Alas, Babylon Essay
In the book Alas, Babylon, the author, Pat Frank, discusses the condition of the human race. Mainly, his view differs from others because rather than write about the countries in a nuclear war, he writes about people living in the countries that are involved in that war. His discusses these peoples’ progress, both technological and moral, as well as their use of power. These topics make the book as intriguing as it is to read.
Frank, rather than talk about all mankind’s technological advances, talks about how they have hindered man. He says that we have become dependant on these discoveries. He shows this when Dan Gunn and Mark take turns telling Randy all these things that he has, such as a nice car and a refrigerator, are useless when nuclear fallout occurs. It seems that man cannot function for even one minute without using things that were not even available fifty or one hundred years ago. Frank is warning us that there may be a time when we will need to retain the lifestyle of the nineteenth century, and only the people who have the knowledge of this way of life will be fine.
Frank has an interesting view on the way man has progressed morally. I think that he says that we don’t really know our morals until we have them truly questioned. In this he implies that the people who have strong morals, not only will stay true to them, but will survive. An example of this is Randy Bragg. Randy, on the day of nuclear fallout, stopped on the side of the road to help a woman. This shows that he has respect for the human race as a whole. The opposite of this was Edgar Quisenbury. Edgar valued nothing but money. In the end, the absence of money caused Edgar to become an example of Darwin’s “Only the strong” theory as he shot himself.
Power is addressed in the book as something that Americans do not take seriously. The use of this power is not shown so much as who is in power. I will use three examples of this. Bubbah Offenhouse was in charge of making everyone aware of what to do in case of fallout. However, he chose not to even hand out information on this because he didn’t want to think about it.
He claims Frank did not show the true flooding of poverty if nuclear war were to happen, which is true but he shows this in another way throughout the novel. Brin talks about remembering atomic bomb drill warnings in school. Nuclear war was a true fear during this time period, which is clearly seen throughout this novel. “.we school kids pictured a burning flash whenever teacher sprang another surprise duck-and- cover drill, sending pupils diving under desks with the chilling command drop!” (Brin 1).
What is the you thoroughly understand the term “allegory” and that you can discuss “Babylon Revisited” as an allegory?—This question is garbled and does not make sense.
The short story by the waters of Babylon and the movie planet of the apes were both futuristic stories. They also both showed the evil sides of today’s man and the chaos and mass destruction that we are capable of accomplishing. They portrayed today’s man as selfish, violent, and full of hate and rage. By the waters of Babylon was written from the point of view of a boy close to becoming a man who knew nothing of his past civilization. Whereas in the movie planet of the apes it was from the point of view of a man that had come nearly directly from that past civilization. The main people in charge keep knowledge from the public so they do not know the evils that they are capable of as to protect them from making the same mistake.
In life, one must realize that it is impossible to be perfect and so there are always going to be things that one will regret. Modernist author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, in his short story, "Babylon Revisited", tells the story of a man who has made many mistakes in his life and is living with these regrets and trying desperately to bring his life back together. In the story, Fitzgerald draws heavily upon the current events of the world he is living in and uses the present to depict the past.
Power helped some people in this novel by helping them do what was right. Like George, he was the new guy, the guys still accepted him because he seemed like a kind and trustworthy person. So he never really had problems with people except Curley but Curley was just that kind of person because he thought he was better than everyone else and bigger. He also had power though since his dad owned the farm he practically could do whatever he wanted so no one really wanted to mess with them because if he wanted to he could get people canned. His dad had power over everything since he owned the farm he controlled who worked there and who did not and what kind of jobs people would do. Slim had power too because he was kind of like a leader and he was a nice guy. He was also very respectful and knew where his place was and did not run into trouble since no one had a reason to mess with him. Carlson had some power to in this book when he took control and killed Candy’s dog, “I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with.” (47)
From the displays of power that have been shown through out this essay, we see that this story is a story about power. Power is the story is primarily about peoples need for some small amount of power to survive in life and to feel that hey have a purpose within their society which every society it may be whether its is Gilead or Nazi Germany or modern day Britain.
An example of power being abused during the book is when Amir frames Hassan for stealing his watch. Since Amir’s social class is much higher than Hassan who is a Hazzarah Amri Knew Hassan would do anything for him, and still stay completely loyal. I think Amir caused complete havoc to everyone in that situation.
Euthanasia is the act of ending a person’s life through lethal injection or through the removement of treatment. Euthanasia comes from the Greek word meaning “good death.” When a death ends peacefully, it is recognized as a good death. In modern society, euthanasia has come to mean a death free of any pain and anxiety brought on through the use of medication; this can also be called mercy killing, deliberately ending someone’s life in order to end an individual’s suffering. Anything that would ease human suffering is good. Euthanasia eases human suffering. Therefore, euthanasia is good. Because active euthanasia is considered as suicide or murder, it is a very controversial issue and therefore, illegal in most places. Although there are always
Upon taking the Myers Briggs personality test on the human metrics website I was not surprised that I received the conclusion of an ENTJ or “the natural born leader”. The role of an ENTJ is that you conduct yourself in a manner that is very logical and rational (“Personality”). The Myers Briggs Type Indicator test has been around for over 65 years and has continually evolved to become more accurate in identifying personality traits. I find that the ENTJ type of personality reflections are accurate due to the fact that I am a no nonsense type of leader that likes to take charge and get the job done. In order to become a better leader for your organization you can take the time to educate yourself on the other 15 types of personality traits. This will help a leader in better understanding the views of their coworkers and will give them the tools of deal...
What is euthanasia? The word euthanasia comes from Greek words. “eu” means good and “thanatos” means death. When these two words are put together, it means “good death”. However, in the dictionary, the meaning of euthanasia is “the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of a hopelessly sick or injured individual in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy”. Although this definition is meant to indicate euthanasia, it may give people a negative idea about euthanasia. Most people who choose to have euthanasia are patients with incurable or painful diseases such as cancer or Hepatitis B. These people go through a lot of pain every day; so don’t they have the right to choose death over going through a life of both physical and mental suffering? Euthanasia gives people with diseases like such, to have a good death without going through the suffering and pain. Yet, euthanasia is only legal in four countries and 3 out of 50 of the states in America. Many
Power is authority and strength, which is any form of motive force or energy, ability to act, or control. When too much power is given, a dictatorship government can form, in which all decisions are made by one authority. In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell the author portrays how “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton).
In my opinion, power can be both positive and negative. There are many individuals that use power to help individuals who truly need helping. However, there are some people to take the word "POWER" to the extreme. For example, if you have an individual who just got promoted to manager, and they try to enforce ridiculous rules on you just to look like a hot shot. This would be using power in a negative way. Also, as a president there are many ways you can use power in a positive setting: making more jobs, providing healthcare, and much more. However, there is some negativity: vetoing an action that is very beneficial to everyone in the community, turning countries against us, and providing fake information to the media to look good. So, therefore,
Many health problems are caused by obesity. All-in-all the problems start at home and the lack of knowledge about dietary guidelines.
Euthanasia was first recorded in Greek and Roman times. The word euthanasia originates from the two Greek words “eu”, meaning good, or easy
