In her commencement address, “What Does a Woman Need to Know?”, Adrienne Rich reminds the graduating class of women of the importance of learning their history [of women] in order for them to realize their identity. She refers to education as a privilege because there is a myriad of other women who were not offered the opportunity to rise in society. While Rich congratulates the new wave of women going on to become doctors and lawyers, she warns them of the dangers of tokenism, or the practice of hiring a few women in order to give the appearance of gender equality in a workforce. Hart believes that the freedom of choice for general education requirements is too often abused. He calls courses focused on diversity such as Latino and Feminist Studies as wasteful and cluttering fads without any real important works. Instead, Hart recommends valuable and ordinary courses in European history and literature and Biblical studies. What does it mean to be a “citizen?” Explain why you agree or disagree with Hart that “The goal of education is to produce the citizen.” (write about one paragraph) According to Matthew Arnold, "the citizen [is] the person who, if need be, could re-create his civilization" (129). Personally, I disagree with Hart's view of education altogether. Although it is important for an individual to be well-rounded enough to have some knowledge in every level of civilization, I believe that it is nearly impossible for a human to be expected to retain all this information. Instead, they could practice their critical thinking ability in those "fad courses" pertaining to diversity, as their newfound civilization would be free from unnecessary cultural racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. Yet they would still be well-rounded enough to make well-informed decisions in diverse fields.
