When the majority of people see a pitcher on the mound, they think the pitcher is no different than any other pitcher. People are often shocked to find out that there are many ways to distinguish one pitcher from another. Although there are many similarities in every pitcher, there are also many differences when distinguishing between starting, relieving, and closing pitchers.
A pitcher is important to how long the score remains the same. There are pitchers that start the game and lead their team defensively for four to six innings, known as the starting pitcher. The starter begins the game because of their ability to give the defense an early advantage. A starting pitcher gives their defense this early advantage because of their control, endurance,

and mental strength. Because of these three characteristics a starting pitcher has the ability to pitch more innings than any other type of pitcher. A starter must have more command over each pitch compared to any other pitcher. Throwing strikes with each pitch early in the game keeps each batter unaware of what pitch will come next. While the batter knows that the pitch being thrown will be a strike, they are clueless as to what type of pitch it will be. Because the starting pitcher is able to maintain their energy behind every pitch, it allows them to stay in the game longer. However, the longer they are in the game the more chances there are for error. Because the starter throws more innings than any other pitcher they also face more challenges. Mental strength is necessary to face these challenges. They must be able to refocus after allowing runs to score, errors are made, or once they begin to get tired. When a starting pitcher is unable to continue pitching because of the inability to do their job, a new pitcher enters the game. It is critical that once the starter exits the game that the energy, score and tempo of the game remains the same. The pitcher responsible for this is referred to as the reliever. A relieving pitcher must be ready to enter the game at any moment and keep the game at the same pace the starter left it. A reliever enters the game with expectations of pitching two to three innings; however, that is not always the case. For example, if the starting pitcher does not start the game and keep it competitive defensively the reliever will enter the game sooner. A reliever’s amount of innings is also determined by how well they are performing. If a reliever is throwing strikes and keeping the game competitive he will be allowed to throw more innings. Because a reliever can come into the game at any point in the game their control is important. Unlike a starter, a reliever must only have control of two of their pitches. The reliever should be able to throw a fastball and a breaking ball for a strike no matter the circumstance. When a reliever can control these two pitches, it gives them an advantage over the batter. A reliever manipulates the batter by throwing a pitch opposite of what the batter expects. Because a reliever only has full command of two pitches, the batter quickly adjust to how the pitcher faces each at bat. When a batter starts to catch on to the reliever’s routine, a new pitcher is brought in to finish the remainder of the game. Although there is a new pitcher entering the game, the pitcher is still expected to pitch with the same momentum that the reliever left with.
A pitcher that is brought into the game with one to two innings remaining is known as the closer. A closing pitcher might not be expected to pitch as many innings as the others, but their job is arguably the most important. The closer is expected to throw, at the most two innings, without allowing the opposing team to score. Because of the limited amount of time left in the game, if the closing pitcher allows the team to score it could result in their team losing the game. To ensure that a closer is able to do everything possible to keep the score the same means that they must have control over their pitches. A closing pitcher is similar to a starter and reliever when considering the number of pitches that they are able to throw. In contrast, a closing pitcher is not as consistent compared to the pitchers before them. A closing pitcher will only have full control of the fastball, but sometimes this pitch is the only one that is needed. When a closing pitcher is in the game for a couple of innings it limits the opposing team to how many batters come to the plate. A pitcher usually faces each batter more than once, but a closing pitcher will normally pitch to each batter once. This gives the closing pitcher an advantage over their batter. While a batter is expecting a specific pitch to be thrown and does not get it, the pitcher keeps them off balance long enough to get them out and face the next batter. After throwing two innings and keeping the score the same, a closing pitcher will have not only completed his task but also finished the
game. All pitchers play a substantial role in how the entire game unfolds. Although each pitcher has the same goal, their purposes differ. A starting pitcher is expected to begin the game, control every pitch, and lead their team through the majority of the game. The starter is then replaced by the reliever, whose expected to keep the pace of the game set by the starter, keep each batter guessing the pitch, and set the game up for the closing pitcher. The closing pitcher is brought in to stop any chances that the opposing team has of scoring and finish the game. The majority of people that see a pitcher on the mound think that they are no different than any other pitcher, but their innings, control, and role in the game help distinguish the exact type of pitcher on the mound.
