The grading system is designed to commend students for getting good grades and shun students for receiving bad ones. This is done to give students an incentive to learn the material, because if there were no reasons to get good grades, then students would not try at all. It is not only beneficial for students to get good grades because of the praise; but, because they will inevitably need to learn the material if they want to get good grades. The school board should keep the policies they have in place and students should really strive to earn good marks.
Students in today’s day and age genuinely want to learn the material they are being taught. They understand that if they learn the concepts that it will not only help them live a successful

If their child is performing poorly, they should be informed about the problem. Equally important, if their child is excelling in their school work, they should also know about this. Without a proper grading system, this would not be possible. The grading system is designed in a manner that the better an individual does on a specific assignment, the higher a grade the student will receive. A problem that arises is when students are solely focused on receiving a good grade. If they don’t have any other extra goals in addition to a good grade, the student is most likely to cheat ("Students Cheat for Good Grades. Why Not Make the Classroom about Learning and Not Testing?"). This may be an …show more content…
If the pupil is earning good grades on all of their assignments, not only will he/she be getting a good grade in the class, but they will understand the concepts exceptionally well. On the other hand, a student would not understand the concepts thoroughly if they are cheating and receiving extra help throughout the course. “In most cases, grades (rather than education and learning) have become the major focus of many Central students. “Grades nowadays don’t reflect what students get out of the class,” Sophomore Mehow Podstawski said. ‘I could understand a class completely and get a B, while a girl who sits right next to me can just do whatever she needs to do and get an A, and not understand anything about what’s going on’” (Hau, “Story of the Week: Academic Pressures Lead to Increase in Cheating."). Like the girl in this example that was doing whatever it took to get the “A”, a student who cheats will never get what they are supposed to out of a specific class. You are only hurting yourself if you cheat because you will not learn the material as well as was
In “What is a Grade” by Pat Belanoff, she explains the pros and cons of the grading system. In Pats ' essay she states “Perhaps the solution would to abandon grading altogether in writing class. I confess that this a solution that appeals to me greatly.” (151). Grades should not be present in the way we test students’ learning ability. School seems to be more about learning the material for a brief moment just to get a good grade rather then to actually learn and think about the information being presented.
Colleges in America grade students academically for successful careers. For years students grades were calculate by an alphabetic/numeric grade scale. Today colleges are questioning whether grades should be determined by continuing to use a grade scale or switch to a pass/fail scale. Although, there were numerous of factors both positive and negative about a pass/fail system to take into consideration before making a decision. I feel that colleges in America should continue to use a grade scale to convey to students that grades have consequences, open doors to opportunity, and alleviates perturbation.
Intelligence has begun to define individuals globally, but the goal of the minimum grading system is fairness and equality. Fair share grading is when all students in the class take an intended exam, but the class average score of the test is given to every student. Each student will receive the same grade even if one did better or worse than the average score. That being said it could reduce dropout rates, test anxiety, and competition between students. On the other hand, students could be affected negatively because it could lead to false self-value and unfairness to those students who study harder in order to earn higher grades. The debate continues about whether students should be separated by intelligence or be given equal grades in order
One argument in favor of peer grading is that it offers a student feedback on minor lessons, and it allows teachers to focus on curriculum, creativity, and grading major tests and papers (Grading). However, some psychologists view the practice of grading work in class as potentially damaging to students' self-esteem. Some students may be teased for getting good grades, or those who struggle in class work may also be ridiculed (Grading). Regardless of the grading practice, students are going to be teased by their peers. ...
Before we can look at how grading affects learning Farber suggests we look at how it has affected students (333-334). The greatest effect of being graded happens to the individual. Farber asks, “Did you need grades to learn how to drive?” We have become “grade junkies.” Without the grades students can’t learn (333). Vogel agrees that students believe grades are the motivating factor in learning, but only for the money. Students want the grades because high GPA’s equal high paying jobs (338-339). Another negative effect of grades is that students want the best grade with the least amount of learning but this causes conflict with professors because the professor’s goal is different compared to the student’s (339). Grades have positive effects too. Farber believes that grades give us discipline, but not self-discipline. True self-discipline comes from wanting something not coercion (334). Farber defines self-discipline as revising one paragraph all night because one enjoys it (334.)
