Introduction The Airport Security Coordinator (ASC) is a key role in airport security. In addition to being the direct contact for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the ASC is responsible for drafting and carrying out requirements set forth in the Airport Security Program (ASP) (Price & Forrest, 2016). The following factors will be considered in drafting an ASP.
Assessing Vulnerabilities
A complete and thorough assessment should prioritize assets by their value, or what impact they would have on the remaining infrastructure if lost, so the proper amount of security can be provided for each area or asset (TSA, 2011). For instance, airport maintenance and facilities buildings may not require the same level of security as say an aircraft, control tower, or fuel storage area. Vulnerabilities assessments identify boundaries to secure and unsecure areas. Subsequently, as boundaries are identified, requiring the segregation of the general public, there is need to assess security protocols. The ASC must carefully analyze the interactions as well as the relationships between their geographical placements. For this discussion we will examine aircraft movement areas, fuel facilities, and terminal parking areas. First, aircraft movement areas lie within the AOA, and consist of runways, taxiways, loading ramps, aprons, and aircraft parking areas (Price & Forrest, 2016). Controlled access to the AOA is at minimal levels, in some cases requiring only signage to define boundaries and warn of unauthorized access (Price & Forrest, 2016).
