Akhenaten is considered by many historians to be one of the most fascinating and individuals of the ancient world. It is been said that he created the first monotheistic religion. Did he do so?
We will explore this question, along with other factions of his life and reign.
In order to see how Akhenaten is considered a revolutionary and how his reign is different from those before his a look at the role of earlier “traditional” kings is needed. Then we will examine the royal house in Egyptian society during Amenhoten III's reign. What did he believe in? What of the relationship was there between father and son, a co-regency? And what of his mother, Tiye? What influence did she have on him, if any?
We will also look at references to Aten during Amenhoten III's rule.
To understand how revolutionary the worship of Aten was we need to look at the worship of other Egyptian gods and in particular Amon-Re.
Then a peek at the first years of the rule of then Amenhoten IV . Then the change occurs after about five years. Amenhoten IV changes his name to Akhenaten and declares that Aten is the god of his worship. There are several possibilities of why he decided to change to the worship of Aten, and move his capital. This man, the Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, promoted monotheism primarily because of religious intentions and not for political or personal gain. He selected one God, Aten, and it was this deity that was the center of attention during Amenhotep’s reign. Amenhotep IV, who would later take the name Akhenaten, would lead a controversial reign which would result in failure. He would eventually be deemed the “heretic king” (Assmann 149), but what was it that earned him this title? Was Amenhotep IV truly a “heretic king?”

This study will show that it was Hatshepsut the Pharaoh?s devotion to the god Amen and her protection of the maat of 18th Dynasty Egypt that allowed her to forge her successful New Kingdom regime.

As for monotheistic resemblance in other cultures, the Greek god Zeus is seen as a leader of the other gods, but not independent of them. Akhenaton’s short-lived reform of Egyptian religion reveres Aton as the source of all life. This is the earliest religious expression of a belief in a sole god of the universe. Akhenaton’s challenge to the power of the priests did not last beyond his own lifetime.

This allowed him to build many of the impressive structures that are found throughout Egypt today. He went on military campaigns and not only strengthened but expanded the boarders of Egypt throughout his campaigns. Amenhotep III was a successful pharaoh because he completed the roles of a pharaoh exceptionally well; these roles are High Priest, Administrator and Military commander. In the Iliad, we are only exposed to a handful of women; however in the Odyssey, many more women become integral parts in the story but with little character development. This is expected because in times of war, the only women that these men were exposed to were concubines or their wives which both had little significance because they were preoccupied with battle.
