More than just the surface value
Every day people flip through magazines. Some read every page to enhance their knowledge of the surrounding world, while others are just going through looking at the ads. Many do not think twice about what is being said or expressed through the words and pictures. If people did, however, they would see the truth. We tend to base our product purchases on one simple idea: company advertisements and how they persuade us into buying their products.
All product advertisements are formatted around the idea of making sure their product is noticeable to the public and available to be purchased. Such is the case with Sarah Michaels, a bath and body company. They have multiple ads that showoff their product as being the best. They claim that their product as being the best. They claim that their product is the perfect gift for someone. Or easier said, their product is the best out there. They also believe that this merchandise will increase friendships. With thoughts on their products, Sarah Michaels believes that this is the best choice for people to buy.
The ad is not just a picture or a word that says, “this is the best, buy this.” It is actually made up of different types of evidence. One type of evidence of this is the visual details of the ad itself, minus the product. The first thing people would notice is that the whole ad is in black and white, except for the product. Using this style of advertisement is very creative because it makes the gift stand out ten times more than if the entirety of the ad was in color. It was wintertime, most likely around Christmas, because there is a door in the background that has a Christmas bow on it. The ad was also placed in the November issue of Glamour. The product consists of multiple bath and body lotions, body wash, shower gel, and bath sponges in the gift box. They are all on display together in a very well-presented fashion. The bright colors are very eye-catching. There is also a little picture frame in the box that has a picture of the two girls in the ad in it. This puts a very strong emotional grasp on the reader because it may make them recall their friends.
Another detail of the ad is the two teenage girls sitting on a bench.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Pi’s journey starts out in a town in India known as Pondicherry. Here he finds a great interest in both Zoology( the study of animals), and religion. Pi also as well shows much knowledge in Zoology as shown in this quote from the book. “I got every possible student award from the department of Zoology.” (Pg.6) Pi, relating to religion(his other great interest), believes in multiple religions of which include Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Companies that sell products are always trying to find new and interesting ways to get buyers and get people’s attention. It has become a part of our society today to always have products being shown to them. As claimed in Elizabeth Thoman’s essay Rise of the Image Culture: Re-Imagining the American Dream, “…advertising offered instructions on how to dress, how to behave, how to appear to others in order to gain approval and avoid rejection”. This statement is true because most of the time buyers are persuaded by ads for certain products.
Religion has a profound affect and important place in both stories, shaping the characters and the tone. Pi sees something greater than himself in Richard Parker, something endlessly beautiful and complex. Richard Parker symbolizes God to Pi. His features are amazing but he sees things in his stare that are parallels to his three religions, Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. It was “... intense, cold and unflinching, not flighty or friendly, and spoke of self-possession on the point of exploding with rage” (Martel 152). Finally, the ad makes use of various rhetorical devices. The ad lists the advantages for the beauty from the inside out. In this ad the art of persuasion is very strong. The sparkling faces give energy and firm determination of getting something out of it, generating a strong belief of benefiting from this dietary supplement. In the ad, the picture with three females illustrates the feeling of happiness and confidence on their faces, which attracts others audiences as well as promoting the emotionally pleasant
At a very young age, Pi Patel, the main character in Martel’s novel, Life of Pi was introduced to religion. Unlike the typical child, Pi had experiences in his life that made him believe in certain religions. By the time he was a teenager he practiced Christianity, Islamic, and Hinduism faith and had no doubt that was what he was meant to be doing. He began to be judged by practicing three religions at once. An example of this is when his father would say that it was just as bad to dabble in multiple religions than to not believe in any. Both his father and the religious leaders agreed Pi needed to be faithful to one in order to be accepted. This is not what Pi wanted, and ultimately stayed true to the morals he had that all religion was true. He continued following those religions against his surrounding judgments and that was the first “test of faith” “that Martel focuses on throughout the book. Piscine Molitor Patel is the main character of the story Life of Pi, known to as the nickname Pi. Mathematically, Pi is also a term referring to the series of endless numbers that is used to measure the circumference of a circle. People commonly used the number “3.14…” or the fraction “22/7” as Pi. Yann Martel had cleverly woven these numbers in between the stories. Throughout the novel, Pi had stated: “I survived 227 days. That’s how long my trial lasted, over seven months” (Martel 189). The 227 days that Pi Patel had survived symbolize the fraction “22/7” from the number Pi. A common communication strategy is for companies to break through competitive clutter in order to shape consumers attitude and intentions.
