Theoretical Background
In the southern African region, the need for reliable and inexpensive cooking apparatuses is growing at a rapid rate, especially in the many rural and underdeveloped areas. Solar cookers have been in use for a number of years, and they play a major role in the lives of the people who use them. Previous research that has been conducted by bodies such as the South African Department of Minerals and Energy and Solar Cooking International, on the efficacy and environmental impact of solar cookers will be further explored. The possible advantages and drawbacks of these cookers will be discussed as well the various types that have so far made their way into the market and their relevance to southern Africa.
Solar cookers represent an eco-friendly form of cooking, and they signify one of the most fundamental methods of harnessing solar energy for human use. In the southern African region, solar cookers have gradually grown in popularity over the last few decades, as they represent an efficient solution to many of the economic and fuel-related problems facing rural communities. Free solar energy can be harnessed and used as a fuel to operate solar cooking apparatuses, thereby reducing the need for other fuels such as paraffin and wood (see Tucker, 1999). These cookers play a vital role in the lives of the many families who make use of them, as they are cheap and simple to operate. They provide the users with an effective and reliable method by which to cook their meals and play a huge role in terms of money-savings for these families.
According to a comparative field test conducted by the South African Department of Minerals and Energy, clear preferences were indicated in the results, for certain cooker types, amo...

...aic panels is that it makes use of a renewable resource and thus it will continue to produce power indefinitely. Studies have shown that the demand for Photo-Voltaic panels is increasing as the cost of this technology decreases. The installation of various Photo-Voltaic panels has and will create additional job opportunities for the unemployed. Photo-Voltaic energy is sustainable and environmentally friendly. The major disadvantage of the Photo-Voltaic is that it is dependent on the presence of sun light which means that during cloudy days and at night, even though the panels may store energy during the day, there may not be an adequate supply of electricity (PEARCE, J M, 2002).
It can be evidently reasoned by the numerous advantages stated above that the photovoltaic panels is the superior scheme over the axial flow water turbines for the Kwa-Zulu Natal Coastline.
Wanting to address the everyday consumer needs of safe cooking and electricity for those live in provincial societies, Bright Light Innovations of Colorado State University have developed a new product in which their management team of Business and Engineering students’ have considered as a definite solution through their revolutionary product—called the Starlight Stove. From identifying the everyday issues that people face in third world countries, the Bright Light Innovations team then identifies Nepal as their opening target market; in hopes that the Starlight Stove can improve the quality of life and well-being for those less fortunate. To benefit the lives of Nepalese, the Starlight Stove features the unique ability to convert heat from
Three types of heat transfers help solar cookers use the sun’s energy to cook food. Heat is always transferred from the warmer object to the cooler object. Heat is also transferred to and through some materials better than others. The three types of heat transfers are radiation, conduction, and convection. Convection is the heat transfer by movement through materials such as air or a liquid. Materials like these are called mediums. Convection is the primary way heat can be transferred through liquids and gases. To classify a heat transfer as convection, hot air has to rise up to equally heat the air around it. Box solar cookers have to retain this hot air to cook food, so the cookers have to have lids with a transparent covering. The transparent covering shuts in all of the hot air and keeps out the cool air. The second heat transfer is the transfer of heat between two objects, or substances, that are directly in contact with each other. This heat transfer, called conduction is the primary way heat can be transferred through solids. In gases and liquids, conduction works poorly because the atoms have a great deal of space between them. Since they have a lot of space between each other, they can’t communicate heat to one another. The solid, aluminum foil, is commonly used in homemade solar ovens because it is a metal. It is well known metal is a great conductor of heat. Since metal (aluminum) is a great conductor of heat, whatever comes in contact with it will gradually absorb the heat from the metal. The third type of heat transfer is radiation. Radiation is the transfer of energy (heat) through space by electromagnetic waves. Solar energy reaches Earth by radiation (Pearson 485). When an energy wave comes directly in contact with...
Why solar powered lamps are needed in third world countries and why lighting of the solar powered lamp is essential as a basic necessity to life?
Preview: Today I will discuss the potential that solar power has to become this country’s main supply of energy and the latest research that can make solar power more efficient and cost effective. I will also present the environmental benefits that come with using solar power over other and more harmful forms of energy.

Themes and Lessons in the novel The Poet X In the novel The Poet X, Elizabeth Acevedo illustrates a Latina teen named Xiomara, fettered to her strict catholic household and challenging life. Throughout Xiomara’s adolescence, she conforms to her strict family standards and is forced to make decisions about her religion and identity, causing her to question her values.
The sun has been a major aspect of life since the beginning of time. People used many other forms of energy before electricity was discovered. There has been a debate over energy resources for years. Many people are worried about what current energy resources may be doing to the environment. Oil spills and nuclear power plant mishaps have only been a few accidents that have had a big impact on the environment and the people who inhabit it. There are plenty of energy sources that do not harm the environment and are still able to get the job done. Solar energy is one energy alternative that will insure the betterment of the country and, at the same time, protect the natural environment.

Solar is a viable alternative energy source with solar panels becoming more affordable and more efficiently designed.
One of the most compelling arguments for the use of renewable energy is how many forms exist of it. Nuclear power, solar power, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric power, pumped storage, wave power, geothermal power, biomass, and biogas are the most widely known renewable energy sources (Darvill, 2013). This large selection of fuels supports the idea of renewable fuels one day powering the entire planet. All the sources of energy have different niches and benefits. Solar energy is extremely ef...
Solar water heaters work by using energy from the sun. There are two types of systems for solar water heaters, an open system and a closed system (“Tapping into the Sun”). These systems depend on the type of climates they are installed in (“Tapping into the Sun”). Open systems are worth the installation if the weather is year round sunny, closed systems are better if the weather gets cold. The water cannot be run during winter so the system will be switched to fuel and in the summertime when it is warm, so the sy...
Solar energy is clean energy that does not affect our environment. Solar power utilizes the sun’s energy to produce electricity, unlike other sources of energy, which rely on continual mining for raw materials. Consequently, producing solar energy from the heat from the sun does not result into the annihilation of the ecosystem, compared to the extraction of fossil fuels (Bode, 2005). Therefore, with the use of solar energy, it will help keep the environment clean, thus help to combat the issue of global warming, which is a threat to the world’s ecosystem worldwide. The use of solar energy will help save the worlds vegetation, and help prev...
First of all, solar energy is the energy produced when the sun heats the solar panel. Thus, when the sun heats the panels, it produces electricity. Solar power produces energy during the day and can store energy for the night. Solar power does not pollute the environment. However, it has high maintenance cost, and it takes a lot of land space.
Wind and solar power are small contributing factors to South Africa’s energy supply, but over the next few years they may become big major energy contributors because we have vast open areas of solar panels and the coastal areas can get really w... ... middle of paper ... ... ica. Verster, R. pp.
The sun shines upon Earth every day, yet no one thinks much of it. Solar power’s importance, though, is above what anyone could have ever imagined. There is active solar energy, which is when solar power is converted into light, heat, cause air-movement for ventilation or cooling, or store heat for future use. Less thought of, the other type of solar energy is passive energy, which most take for granted. Solar power provides life with heat, light, and now, electricity. Solar power also plays a role in 4 of the 5 areas of green technology: energy, green building, environmentally preferred purchasing, and green chemistry. All in all, solar power is quite a unique form of energy.
