Though there are some downsides to starting school later, for example school sports that start at two, High Schools should push back the start time to 8:30. Pushing back the start time of school just one hour benefits everyone, not just the students. If schools were to push the start time back to 8:30, if a kid without his license missed the bus, most parents wouldn’t be able to drive them to school and still make it to work on time. For teenagers, pushing back the school start time may lead to more responsibility in the morning, as most parents will have to leave for work before school starts. This means teenagers will have to get up and get ready on their own and make sure they leave on time to be at school before the start …show more content…
Many school districts use the same buses for the high school, middle school and elementary school. Bus drivers usually start out picking up the High schoolers and then after they drop them off, they go and pick up the elementary school kids. Delayed school start times would certainly affect this schedule. The school system has two options. Option one is delay the elementary start time until 9:30, and option two is invest in enough bus drivers so they can have enough to transport all the students of all three schools at the same time. In conclusion, schools should push the start time back to 8:30 due to the reasons that it would help students academically and mentally. Although it might cause a little problems here and there, there are more benefits than downfalls by pushing the starting time of school back to
Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
There is multiple facts and reasons to have later start times help students get through the school day. BY helping students get better grades, test scores, and overall better. And teens these days aren't getting the sleep they need to wake up early and go to school. SO that is why school should have later start times. IF schools started later we wouldn't have all these tired and groggy students coming to school we would have students that are refreshed and ready to learn. We will have students that have good grades. We will have students who have better test scores. And we will have students with overall better performance.I what you right now pick up your phone and call your district and say we want later start
The alarm beeps again sounding like a fire alarm going off. School starts before 8am. Using your fingers to hold open your eyes and dragging your feet, you get in the car and drive yourself to school. Will you even be able to make it through your day? School days for teens start to early. Teens aren't getting the sleep recommended for a healthy start to their day. Later start times for middle and high schools are proven to benefit both students and teachers.
The first reason why school should start later is because teens need sleep. Most teens don’t or can’t go to sleep to get the needed amount of sleep, so they are more rushed in the morning and stressed throughout the day. According to the national sleep foundation, “59% of sixth graders and 87% of high schoolers aren’t getting the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night. If school started later, they could get the sleep they need and they wouldn’t be as stressed or tired.
With delaying the schools start time, comes tardiness. Kids wouldn’t be tardy and wouldn’t be tired. A school that moved the starting time to 9:00 reported a 66% drop in tardiness. 70% of the kids from that school improved on their grades, and showed significant improvements. Later start times also reduced truancy in schools and dropout rates. 64% of teenagers that sleep in class
The schools that start classes before 8:00AM, the students are not getting enough sleep at night. In the passage Up For Debate: Should School Start Later It states “Many adolescents suffer from chronic sleep deprivation.” We need the schools to fix this by allowing students to get more sleep by changing the time school starts, to a more reasonable time. Therefore letting the students get the sleep they need to work exceptionally at school. Starting the school day later will also help with the amount of money the school pays for. Starting later would be most beneficial for schools around the world.

That is just one of the many good reasons. that the start time of school should be later in the day. Some people may say that the brain is not fully functional until 9:30 is just a matter of opinion.
When it comes to middle and high schools, they tend to start early, not generally knowing why the kids are tired. Only 15% of schools in America start at 8:30 or later, and it’s affecting schools across the country. Early school start times plague the students with low grades, sleep deprivation, and lower social skills. A solution to all of those factors would be to make the school start time later than 8:00. Middle school start times should be later because grades would be better, more time to wake up, and better social skills. They can’t just make a kid wake up and learn when they want to be asleep!
If the start time of schools is pushed back, then the end time of school would likely be pushed back in order to make up for lost class time. If the end time of school is pushed back, then after school activities would need to be pushed back as well, leaving teenagers getting to their homes later in the evening which would to lead them going to sleep later. This argument undeniably valid, and there is no easy way around it. In order to not lose academic time, a compromise must be implemented. The start times of schools must be pushed back in order to allow teens to live healthy lifestyles, but the end time of schools does not have to be. Instead of pushing the whole day back an hour or two to compensate for losing the first hour or two, just push the start time back. This may seem counterintuitive because it would lead to schools losing class time. To make up for the lost time, schools should extend their year. Schools should add on an extra week or so, depending on how much school time was lost to the later start time, so that no class time would actually be lost. This compromise allows for better mental health of students as well as increased safety on the roads. It also allows teenagers to participate in all of their extracurricular activities while still getting all of their
Schools should start later because it’ll lead to better grades and better attitudes. When teens don’t have enough sleep some teens might start to do drugs and alcohol. Sleep is very important to all ages. Some teens have uneven sleep orders, because some may stay up late and get up late on the weekends and that may cause them to be off schedule during the week(Lewis). Even though later start time would lead kids missing end of the day classes to attend sporting events, school should start later because kids need more sleep and reduces car crashes and uses in alcohol and drugs.
“These experts have long said that expecting teens to show up to class before 8 a.m. is not good for their health or their report cards” (Associated Press). Schools are starting to start school later for many reasons but the important ones are it’s not good for teen health and grades it affects their grades a lot. Changing the start time of school would improve student attendance. According to the Scholarly Community Encyclopedia, a test in 2014 showed that attendance was greatly improved when school was changed to start at 8:30 or later. This would give kids more time to fully wake up and get ready. It would also help with tardies in the mornings. This would benefit both students and the overall school
Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
In “Later High School Start Times a Challenge for Districts” it states, “Many school districts use the same buses to transport elementary, middle and high school students. A change in start time at the high school level thus usually means a change in start time at elementary and middle schools, too.”. If schools were to start later they would have to replan their entire bussing schedules and routes. It would also be difficult for driving students to make it to school on time with all of the traffic. Parents will be heading to work around the same time as their children are heading to school causing twice as much traffic later in the morning.
