In Brother Grimm’s “Brother Lustig”, the main character, Brother Lustig, is initially portrayed as an honest, inexperienced and stupid young man, who shares all his possessions with others. For this reason, when analyzing Brother Grimm’s tale form a Jungian psychoanalytic perspective, will become a prime example of a character experiencing individuation, for he eventually becomes a more selfish, cunning and independent person. Through meeting his archetypes, Brother Lustig goes from an honest, stupid and generous person, who shares his wealth and possessions with the less fortunate ones to a cunning, selfish and self-sufficient trickster. Brother Lustig’s burgeoning conscious is demonstrated through an analysis of his Jungian archetypes, with the shapeshifting beggar, acting as his positive shadow, and St. Peter personifying as his symbolic Self.
An analysis if Lustig’s positive shadow, St. Peter as the poor shapeshifting beggar, is particularly useful in understanding the various challenges which the main character of the story will eventually have to face later on. In the folk tale, the beggar is portrayed as a cunning and intelligent trickster, who changes his appearance every time he “begged a gift [form Lustig]”(368). Every time the disguised beggar “placed himself in another shape” and asks for charity, Brother Lustig will always fall in his trap and give him “a quarter of the loaf of his bread and one kreuzer” (368), for he eventually have nothing left. By the end of the story, Brother Lustig becomes an intelligent trickster, capable of surviving alone thanks to his ability to smart and trick other people. In this context. It is evident that St.Peter as the shapeshifting beggar is a positive shadow since he embodies the qualities that the independent and grown up Lustig needs. By becoming more selfish and cunning, Lustig is finally capable of helping people by using his intelligence against “the nine devils”(376) by putting them in his knapsack”(376). By the end of the story, it becomes clear that his cunning and intelligence help him to become a more independent person capable of to survive without the help of others. He is no longer tricked by others and this shows clearly that he is on a further step towards individuation.
The most important step in Lustig’s maturation to a man capable of surviving alone is the realization of Self, personified once again by St. Peter. Through his journey with St. Peter, Brother Lustig eventually maturates. At the very beginning of the story, he was a stupid, honest, selfless soldier who does not care about how to survive the day after.
In conclusion, Brother shows his self-interest in how he treats his younger brother. He treats his younger brother, Doodle, as something to ‘fix’ and he cannot accept his brother as he is. When Doodle finally learns to walk, Brother’s selfish need for a more ‘ideal’ little brother is not satisfied for long. Soon he demands a little brother who can run, jump, climb, swim, swing on vines, and row a boat. When he gives Doodle lessons for these activities, he does not do so for concern about Doodle wanting to be able to do them, but because he wants Doodle to be able to be a ‘normal’ brother.
Carl Jung was a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist who developed many theories concerning the unconscious mind. Jung’s theories state that the unconscious part of a human’s psyche has two different layers, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious. The personal unconscious is unique to every individual; however, the collective unconscious “is inborn.” (Carl Jung, Four Archetypes, 3) The collective unconscious is present in everyone’s psyche, and it contains archetypes which are “those psychic contents which have not yet been submitted to conscious elaboration” (Jung, Archetypes, 5); they are templates of thought that have been inherited through the collective unconscious. Jung has defined many different archetypes such as the archetype of the mother, the archetype of the hero, the archetype of the shadow, etc. These Jungian archetypes are often projected by the collective unconscious onto others. If the novel A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is examined through a Jungian archetypal lens it is possible to discern different archetypes projected by the protagonist’s unconscious self to illustrate the effects of the collective unconscious on character and plot analysis.
On July 18, 1926, Margaret Laurence was born to Scottish father, Robert Wemyss, and Irish mother Verna Simpson Wemyss. They lived in Mrs. Wemyss' hometown of Neewapa, Manitoba, until Margaret's move to Winnipeg in 1944. Margaret was but 4 years old when her mother died of a kidney infection. It was at this point that her aunt came to care for her and later marry her father. They were shortly thereafter moved into Margaret's grandfathers home. Margaret found living with her grandfather to be a very difficult task, and much of her writing in "A Bird in the House" reflects her relationship with her grandfather using the character Vanessa and her rough, uncaring grandfather. Like Margaret, the character Vanessa is an aspiring writer who is faced with many obstacles in her life. The grandfather-granddaughter relationship is one of the most prominent aspects reflected from Margaret's own life. Vanessa grandfather was oftentimes hard on her and the family, and showed lack of compassion and caring, in general. His rules were strict and always enforced, thought sometimes challenged by Vanessa. Margaret thought this of her grandfather until later in life, again, like Vanessa.