Baseball has been of the longest living sports in our world today. The game started with the idea of a stick and ball and now has become one of the most complex sports known in our society. Several rules and regulations have been added to help enhance the game for everyone. Although baseball has endured several issues during its history and development of the game the game has still been a success throughout the world.
Berry College softball had a tremendous season in the spring of 2011. They recorded a 20 and 11 season, which is more than a 50 percent win-lose ratio, (Berry Athletics). Although this is a winning season, the team and the coaches expect improvements next season. The one area of improvement that could benefit the team is full defense. Full defense refers to the infield, outfield, and most importantly, the pitchers. Among the defense in the 2011 season, they committed 59 errors. Their opponents committed 73. Even though Berry had 14 fewer errors than their opponents, this can easily be reduced with extra defensive practice. It is critical to make the least amount of errors as possible. In addition to errors, ERA's are critical. ERA's are earned runs allowed. This average determines how effective pitchers are. For individuals who are not familiar with softball or baseball terms, there are two types of runs scored; runs that the opposing team have earned by base hits, and runs that are unearned by errors and walks. Last year, the two pitchers combined for a 2.97 ERA. This simply means that the pitchers on average allowed 2 to 3 runs a game. The individual leading pitcher ERA last season in the GSAC, (Great South Atlantic Conference), was 1.92, (www.greatsouth.org). Berry’s pitching staff allowed one additional run each game when compared to the leader of the GSAC. If we can minimize runs scored and commit fewer errors, we should be able to improve and win more games.
For people that don’t know how play softball here is how you play.there are two teams of 9 players or more at a maximum of probably a max of 15-16 players. They are trying to score more runs than the opposing team rounding bases and home plate as many times as possible. The batting team bats until the fielding team makes 3 outs on the other
Baseball statistics are meant to be a representation of a player’s talent. Since baseball’s inception around the mid-19th century, statistics have been used to interpret the talent level of any given player, however, the statistics that have been traditionally used to define talent are often times misleading. At a fundamental level, baseball, like any game, is about winning. To win games, teams have to score runs; to score runs, players have to get on base any way they can. All the while, the pitcher and the defense are supposed to prevent runs from scoring. As simplistic as this view sounds, the statistics being used to evaluate individual players were extremely flawed. In an attempt to develop more specific, objective forms of statistical analysis, the idea of Sabermetrics was born. Bill James, a man who never played or coached professional baseball, is often credited as a pioneer in the field and for coining the name as homage to the Society of American Baseball Research, or SABR. Eventually, the use of Sabermetrics became widespread in the Major Leagues, the first team being the Oakland Athletics, as depicted in Moneyball. Bill James and other baseball statisticians have developed various methods of evaluating a player performance that allow for a more objective view of the game, broadly defined as Sabermetrics.
Every team requires one, and some say it is the hardest position on the field to play. The hind-catcher is without a doubt a necessity to every ball team’s success. This is the position who can take command of the playing field. If played well, one can have a major impact on how smoothly a team plays together and affect the outcome of the game. There are many requirements for the person who plays the role of the catcher: something as simple as being prepared to play the positon, to having the responsibility of making sure the team has a good relationship with each other. However, the most obvious requirement is the athletic ability required and being physically able to play the position. The position of catcher is not an easy position to play, but is essential to the game of baseball.
The rules of baseball and softball are extremely complex, so only the basics are necessary to distinguish the sports. In both sports the primary rule is to advance the runner around the bases to home plate when the ball is hit. In baseball stealing the bases is another way to advance the runner, but this is not permitted in softball because the ball must be hit before a runner can leave the base. Baseball requires nine innings to complete a game, and softball only requires seven. The softball player is out if the last hit is a foul ball, while the baseball player stays at the plate until another strike is called or hits successfully. As one can see, a player that switches games must familiarize himself with the difference in the rules to succeed.
A team of players usually ranges from ten to forty players depending on how many people join the squad. The field consists of nine players on defense, as well as one batter at the plate playing offense. Of those nine players on the field, three play deep in the outfield (right, left, and center) who look to catch a ball hit in the air and get it back to the infield as quickly and efficiently as possible; if the ball drops then their goal is to hurry to the ball and get it back to the infield as quickly and efficiently as possible before the runner (after the ball is hit and the player gets on base because the ball wasn’t caught in the air, his title changes from a batter/hitter into a runner) advances to the next base.
