraz workers and guards gave them everything they needed to survive, food, water, shelter, clothing and medical care. Everything else had to be earned. They decided to build a super max prison after prohibition came into place. After Alcatraz was built they started to collect prisoners. One after another, more and more came in so they decided to upgrade it and make it stronger. They did make it stronger, but more escapes happened causing destruction to the building. The greatest escape that ever happened at Alcatraz caused a lot of destruction to the building. It was put on by Clarence Anglin, John William Anglin and their friend, Frank Lee Morris. They made life like dummies and survival gear made with stolen and given items, so they were prepared. They dug through the walls and used fake vent covers to hide their digging holes. After prohibition was put into place, Al Capone sold Illegal alcohol without ever getting caught. He sold it at night clubs that were illegal and very well hidden. He was so secretive that he probably would have had a flower shop with a secret door in his night clubs. .
The second most worst prisoner in Alcatraz was George Kelly, aka, Machine Gun Kelly. He was sent there for smuggling liquor and kidnapping. He started being a gangster and crime starter because, he was considered a bad student in school. He got married and had kids but then he lost his job and his wife, so he started smuggling liquor to cure his anger. He got a new girlfriend and eventually ended up kidnapping and killing her and was then sent to

    In the 1970s, prison was a dangerous place. Prison violence and the high numbers of disruptive inmates led prison authorities to seek new ways to control prisoners. At first, prison staff sought to minimize contact with prisoners by keeping them in their cells for a majority of the day. As time went on, the prison authorities began to brainstorm the idea of having entire prisons dedicated to using these kind of procedures to control the most violent and disruptive inmates. By 1984, many states began construction on super-maximum prisons. In California, two supermax facilities were built by the state: Corcoran State Prison in 1988, and then Pelican Bay in 1989. The federal government soon followed suit and in 1994, the “first federal supermax opened, in Florence, Colorado.” It was not much longer before supermax prisons could be seen all over the country (Abramsky). In Wisconsin’s supermax facility, with similar conditions being found in a majority of supermaxes, there are “100-cell housing units” that are in groups of 25 cells. These cells all face a secured central area. Technology plays a major role in keeping the facility to the highest security standards. Every cell’s doors are controlled remotely and the cells include “video surveillance, motion detection and exterior lighting” (Berge). With these technological securities, there are also procedural precautions. Inmates are kept in their cells for 23 hours a day until their sentences are done. This is said to be for prisoner and staff safety, although some feel otherwise. In 2001, 600 inmates at Pelican Bay went on a hunger strike, demanding reform.