The thought of Freud has a total focus on an individual’s mind and how this internal struggle effects how humans interact within society. Freud argues that every human has three functional parts of their personality that exist within the mind itself: the id, super-ego and the ego. Thurschwell describes these three layers as how they relate to each other. The id is the deepest level of the unconscious, which is dominated by the pleasure principle and has no concept of time except for the present, demanding instant gratification of sexual and aggressive (Eros and Thanatos) urges. The superego originates through identification with the individuals parents, functioning as an internal censor witch represses the dangerous urges of the id. The ego starts as part of the id but is more sensible as it has knowledge of the outside world. Unlike the id, the ego is dominated by the instinct to protect oneself. A quick glance at Life of Pi and a reader may take away the idea that it is an easy read and a novel full of imagination, but take a Freudian view on the work and it transforms into a representation of the human psyche. Martel’s novel takes the reader on a journey with Pi as he struggles for his own survival. Pi experiences a breakdown of each component that makes up ones personality according to Freud throughout the novel. One by one id, ego and super ego both express a huge factor in Pi’s choices and emotions throughout his story. The readers are also introduced to an alternate ending to choose from. This alternate ending plays a key role in understanding how to view the novel through Freudian lenses. Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis clarifies many troubling issues raised in the novel Life of Pi.
Writing this paper will allow my knowledge to expand on early fairy tales. I want to learn things I didn't know before, and I want to learn about the history of fairy tales. Fairy tales are not just for entertainment. They are important because it teaches the younger and older audience about morals, and it teaches about justice between the good and evil. The comparison I make between Grimm's fairy tales and modern fairy tales are huge. The morals in Grimm's tales are deeper than modern fairy tales. Jacob and Wilhelm use twisted and gory descriptions that impacted me to realize the consequences of reality. To me, the brothers are showing people that life will not be so happy, and easy. Modern tales sugar coat problematic situations, while Jacob and Wilhelm show a darker side to make their moral more meaningful and realistic to the real world.
Arthur Schnitzler was a contemporary of Freud. He was six years younger than Freud and many people believed that Schnitzler's work was a reflection of Freud’s theories. Though Schnitzler wrote many texts and most of them contained Freud’s ideas; this essay will analyze Lieutenant Gustl from Five Great German Short Stories through Freud’s perspective.
The mind of the human being is a complex, unique, and unpredictable system. While unveiling the mysteries of the human mind is not an easy task, psychoanalysts attempt to peel back the layers of the human psyche to better understand the human race. Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung are two such psychoanalysts who analyzed human behavior in connection to the mind and also scrutinized the connection between the subconscious and conscious mind. The transformations and complications of the human mind are often displayed in literary characters such as Sydney Carton from Charles’ Dickens A Tale of Two Cities. Due to Sydney Carton’s love for Lucie Manette, Sydney Carton develops into an archetypal, Christ-like hero as he overcomes his id, superego, introverted nature, and low self-worth to unify his subconscious and conscious states.

Both stories will be discussed in detail and the author will explain message he/she felt the philosopher was trying to relay to the audience and how their own philosophy compares.
I chose to research the genre of fairy tales, specifically the ones written and told by the Grimm brothers. Fairy tales took shape in sixteenth century Italy as literature for adults. They are known to be children’s stories about magical and imaginary beings in wonderful lands. They can also be described as a fabricated story, especially one intended to deceive the mind. It typically features European fantasy characters. The characters may be distinguished from other folk tales such as legends. They can also be found in oral and literary forms. The term is also used to describe something happy, also known as a “fairy tale ending”. The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace.
The Brothers Grimm adaptation of “Hansel and Gretel,” is one of many fairy tales in Grimm’s works and as well as in many others that introduce the story with a weak family. Weak defined as in a family that does not follow the “ideal family structure”(SEC SOURCE), such as having the protagonists family lacking an authoritative father and or caring mother figure. With this as such a common way to introduce a story, in this story in particular, it is utilized and has more of a developmental trajectory for both the protagonist and the reader itself. Grimm exercises a ______ of broken families in means to develop the protagonist and educate the reader. However, one cannot fully understand Grimm’s purpose and safely assume what an “ideal family structure” consists of. In order to do so, historical context and ____ must be analyzed.
The following will analyse the Psychodynamic theory founded by Sigmund Freud. It will focus on the components of the ‘mind’ including the Conscious, the pre-conscious proper and the Unconscious. Examining his structure of Personality with reference to The’ Id’, ‘Ego’ and ‘Super-ego’. It will discuss Freud’s proposal of stages within his ‘psychosexual development’. It will then focus on Carl Rogers Humanistic theory, explaining his concept of the ‘Actualizing tendency’ and incorporating his creations of ‘Self concept’, the ‘Organismic self’ and the ‘Ideal self’. As a contribution to Roger’s work also highlighting Abraham Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of needs’. Freud and Rogers will then be compared and contrasted, focusing on the human developmental stage of childhood.
