Marian Wilde accounts in her article, Do uniforms make schools better?, that Virginia Draa, assistant professor at Youngstown State University was amazed by the results of the research involving 64 public schools in Ohio with guidelines of wearing uniform. Ms. Draa said, "I really went into this thinking uniforms don't make a difference, but I came away seeing that they do.” She agreed that the “attendance, graduation and proficiency pass rates” of these schools improved significantly (Wilde). There are more reasons to advocate the wearing of uniforms such as it save time to set up, it cost less money to buy, it removes social and economic distinction in the campus.
Uniform basically is describe as simple button down shirt with school emblem and sometimes coupled with a tie, blazers and creased skirt (Wilde). A parent or a student may spend lesser to buy sets of uniforms than to buy wardrobe for the school. It is easy to prepare and would save time because it is always ready than selecting clothes not appropriate for the school may it be too worn out to cause embarrassment or...
Ever wonder what it would look like to have all students wearing the same white polo shirt, black pants, and a district sweater walking in the hallway? Nowadays, public school and many districts are discussing the possibilities of enforcing the uniform policy. In most places, many private schools already require students to have their mandatory uniforms; however, there are only a few public schools adopting this mandatory school-uniform polices as one of their enrollment requirements. The reason why not all public schools participated was because people believe that they are violating the freedom of choice when enforcing this mandatory uniform policy; yet problems such as bullying and segregation, emerged in these schools. Some people still think uniforms have no benefits at all. However, all public school students should be required to wear uniforms because it would improve the academic performance, reduce the violent behaviors based on appearance judgment, and provide less stress for both parents and students.
Doing research I have found out that the university of Missouri assistant professor, David Brunsma said that he conducted a survey. In that survey it showed that bringing in uniforms made academics worse in schools. David tested the school with uniforms for half a year and the results said that students did better without uniforms. However this survey was only conducted in one school. In 39 other schools in Ohio they say that they had better attendance and graduation rates. Uniforms are already taking place in twenty different states and most of them have good opinions.
Many opposing views feel that uniforms are a “Band-Aid Approach” to more serious problems throughout the school community says Bárbara C. Cruz. (43) These are problems like violence, bullying and poor academic behavior. Said by a high school junior “Uniforms would not transform anyone into a good student, just dress up a bad one”. (Cruz 44) It is true that uniforms are not the solution to all educational problems, but they are a good place to start. Although, when schools begin to enforce a uniform policy it shows that the community is acknowledging there are problems to be solved and working together to try something new. Quoting two school safety experts, “Instituting a dress code alone will not solve the problem of violence in the schoo...
It is a great idea for schools to implement a policy on school uniforms because statistics show that students who wear uniforms make better grades, the male students are not going to be distracted by what the female students are (or aren't) wearing, and students feel a sense of fairness with one another as they are all wearing the same things and when students are at one with one another their confidence soars, which leads to doing better at school. Student uniforms helps with reducing the amount of bullying therefore the students who would normally be bullied now have a much better disposition while at school, which will lead to a healthier safer learning environment. When students feel less threatened at school, they can concentrate better which leads to better grades. The schools which have an enforced uniform policy have properly dressed students. When teenage girls, want to impress teenage boys dress inappropriately it causes a lot of distractions and trouble. The girls are also envious of on one another so unrest is caused in the classroom throughout the day, not only with the boys who are looking at the girls, but also at the girls who are jealous of the ones getting the attention.
Uniforms in public schools are becoming more and more accepted around the world. “Over the last two decades, the debate over the implementation of school uniform policies in public schools has been a consistent presence in schools and districts around the United States.” (Sanchez, 345). Teachers, parents and school administrators feel the need for school uniforms as a positive way to increase school safety and increase academic performance. Even though school uniforms are not the most popular choice among students and parents, the positive impact school uniforms make on students and the school outweigh the negative opinions.
School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices.
Some schools say that wearing uniforms are better, while others say that it is not. First let’s discuss schools that require uniforms. You’ll most likely find them throughout Britain, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and most African counties. Only private school use them to distinguish them from other private or public schools. If student wear uniforms then they would feel like they belong to the school. But some religions won’t let the female or male wear certain kinds of clothing and will be pulled out at an earlier age. Uniforms also prohibit gang related problems like wearing gang colors or styles. This can be avoided by issuing a dress code prohibiting certain types of clothing but still allowing the children the freedom of picking clothes that they want. Uniforms are not practical. They are often old fashioned and uncomfortable to wear. The cheapness is often bad. They over heat when you wear them in the summer and they don’t insulate heat in the winter. There’s no real evidence that proves wearing uniforms will reduce crime in school. But there will be bulling with kids from other schools. Wearing uniforms will show that a student goes to a certain school and will be easy to identify who is “the rival” and bulling or attacks will increase between schools. Dress code can eliminate the “us-and-them” feelings that are made with uniforms. Uniforms are expensive when bought to be customized and is hard for some parents to buy. Uniforms are only produced in small quantities and are made in special shops so the price is usually increased.
School uniforms reduce the stress children feel when trying to fit in with their peers. Without them, some children may be alienated because their economic background reflects the clothes they wear. Children tend to break off into “cliques” and uniforms could possibly help unite students. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through other outlets other than fashion can help children forge friendships based on their common interests.
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be adopted. Opposition is always a factor when trying to make changes. Taking all things into consideration, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be required in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents.
A major reason that schools should have uniforms is because students will get along better. They wouldn’t compare each other based on whose wearing what. This is opposed to a school with no uniform some students will feel inferior to the one’s wearing brand name clothes. Also uniforms lower the chances of jealousy between the students. The students would feel more unified with each other. Further more school uniforms can alleviate school violence, because it will help kids with less money escape the teasing they would get if the school had no uniforms. Also uniforms will help differentiate students from gan...
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
“We cannot forget that reinforcing economic differences drives students further apart when schools should be drawing them closer together.” There are many problems in public schools with no uniforms. The use of school uniforms could eliminate some of these problems. Although school uniforms may take away a child’s individuality, there are more benefits than disadvantages to having school uniforms in public schools because school uniforms lessen the money spent on the latest fashion trends and school uniforms provide a positive school climate. A school uniform should be a simple outfit.
Students who wear uniforms can focus on academics, rather than on what others are wearing (Walmsley, 2011). Some opponents "emphasize the paucity of empirical research on the effects of school uniforms on academic achievement and students’ behavior" (Mitchell & Knechtle, 2003). In fact, we do not need to do the empirical research because we can see the benefit of school uniforms on academic achievement and students’ behavior in the real life. For example, teachers saw that when the students wear school uniforms, they will be more settled and ready to learn (Walmsley, 2011). In addition, LaPoint, Alleyne, Mitchell and Lee, (2003) talked about Lopez 's reporting that showed the benefit of school uniforms on school climate, attendance, and students discipline for elementary and middle school students in the Long Beach Unified School District . Really, we can see the positive impact for school uniforms policy on students’ grade and
Uniforms provide students with school uniqueness. Students will stand out in field trips and other school activities feeling a sense of belonging. A bond will then form and unite more students together.
