The common style of the time which was the Renaissance style focused on the classicism of the ancient Roman and Greek art and focused on the human person and achievement. It is hard to imagine that Durer would continue to use the Gothic style because he just returned from Italy which was thriving on the ideals of the Renaissance. Albrecht Durer continued his theme at the time of using somber colors. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse has somber colors because it is a woodcut which means that Durer carved the image into a piece of wood. The image has a greyish look with the colors ranging from dark grey to light grey. Durer’s Apocalypse series saw end of his Gothic style in woodcuts because soon after he began to be influenced by Italian

Both artists were popular in the Renaissance period because of their contrasting talents. Francis I by Jean Clouet expresses the king’s power through his vibrant and detailed garments. Albrecht Dürer’s self-portrait from 1500 expressed his own power through his manipulation of light and his strong pose. Although both paintings have clear differences with their style, both men are painted in great and very powerful sense.

A painting known as American Gothic was painted in 1930 by Grant Wood. It portrays a farmer with pitchfork (Grant’s dentist) and a woman (Grant’s sister) in front of a house. After Grant Wood won his competition with the painting, it became extremely well known and was often borrowed for cartoons, commercials and novels. Novels such as Gothic literature, even though Gothic literature was “invented” about two hundred years before the painting, people still somehow connected the two. Whenever people read Gothic literatures they would visualize the painting or vice versa. “Gothic literature is part of fiction that became popular during the late 1700s in Europe.”(Brooklyn.cuny.edu) Many of the stories generally have combinations of horror, mystery and romantic with a particular focus of settings. The Italian Renaissance included some of the greatest artists we have ever seen from Leonard Da Vinci, to Michelangelo, and Raphael. The Renaissance took place from the late thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and is know as the ‘rebirth’. The idea that the rebirth of the arts after being asleep for a thousand years is an amazing thing to grasp. This time brought back light to liberal arts, which were on the brink of being extinct. (Murray 2) What is also interesting about art during this time was that most of the art had Christian in its roots, for example, Botticelli’s The Allegory of Spring (Faure 1) is said to have had a Christian interpretation. (Murray) “Every Italian artist, willingly took the title of architect, sculptor, and painter” (Faure 2). At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Italian painters had asked the Flemish painters for their secret techniques because the Italians felt like the language of painting was one that was always meant for them. (Faure 4) The sculptors claimed their inspiration from ancient works. Lastly the Renaissance introduced idea of individualism, which helped the Italians get away from everything that was going on during that time. Art during the Renaissance included painting, sculpting and architecture, all of which were an important part in expressing the idea of individualism and making art what is is today.
