Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was built a maximum high security prison and the most famous. Alcatraz is a prison you would not want to go to and was not built to escape.
Alcatraz was opened from 1934 to 1963, and during its 29 years it gained a reputation of the home to the most famous and dangerous prisoners. It is known to be an escape-proof penitentiary however research information shows three prisoners escaped Alcatraz. Alcatraz’s escape was the most famous escape at any prison.

Inmates were awaken at 6:30 am and counted. At 6:45 am the guards opened the cells and the prisoners marched to the mess hall to eat. At 6:50 am the Lieutenants count the inmates again. At 7:00 am some inmates go to the recreation yard and those not assigned details go to work or back to cells. At 9:30 am the inmates are allowed to rest and go smoke in designated smoke areas. At 9:30 am another head count. 11:30 the inmates stop working and marched to the mess hall for lunch. At 12:00 pm the prisoners return to their cell for lock-up so they can be counted again. He had over 600 gangsters to protect him. George “Machine Gun” Kelly is another famous gangster. He went to prison for being a bootlegger, bank robber and kidnapper. His wife was sentenced to life in Alcatraz too. He also kidnapped a wealthy oil businessman and held him hostage for ransom money. Roy Gardner was a prison escapee, bank robber, professional gambler and the most celebrated outlaw and convict. He stole more than 350,000 dollars in cash. Henry Young was a bank robber and murderer. He attempted to escape Alcatraz with four other inmates. Two of the escapees were shot and one died. Henry was caught and sent to solitary confinement for three years. While in prison he met Fred and Doc Barker. The Barker gang became one of the most dangerous criminal gangs of the 1930s. The prison was for really bad guys.
