Failure is often attributed to an overwhelming challenge. Individuals often blame their circumstances for their inability to achieve their goals. But contrary to popular belief, challenges and adversity are the necessary soil for the growth of success. By presenting both adversity and successes, the texts Breaking Night by Liz Murray, and Balotelli by Luca Caioli present the notion that great adversity can be the breeding ground for successful individuals. From the very beginning, both Liz Murray and Mario Balotelli had faced constant adversity. Murray had been born to poor, drug-addicted parents living in the Bronx. She recalled that as a child, “We never had any food in the house, Everything was filthy and the drugs were everywhere,” (thefreelibrary.com) …show more content…
After her mother's death, Liz would decide to pull her life back on track. She attempted and successfully completed 4 years worth of school in the span of two years. On top of her tremendous school load, Liz was also homeless and went door-to-door for environmental fundraising efforts. (poststar.com) “It kept me in enough turkey sandwiches to be alive,” she shared. (poststar.com) Mario also faced vivid challenges throughout his childhood and career. As a young child, complications with Mario’s intestines left hospital bills his family wasn’t certain they could afford. In fear for Mario’s survival, they gave him up for foster care, an act scarring Mario forever. “If I didn’t become Mario Balotelli then Mr. and Mrs. Barwuah would not have cared about me for anything... [they] had abandoned... [me] in a hospital” (Dailymail.co.uk) The rejection from his family would draw him away from his birth family, but Mario would still face the challenges and discrimination of an immigrant. In an important match against Roma, the Roma supporters could be heard at numerous points throughout the game producing monkey noises directed at Mario. Liz was able to attain university funds in the form of a scholarship she won from the New York Times (). This was a large, and prestigious scholarship, which would grant Liz the ability to go to Harvard. She would go on to win several awards such as an Honorary doctorate of public service, Oprah Winfrey’s Chutzpah Award, and even had a movie based on her life. Likewise, Mario Balotelli earned his place as the high scorer for Italy in the UEFA European Championships (), making him one of the greatest soccer players to ever emerge from the Country. Additionally, Mario would also receive a bronze medal at the confederations cup, and several wins to his
We find out that Marcela and her little brother were raised in poverty by a Mexican woman named Macaria, who was a prostitute looking for a way out of the world’s oldest profession. The children lived on the streets while their mother solicited Johns for a living. This was how Marcela, as a young girl, met Tony; she was sitting on the stoops of the barrio with her little brother who was malnourished and eventually died.
After reading Failure is Not an Option by Nathan Wallace, we ponder whether failure is beneficial or not. However, after reading the passage, we stumble upon a quote where Wallace says “Failure is always an option. Failure can lead to great learning and progress when a specific failure is analyzed through the lens of a growth mindset.”
"The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure" - Sven Goran Eriksson. Success is an achievement in life which most people would be appreciative towards, but failure is looked upon in a disgraceful manner. People in society tend to face many challenges that occur in their daily lives. Some of these challenges can affect their lives dramatically in a positive or negative way. If one decides not to surmount their challenges they will suffer within themselves for a long period of time. Having confidence within is considered the greatest way to overcome suffering in life. In the novel, The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx, Quoyle deals with many difficult challenges along his life journey by suffering from bad childhood experiences which led him to have a low self confidence, which later on affected him in adulthood as well. All of Quoyle?s life decisions at first were base on him listening to others and continuing life suffering through it day by day but afterwards in the novel near the end, he experiences happiness for the first time. If someone is unable to overcome their bad experiences and fears in the past then they cannot be successful in the future. Also, a person should be strong and have faith in themselves to overcome their fears to fain the joy and happiness in their life. The modern day hero is distinguished as a hero with both successes and failures. A hero?s successes are determined by the hero?s power within themselves to overcome fears and obstacles and failures are determined by the hero?s weak point or flaw which leads to their predicted downfall and portrays them as an atypical hero. A hero can be depicted as an atypical hero at first but can still gain the success and happiness they longed for in the end.
The book Night is about the holocaust as experienced by Elie Weisel from inside the concentration camps. During World War II millions of innocent Jews were taken from their homes to concentration camps, resulting in the deaths of 6 million people. There were many methods of survival for the prisoners of the holocaust during World War II. In the book Night, there were three main modes of survival, faith, family, and food. From the examples in the book Night, faith proved to be the most successful in helping people survive the holocaust.
Family and Adversity It is almost unimaginable the difficulties victims of the holocaust faced in concentration camps. For starters they were abducted from their homes and shipped to concentration camps in tightly packed cattle cars. Once they made it to a camp, a selection process occurred. The males were separated from the females.
Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
Once, a wise soul has spoken, “Sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to become successful”. Adversity means having troubles and difficulties. It’s what you need to persevere through in order to do something you’ve wanted to do for a long time. If you want to pass that test, you’ve gotta conquer your fears and fight through all the troubles that arrive in front of you. Become your own hero. Adversity is a situation that took place in the novel “The Outsiders”, by S.E. Hinton.
