According to the article, “What Is New Media?” written by Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid, new media is “a 21st century catchall term used to define all that is related to the internet and the interplay between technology, images, and sound.” New media gives society the ability to access the internet at any place in the world and at any time. There is a decent sized list of advantages new media has brought to society. First advantage is that new media is incredibly effective and efficient for business. In the article, “Advantages of New Media vs Traditional Media Marketing” Eduardo Esparza describes new media as “inbound marketing” which includes, “videos, podcasts, social media, product reviews, message boards, and blog posts.” Esparza also says that customers are beginning to “reject traditional or outbond marketing.” Companies can efficiently use new media for the marketing aspect of their business. In the article, “The Decline of Traditional Media” written by Anna Heim, she talks about the how many journalists have lost their jobs because print media is becoming unpopular. She says in three years from 2007 to 2010, then 13,500 journalists lost their jobs because they were not needed to write in an actual newspaper anymore. Forty-one percent of society prefers to read a newspaper online while thirty-one percent read from print newspapers. This number will become significantly more as the “newspaper generation” slowly goes away. This is just the start of the “New Media generation”. This generation is a multitasking generation. Through the hard work of multiple inventors the media was able to reach where it is today. According to Merriam Webster, it a “form of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content.” “While the Internet has always allowed individuals to participate in media not only as consumers but also as producers, the social aspect of media did not flourish until the 2000s (Media Convergence).” Social media is perceived negatively primarily through the eyes of older generations simply because they did not have the advanced technology we do in this day and age. Now instead of texting, every single social media application has some sort of texting on there to text your friends or even try to let famous/popular people respond to you. Thirty years ago, if I told you that the primary means of communicating and disseminating information would be a series of interconnected computer networks you would of thought I was watching Star Trek or reading a science fiction novel. In 2010, the future of mass media is upon us today; the Internet. The Internet is and will only grow in the future as the primary means of delivering news, information and entertainment to the vast majority of Americans. Mass media as we know it today will take new shape and form in the next few years with the convergence and migration of three legacy mediums (Television, Radio, Newspaper) into one that is based on the Internet and will replace these mediums forever changing the face of journalism, media and politics. Moreover, change in technology has brought advancement to transportation methods, which makes it very easy and fast to go long distances than before.