Situations of cheating have seemed to become more and more commonplace when the student is bored by the subject material, poor teaching and or feels they have no use for the knowledge. Kohn even states in his article, “cheating is more common when students experience the academic tasks they’ve been given as boring, irrelevant, or overwhelming.” This infers that if a student were attending a school interested in learning about art, the student maybe more inclined to cheat in a business accounting class due to the fact the student would find the subject material irrelevant to them and their future. Students seem to be less inclined to cheat and it “is relatively rare in classrooms where the learning is genuinely engaging and meaningful to students and where a commitment to exploring significant ideas hasn’t been eclipsed by a single-minded emphasis on “rigor”” (Kohn). To simplify everything mentioned above; students are inclined to cheat in school when they are disinterested in the subject material and or are overwhelmed by in assignment or finally the result in a poor teacher. Everyone who has attended school can relate to this in some way or another, most people do not want to retain knowledge they have no interest in or use for in their
How does the grading system and learning go together? What makes learning something gradable? How can the grading system determines a child 's knowledge based on a test alone? These questions have popped up in educators ' minds for years. These are the thoughts that motivated people like Liz Mandrell, Jerry Farber and Steven Vogel rectify the grading system in their own views. These authors give valid reasons for understanding why students are affected by the grading system.
In conclusion, I believe that the grade system is important to the success of the students so can know where they stand in a course as far as grades are concern, and they are able to motivate themselves to light their grades up higher than before as well as the Instructors can see where students need help and they can play an important role in a students career as far as them knowing what areas they need assisting in so they might succeed.
...ble to over come such a habit will undoubtedly give you greater control over your life. In the end cheating gets you nowhere and just lowers you ability to perform at a higher level.
Education is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of any human society. Without it human beings could not have been at the current point of time where we all know tremendously about life and the universe. We are now better off than we were. However, it is clear that there is still huge variety of phenomena waiting for our discovery. The most important objective of education is to help human beings pursue their burning desires to learn and reach their potential. In that way we progress. Therefore, it is vital to help or at least not hinder education to fulfill its goals.
In “Stop Giving In To Higher Grades: Ten suggestions On How to Fight Grade Inflation,” the author Kevin C. Costley explains why grade inflation should be strictly decreased and how faculties should act to actually reduce it through providing a good number of citations and his own solutions. Nowadays, not only students and parents but even principals expect higher grade and this kind of problem extensively prevails in the United States. Universities also acknowledge that if the students get poor grades, they will transfer to another institute that retains a more generous grading standard, which eventually leads to imposing pressure on professors. If the students’ grades are inflated, they will not receive the chance to
One change institutions should make to the grading system is to eliminate all factors that have noting to do with learning outcomes from affecting the students’ grade. According to the article, “Assessment of Learning Outcomes: What’s the difference?” written by Carnegie Mellon University, grades are often based on more than learning outcomes. Instructors usually include factors unrelated to learning outcomes such as attendance to class, participation, improvement and in some cases, grades are boosted a bit due to how hard the student is working.” These factors are
Grading System Reform Teachers have always used grades to measure the amount a student has learned. This practice is becoming ineffective. Many students have a wide range of grades, which shows that grades may not show what a student really knows. Therefore, the standard grading system should be replaced. Some reasons why grades should be replaced are bad grades can hinder a child’s performance, grades define who a student is in the classroom, and grades are not an effective way to see if students have learned the material.
Students need to be inspired to think critically. By this they comprehend what has been learned and be able to use it. I hope my students will be able to achieve their greatest potential that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. We can give our children these building blocks thru education to use in decision making situations, moral value of their thoughts and actions. This will guide them to realize how their actions and decisions will affect themselves and others.