When individuals face obstacles in life, there is often two ways to respond to those hardships: some people choose to escape from the reality and live in an illusive world. Others choose to fight against the adversities and find a solution to solve the problems. These two ways may lead the individuals to a whole new perception. Those people who decide to escape may find themselves trapped into a worse or even disastrous situation and eventually lose all of their perceptions and hops to the world, and those who choose to fight against the obstacles may find themselves a good solution to the tragic world and turn their hopelessness into hopes. Margaret Laurence in her short story Horses of the Night discusses the idea of how individual’s responses
She would mostly be alone and sit by herself being buried in books or watching cartoons. In high school she attended a program for troubled adolescents and from there she received a wide range of support from helping her get braces to helping her get information to attend community college. (59) Even with this she was already too emotionally unstable due to her family issues and felt like she couldn’t go through with her dreams to travel and even go into the art of culinary. She suffers from psychological problems such as depression and worries constantly about almost every aspect in her life from work to family to her boyfriend and just hopes that her life won’t go downhill. (60) Overall Kayla’s family structure shows how different is it now from it was in the 1950’s as divorce rates have risen and while before Kayla’s type of family structure was rare now it is becoming more common. This story helps illustrate the contributions of stress that children possess growing up in difficult homes in which they can’t put their own futures first they must, in some cases, take care of their guardian’s futures first or others around them. Again, this adds into the inequality that many face when it comes to being able to climb up the ladder and become successful regardless of where one
Alcoholism is a debilitating disease that affects an entire family. Alcoholism can cause physical and chemical changes in the diseased person, which in turn can lead to poor life choices. Jeannette's father was an alcoholic. While growing up in poverty, Jeannette's father made decisions that caused the family to suffer greatly. When Jeannette was a young child, Rex's alcoholism was better controlled. Jeannette's father could hold a job for months at a time and provide for his family the basic needs, such as food, required to survive. At one point it their lives, all the kids “lived the high life” when Rex brought home new bicycles for them. However, as Jeannette grew older, her father's disease took control of his life. Soon Jeannette's father began to lose his jobs more often, until he finally refused to maintain a job in any sense. Due to the lack of income, the family suffered greatly financially and emotionally. Jeannette and Brian were forced to eat out of garbage cans at school to combat their...
Marcus’s family is poor. His mother is a single parent. She is working long hours as a seamstress to provide for Marcus and her daughter, Sabrina, after her husband left the family. They live in a public housing estate referred to as the projects. Eddie has two parents that are both in jobs. They have a better economy than Marcus’s family, but Eddie doesn’t get as much money as he’d like to. They live in a private house in the same area of Queens as Marcus lives in. It is the beginning of the final term in high school, and parties and trips are coming up. The boys have saved up money to cover the expenses for a long time. But then, Nike comes out with a brand new pair of shoes in the basketball team’s colors, maroon and powder blue. Everyone on the team is getting a pair, and everyone will notice if the stars of the team haven’t got them as well. The boys consider themselves as too good for jobs, so th...
...ing another baby to be her donor. That’s Belkin says: “It is human nature to do everything to save a life and just as human to agonize over everything we do” (Belkin 2). She emphasizes the fact that we aspire to live and also are afraid of death that’s why we take risk. This connects to Slater’s essay because in her essay Mario that has tried 40 different methods to cure himself and failed still doesn’t give up. He is a perfect example since he voluntary agrees to try the neural implants surgery to see if he gets better. He would try anything even though there might be a possibility he won’t survive to see his daughter be born: “And so Mario became one of the first American psychiatric patient to undergo this highly experimental procedure” (Slater 234). Mario knows that this procedure would be experimental but he is willing to try anything since it’s his last hope.
Throughout life many people face difficulties. Depending on the person’s strength some will get through tough times, but some will fail to overcome them. Two books where characters have to face many challenges include: Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Book Thief. These two stories deal with people overcoming the difficulties faced throughout everyday life. Some difficulties include racism, religious discrimination, and dealing with others’ cruelness or kindness. Examples from these books prove that the characters have challenges throughout the stories to overcome. In the face of adversity what causes some individuals to fail while others prevail?
Her hospitality was her passion as customers, family, and friends were drawn to her engaging personality and resourcefulness. She and her late husband Mario Improta, who met while working at Machlett Laboratories (which went on to become Raytheon) in Stamford in the 50’s, combined their desire to build something on their own and bought the Dairy Queen in Westport in the 70’s. It was a brave move they took to support their family of five. They went on to buy and run Mr. Deli in Darien in the 80’s and after that worked side by side at Critic's Choice in Stamford. Gloria never shied away from hard work and ways to expand her skills from computer training at IBM to certification as a nurse’s aid, graduating top of her class.
In conclusion, to the above points, anyone is capable of triumphing over adversity. No matter how hard the circumstances are, each individual is able to. Unfortunately for some, they lack the need to triumph and in the end fail to beat adversity. Passion and commitment is all it takes to knock down those barriers and succeed in life. “Become the person you have always dreamt of being”.
