Nick is the narrative reader in The Great Gatsby. Gatz was a poor person that changes his name to Gatsby. Tom was a cheater and was unfaithful to Daisy. Daisy was a flirt and rich. Myrtle is a poor women that lived over her and her husband’s garage shop. Myrtle would let Tom push her around because he was a rich man that would let Myrtle forget that she was poor.
“She never loved you, do you hear he cried. She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me (Fitzgerald 139)”. Tom is married to Daisy (Lisca). Even though daisy is marring Tom, Daisy has feeling for Gatsby (Lisca). Tom and Daisy relationship is wrong because they are married. People may say that Tom and Daisy does not love each other. When it was a week after their honeymoon, Tom and a girl got a wreck and the girl broke her arm and was a maid from the hotel where Tom and Daisy had their honeymoon (Lisca). Daisy was remembering a time at their wedding where the thought that tom collapse on the floor but it was someone else (Fitzgerald 136).
Daisy knows that Tom is cheating on her with Myrtle; Tom has a mistress named Myrtle (Hays, “Oxymoron”). Tom is seeing a girl named Myrtle Wilson. When Nick followed Tom to New York and saw Tom, pick up Myrtle, which is Tom’s mistress (Hays, “Oxymoron”). Tom told Myrtle to sit in another seat because he did not want people to think he was cheating on Daisy (Lisca). Myrtle is married George Wilson who owns Wilson’s gas station. When Nick saw, Tom goes in the Garage of George Wilson to see Myrtle (Fitzgerald 28). Mr. Wilson does not know that Myrtle is cheating him with Tom. Tom and Daisy have had an unhealthy relationship in their time together. Tom and Daisy over their time together have constantly been cheating on each other, even from their wedding day. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays Tom and Daisy’s marriage as very unhealthy in The Great Gatsby. The story also presents a deep respect for understanding intellectual empathy by showing many sides of the characters stories. Tom and Daisy’s marriage has much to do with the plot and ultimately leads to Gatsby’s death. The Great Gatsby portrays the relationships in many different angles that help with intellectual empathy.

“The Great Gatsby” was a extremely sophisticated novel; it expressed love, money, and social class. The novel is told by Nick Carraway, Gatsby’s neighbor. Nick had just moved to West Egg, Longs Island to pursue his dream as a bond salesman. Nick goes across the bay to visit his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan in East Egg. Nick goes home later that day where he saw Gatsby standing on his dock with his arms out reaching toward the green light. Tom invites Nick to go with him to visit his mistress Mrs. Myrtle Wilson, a mid class woman from New York. When Nick returned from his adventure of meeting Myrtle he chooses to turn his attention to his mysterious neighbor, Gatsby. Gatsby is a very wealthy man that host weekly parties for the
Tom suspects that Gatsby and Daisy are having a relationship, but has no evidence to prove it. However, whenever Tom would leave the room, Daisy would immediately run into Gatsby’s arms to show her affection. To their dismay, Tom sees this: “She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw” (Fitzgerald 126). This leads to a confrontation between Gatsby and Tom, where Gatsby boldly declares that “Your wife [Daisy] doesn’t love you …She’s never loved you. She loves me” (Fitzgerald 139). Gatsby feels untouchable, and his confidence in Daisy’s love for him allows him to declare this to Tom. However, Tom slowly gains control of Daisy, reminding her of the experiences they shared together. Realizing this, Gatsby becomes desperate, and attempts to force Daisy into saying things she doesn’t believe, but Daisy tells Gatsby the truth: “’Even alone I can’t say I never loved Tom… It wouldn’t be true’” (Fitzgerald 142). Gatsby is delusional because his only thought is proving to Tom that Daisy doesn’t love him, and fails to realize that he is slowly losing Daisy. He is once again so absorbed by Daisy that he fails to realize what is going on around him. Even after Daisy runs over a woman murdering her in cold blood, Gatsby is willing to take the blame for her, and states “of course I’ll say [to the police] I was [driving]” (Fitzgerard 154). Gatsby still loves Daisy after she commits murder, which is a testament to his obsession and delusion over her. At the climax of the fight, while arguing with Jay, Tom states ”You’re crazy!’ he exploded’ I can’t speak about what happened five years ago because I didn’t know Daisy then’[...] and she loves me now’(Fitzgerald 131).Although, Tom isn’t the one who should be talking about “relationship”, he brought up a strong valid point. Tom didn’t know Daisy that much and got married months after Gatsby left for war. Daisy didn’t want to wait for him to return and knew he was still in Europe. She wasn’t interested in Gatsby anymore, but Tom. In search for agreement, Gatsby walked over to Daisy and says” ‘ Daisy, that’s all over now,’ he said earnestly ‘It doesn’t matter anymore, just tell him the truth - that you never loved him and it all wiped out forever.’[...] ‘why how could I love him- possibly?’ ‘ You never loved him’ ”(Fitzgerald 139). Daisy won’t be able to wipe all that out of her memories. Of course, she had to loved tom at some point of their marriage. They had a child and been through so much. The line of attack we use in order to identify individuals around us is an intriguing thing. Our perception is forever shifting, forever building, and affected not only by the person’s actions, but by the actions of those around them. In Scott F. Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby Nick Caraway’s perception of Jay Gatsby is always changing. All the way through the novel, Nick’s perception of Gatsby changes from him perceived as a rich chap, to a man that lives in the past, to a man trying to achieve his aspirations but has failed.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the most compelling twentieth century writers, (Curnutt, 2004). The year 1925 marks the year of the publication of Fitzgerald’s most credited novel, The Great Gatsby (Bruccoli, 1985). With its critiques of materialism, love and the American Dream (Berman, 1996), this dramatic idyllic novel, (Harvey, 1957), although poorly received at first, is now highly regarded as Fitzgerald’s finest work (Rohrkemper, 1985) and is his publisher, Scribner 's most popular title, (Donahue, 2013). The novel achieved it’s status as one of the most influential novels in American history around the nineteen fifties and sixties, over ten years after Fitzgerald 's passing, (Ibid, 1985)
