If you ask me the meaning of thick-skinned, the first thing that comes to mind is anything strong. For example, a rhinoceros. They tend to have thick-skin which protects them from other predators. This is one of the advantages they have from other animals. It is the same with people we have our own thick-skin. It might not be physical like a rhinoceros, but emotionally we have our own way to protect ourselves in any harm’s way. Having thick-skin allows one to avert, protect and endure life challenges. Thick-skinned means learning to control your emotions. When a stranger tells you: you do not belong; why are you even here; just go back to where you came from; you are ruining everything; you are just a naïve, clueless girl; I wish you were …show more content…
I remember when I was little, seeing my cousin work nonstop to make a living. To be able to bring something to the table for my brothers and me. To be able to buy the pair of shoes I longed for. To be able to buy us snacks when we were hungry. To be able to live the life that many kids our age did. To be able buy us medicine when hurt. To be able to put a smile on our faces. He did all this, despite the difficult life we had. Despite all the criticism he got from people for raising three kids. Despite hearing them say, “you are better off without them and why not just give them back to their parents?” Despite not having to enjoy his own life as long as my brothers and me were happy. But in spite of everything, he was able to endure it. He showed people that he could do it. That their opinions did not matter to him. That he was stronger than they think he was. Life might have been hard for him, but he never lost hope. Life clearly is a roller coaster. There are ups and downs, but life does not have to be like that every time. We all probably know this, but nothing is free in this world. If we want something, then we are going to have to work for it. I have been through so much in life, but one thing that keeps me going is the thought that if I am not strong now, then when can I

Matter of fact, he acknowledges that it is not only a specific group, but everyone - including his own race - that feels uneasy, even when they have no prior knowledge about his personality. This demonstrates how deep the roots of racial bias reach because it is to the point where even those facing the same issues are rejecting him. They do this not because they are afraid of him specifically, but rather because the idea of being in danger has been repeatedly enforced in their minds, to the point where they too see themselves as dangerous. This highlights the negative influence of society’s view on self-worth, because their personal perspective doesn’t necessarily reflect the truth.
There are many miraculous people on this planet. Some of these people have had miraculous experiences, others have accomplished miraculous success, and some people remind us of how miraculous our lives really are. Every now and then someone comes along who shows us that miracles really are possible. That was what a mentally handicapped African American boy from Anderson, South Carolina was put on this Earth to do.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
Bravery is simply finding faith in oneself, accepting risks and danger, and facing fear when no one else will.
The definition of bravery in the Standard College Dictionary Canadian Edition is, "the quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or opposition with fearlessness, calmness, and firmness." Bravery is a quality that is shown by many of the characters in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The characters are brave in their effort to protect physical well-being, personal values, their reputation and sanity. In the novel the characters exhibit genuine bravery in order to guard the things important to them.

Boldness lives within everyone, yet it is up to each individual to harness this power. Some choose to use it while others do not. Boldness is the ability of not hesitating to break the rules of propriety. Forbes Magazine says, "These are times that call for bold, confident, courageous, leadership." Where do we better see these qualities than in character Beowulf, in the land of Herot; or in the house of Paul, when teaching about God and Jesus was frowned upon. Today it is up to the average individual to show boldness in the face of terror.
Everyone has trials and tribulations in life , and everyone has obstacles to overcome. What I have learned and reflected from journey is that, I am a better person because of what I have been through. If you take the easy road through life, you will never become strong minded or dedicated to anything. And in the end, when his peers would not even comfort him, he continued to do what he could to help the people. It would have different if he hadn't known that he would have to die. But he did, and still chose to go. Even when death was upon him, he worked tirelessly until he no longer had the strength. To me, that is amazing.
Try to envision being born without any hands or feet, arms or legs and given no warning or medical reason or explanation for having that congental anomaly. Now picture how you would live if you could not walk, do daily tasks, such as feeding yourself, brushing your teeth, going to the bathroom on your own, or writing, etc. I am sure you could only imagine the countless number of obstacles and challenges Nick faced just with things like life skills on a daily basis. However, Nick has overcome what most people would say is absolutely impossible, and he is now traveling world wide sharing his testimony, and he gives God all of the credit for his strength to do this.
In the end in order to achieve success within an individual's life, and become the person one would like to be, you have to go through tough times to become a tough person. Nobody wants to go through pain but in the end that is what defines a person and shapes who they are. An individual can only learn how to grow and flourish through life once they have been faced with hardships that they have defeated.

It’s hard to imagine all the events that led up to ourselves coming into the world or at least it is hard to some people. When I think about all my ancestors that had to survive all the things I read about in textbooks it’s a miracle we are all here. Trying to learn about all the people in my family’s tree was interesting to know how my ancestors came about, what they did, and how long they lived. I learned mostly about my mother’s side of the family who have lived and flourished in andrews, texas where I am from. I haven’t done anything great yet but I am hoping when my grandchildren have to write about me they have something awesome to write about and will think I did something good with my life.
