I hope you are doing well. We spoke awhile back about the scholarship I received from the African American committee. I followed the instructions in the email you gave me but I have yet to receive a response. I just wanted to make sure that I had done what I needed to receive the scholarship award.
1.) In addition to excelling academically, Ron Brown Scholars feel a deep commitment to use the tremendous opportunities afforded them to give back to others. This is manifested in their dedication to personal involvement with the RBS Program and the hands-on community service work performed by each of the Scholars. A strong philosophy of the Ron Brown Scholar Program is that individual service on the grassroots level has the capability to affect great change on a global scale. With so many issues facing our communities today, what issue would you like to see addressed by our group and how would you leverage your potential position as a member of the RBS community to develop a solution?
In this brief report, I will be examining common practices, policies and resources that support Black women attending Princeton University. Included is a brief review of national averages in regards to higher education attainment and a rationale for continued rhetoric on this topic. My interest in this topic stem from my experience at State University’s Women Studies Program. While the conversation around gender is necessary and crucial, little attention was given to discussions of how race and gender affect an individual’s lived experience. I was constantly aware of my lack of representation among students who were in those classes and the faculty who taught.
I have attached my Howard University Freshman Scholarship (HUFS) appeal with this letter for your
Through out history education has been a topic of many concerns. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established to try and provide freed slaves education they were not able to obtain. For African Americans in the 20th century attending school was a burden. The children had to withstand long walks to get to their designated schools, being denied classes that the white students had in their schools, outdated books and hand me down classroom materials. African Americans all across the United States fought for their kids rights to get a good education, education provided to white only schools. There was a period of time schools were able to legally deny a student acceptance into their institutions based solely on the color of their skin. Many African Americans tried and majority of them got denied. Students at all levels were being denied, from Pre-K all the way up to college. After many attempts to integrate schools parents of the children being denied education just like the white kids, they realized it would be easier to just build their own schools.
The aspect of African-American Studies is key to the lives of African-Americans and those involved with the welfare of the race. African-American Studies is the systematic and critical study of the multidimensional aspects of Black thought and practice in their current and historical unfolding (Karenga, 21). African-American Studies exposes students to the experiences of African-American people and others of African descent. It allows the promotion and sharing of the African-American culture. However, the concept of African-American Studies, like many other studies that focus on a specific group, gender, and/or creed, poses problems. Therefore, African-American Studies must overcome the obstacles in order to improve the state of being for African-Americans.
Next is John Henrik Clark, who refers to African America Studies as Africana Studies because he believes that Black tells you how you look, not who you are. He goes on to state that he calls African American Studies “a dilemma at the crossroads of history” (Clark 32). This is because European people knew history well enough to distort it and use it, as well as political weapons such as the gun and bible, to control the world. This is the reason why a look at African culture will show what Africana Studies are about or should be about. Africana Studies should embrace the Africans all around the world, in places like Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean Islands even those in Asia and the Pacific Islands. Clarke states that Africa is
I believe we should award this scholarship at a scholarship banquet or luncheon and invite the press, community partners, faculty, staff, students, etc. I believe we should honor and invite Ulysses “Skip” Bennet (BSC first black graduate) to the banquet/luncheon. We should also honor Marti Turnipseed. In the future, I believe we should seek the help of Alumni and generous donors to increase the budget for the student of color
When people hear the word 'diversity', they often think in terms of black and white. I believe the true meaning of diversity is not simply about skin color, economic background or the face value of any other characteristic, rather it is the increased knowledge and sensitivity gained from unique experiences. The strength of diversity then comes from having many points of view and trying to reconcile them by finding common truths or resolving differences amongst people. Being a person of mixed heritage, my father is black and my mother is white, has definitely affected my life and contributed to the development of qualities that enhance my ability to embrace the uniqueness of those around me. Being raised in a single parent household and the values passed on to me by my mother have also been strong influences in my life. My greatest contribution to my community is the ability to create relationships between people of diverse backgrounds and a desire to understand others' beliefs.
Being raised in a Christian household allowed me to appreciate the value of helping others in need, and I am honored to be selected to apply for this scholarship for my dedication in my studies. The LCC Academic Achievement Scholarship will help me achieve my goal of helping others as a Registered Nurse. Laredo as my hometown, I have seen a health need in the community, which is why I plan to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree at TAMIU and work at the local hospital. As I devote time and effort towards my education, I have gladly been able to maintain my 4.0 GPA and be admitted onto the LCC Dean’s List three times.
Toyota Financial Services donated $60,000 grants to help underserved communities, just in time for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This gift helped raise awareness of the importance of education in young people in minority groups. Will other firms like BMW and Honda join in?
Further, African American publications of the time were not unanimous in their criticism of Confederate mythology, especially in the public realm. While the African American newspaper The Dallas Express, often relayed cynical and somber news of Confederate heritage, another African American periodical of Texas, The Houston Informer, spoke of Confederate Veterans in the same heroic light as did many white Southern publications. Writing on the Arlington Cemetery, the Informer noted Confederates were placed by, “the most splendid monument to the heroic dead ever erected by any nation,” and “one could not wish to lie down to final rest in more beautiful surroundings.”
Hello, my Saron Berhane. I am first year undergraduate here at Salem College, intending on double majoring in chemistry and mathematics. I’m trying to start an African Student Association (ASA) student organization here at Salem and I’m looking for an adviser for this group.
African-Americans make up approximately 13% of the United States population according to U.S. Census (2001). However, despite representing 13% of the population there is misrepresentation in mental health services for African-American people. We know that research has shown many different indications to explain the lack of representation. Poverty is one of the many explanations given, U.S. census data for the 13.1% of the U.S. population identifying themselves as African American, the poverty rate in 2012 was 27.2%. This poverty rate compares with a 9.7% poverty rate for non-Hispanic Whites (Snowden, 2014). Another study explain treatment differences between African-Americans and European American, according to Schwartz & Feisthamel (2009)
There are many good athletes in professional sports today. There are many good athletes in college sports today also. Some of the biggest names in sports are Mark McGwire, Steve Young, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, and so on. Now, imagine if all of those players never made it to the pros. What would happen to professional sports? Why are they in the pros now? To make it into professional sports you need more than just talent. You need opportunity. College scholarships not only give athletes the opportunity to reach the professional ranks, but also give the chance for many players to earn a degree in higher education.