“Batter up!” the umpire yelled from behind home plate on the diamond-shaped field for the inning to begin. Adrenaline rushed through the players’ veins as the crowd cheering echoed from the bleachers to the outfield. Softball and baseball are team sports which both require an umpire and a diamond shaped field. All players are important. Most aspects of the games are the same. Each team has only nine players on the field at nine different positions. Each inning ends when there are three outs. Baseball generally consists of nine innings, whereas softball usually is played in seven innings. People think that softball is not as tough as baseball because they think that softball is a soft sport. I have been playing softball for about ten years, but prior to that I played baseball. However, the game of softball is on a whole different level. Softball plays require much more speed, and there is a greater possibility of getting injured. The game of softball is more hazardous and fast-paced than baseball.
Baseball is not a difficult game to comprehend, but it can a very long time to achieve a high level of performance. Usually one starts playing this game at a very young age and the first thing they start out with is throwing. Throwing a baseball involves exploiting all major muscle groups in the body to generate a large torque on the arm that will in turn create a high potential for speed when it is released.
Most people might just assume that baseball is a boring game played with two teams that have nine players on each side, who both take turns hitting and going on defense. People sometimes think that the game is only nine innings, and the team with the most amount of runs in the end wins. But there is so much more to it than that and it's all thanks to mathematics. I have especially noticed this due to my personal engagement with baseball, it is the main sport I play and I play almost everyday for about 2 hours a day. I play for Stratford high school and baseball has had a large impact on my life which is a big reason why I wanted to do this particular topic. I love baseball and have played it for
A dedicated baseball player shows up ready to play and succeed in whatever situation may arise. Baseball is a mental game, and concentration is key to keeping a player mentally prepared. Baseball is both a fast and slow sport, as it is slow between pitches, but very intense during them. During pitches, it is a players time to regroup and think of all the situations that could arise during the next pitch. During the play, everything happens fast, and there is no time to think about what to do, it is all instinct, so the ability to avoid mental errors is crucial.
The first thing that you have to do in your wind up is to step back with your right foot behind the rubber. Second you have to swing you right foot up and balance on your left foot. Finally you have to push your left foot off of the mound while balancing and throw the ball towards the plate. After you throw the ball you have to be in a fielder’s position in case the ball is thrown hit back at you.
Baseball is a very well known sport and often known as “America’s pastime” and softball is highly similar, but with a few key differences. Many people just assume that the sport of baseball is more difficult than softball, but don’t actually know the specific parts of each of the two. Also, if you’ve never played one or the other sport, you shouldn’t be assuming anything at all in the first place. Although many assume one may be harder than the other, baseball and softball both have particular factors which make them both complex in their own way.
Baseball is a unique sport in many different ways. It is the only major competitive sport that has no time limit. The success of a player is determined on how well he can play as an individual and how well the team plays along with him. There are many rules that determine the success of a player’s performance. A baseball game is played with two teams and each team is permitted 25 players per team; however this is only true for professional teams. There are three parts to baseball: offense, pitching, and defense.
It is just the batter and the pitcher. Most of the times a hitter doesn’t realize that they are slumping until it is too late. When a hitter is slumping they look lost at the plate, lose confidence not only in their self but in their abilities. Personally, being in a slump is one of the worst feelings. You try to tweak your mechanics and even become superstitious to get that feeling of success back. This compares to Dante’s inferno because the longer the slump the deeper you lose confidence in your abilities and you begin to question yourself. A slump is a part of baseball that happens even to the best players. There is no way around it. For instance, this year the New York Yankees record breaking, All-star rookie, Aaron Judge, had a tremendous first half of the season in which he hit 30 home runs, had 66 rbi’s and a batting average of 329. Along the way of a great first half for any player, nevertheless a rookie, and fans were already considering him an MVP. Maybe the sky high expectations got to him in the second half but he went through a very long slump. There is no average time to how long a slump should be but this slump was unusually long. After the all-star break, Aaron Judge slowed down from his tremendous first half and tied an MLB record of 37 consecutive games with at least one strikeout. In comparison to Dante’s categories of hell, Aaron Judge would
