The first characteristic of Exploration Literature is that it was written by explorers and navigators. These are not professional writers. This connects to John Smith because he was an explorer who was given a charter by The Virginia Company to go to Jamestown. Smith’s claim that “whilst the ships stayed” they had a better chance of survival alludes to the fact that they were new to the land (83). Also, the chapter title What Happed Till the First Supply helps support the idea that they were explorers and inexperienced with the environment. The next characteristic is that the work is written to a specific

People from all around the world travel to the U.S. only to experience the great American national parks. According to the NPS 2015 Annual Visitation Summary Report, a total of 480,307,933 people visited national parks in the United States during 2015 both for recreational and non-recreational purposes. Ecotourism, an economic model that combines tourism with commerce, contributes to the maintenance of national parks and allows isolated small towns surrounding national parks to thrive. According to Frye and Nuest, in addition to the views, “these wonders of the Earth provide ample opportunities for visitors to hike, bicycle, climb, swim, horseback ride, and paddle” (PAGE NUMBER). Such activities contribute to the visitors’ experience and have resulted in great customer satisfaction (Roemer and Vasek 46). All of these activities, along with other further services such as lodging and dining, create income for national parks and local businesses, as well, as more employment opportunities for the people, working for both local business and at the national parks. When having an adventure in mind, an individual also has factors that go along with the quest. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey and Kira Salak’s travel memoir, The Cruelest Journey, readers learn that people take on quests for various reasons. Homer’s writing revolves around a protagonist Odysseus, who goes on a 10 year voyage back to his home in Ithaca. The phrase ecotourism seems to be on the lips of many travel agents and corporations looking for new ideas in executive or "yuppie" getaways. But many "civilians" are wondering what ecotourism is and what is expected of them if they do go on a so-called ecotour. Ecotourism is defined in different ways, by different groups of people with different agendas. Many tourists are attracted to the adventure that is associated with many remote, natural areas. Likewise, ecotourism appears to be altering the lifestyles of indigenous peoples and causing certain changes in local animal behaviors.
