This chapter reviews relevant literature on the determinants of the adoption and intensity of adoption of improved agricultural technologies, the impact of the adoption of these technologies on income among farm households and impact evaluation. The intention is to make synthesis of previous studies and also ascertain relevant gaps in the literature that can be filled with empirical research. The review has considered numerous issues with focus on adoption of technology, farmers’ perception about improved technologies, factors that determine farm household’s adoption decision, impact of technology adoption on income and impact of improved technology adoption on market participation. It also focuses on the analysis of theoretical review of previous studies in order to choose appropriate data analysis methods.

"The emergence of the basic paradigm for early diffusion research [was] created by two rural sociologists at Iowa State University, Bryce Ryan and Neal C. Gross" and gained recognition when they "published the results of their hybrid corn study"(Valente and Rogers, 1995, paragraph 1 ) in 1943. Post World War II agriculture experienced a boom in "technological innovation" and "as a result…U.S. farms became business enterprises rather than family-subsistence units…concerned with productivity, efficiency, competitiveness, and agricultural innovations"(Valente and Rogers, 1995, paragraph 11 ). These concerns lead to many agricultural studies based on the diffusion paradigm developed by Ryan and Gross. In their studies, Ryan and Gross were able to show that diffusion was a "social process through which subjective evaluations of an innovation spread from earlier to later adopters rather than one of rational, economic decision making" (Valente and Rogers, 1995, paragraph 22 ). Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) Theory has been used successfully in many fields including communication, agriculture, public health, criminal justice, social work, marketing, and nursing (Boston University of Public Health, 2013; Doyle, Garrett & Currie, 2013 ). There are five adopter categories: (1) innovators who want to be the first to try the innovation and counts for 2.5% of a specific population, (2) early Adopters who represent opinion leaders and counts for 13.5%, (3) early majority who are rarely leaders, but they do adopt new ideas before the average person and counts for 34%, (4) late majority who are skeptical of change, and will only adopt an innovation after it has been tried by the majority and counts for 34%, and (5) laggards who are bound by tradition and very conservative, and counts for 16%. Technology is unavoidable in our modern lifestyle. You wake up, you use technology; you use technology while cooking, while eating, while driving. While you’re lying in bed before you fall asleep, you use technology, technology wakes you up in the morning. Is all the technology around you good for you, or is it harmful to your health? Was our society healthier or safer before all the advancements? So many questions and concerns about all of the technology we crave, but there are very few people who know the answers. Technology affects all parts of human life. It can create jobs, motivate people to get active, and assist people in learning, but this does not balance out that there are dangers that follow the use of technology.
The most prominent of those scholars is Everett M. Rogers who is considered to be the foremost authority on the diffusion of innovation theory. He published his first book The Diffusion of Innovation in 1962, in it he compiled about five hundred different studies conducted by other researchers and from that he postulated that a unifying theory could explain why, how and at what rate innovations would be adopted by a certain culture (Singhal 2003). Adapting to technology is not simple. Some people tend to embrace change while others resist change (Wolski & Jackson, 1999). Before making a decision on whether to embrace technology or not, people may look at the practical and social consequences of accepting change.
Human culture and technology are continually co-evolving in a dynamic relationship. All technologies (See Note 1) develop in a particular cultural context as the result of changing needs or constraints. But once developed, a technology changes the culture that gave it birth. When a technology spreads to another culture, the cultural context affects the speed or way in which the technology is adopted and how it is used. The diffusion of technologies to other cultures changes those other cultures as well. The changes in culture that one technology creates may then influence the development of another or different technology.
Researchers examining technology adoption have argued that an organizational environment critically affects employees’ adoption and use of information technology. An organizational environment that supports innovation generally facilitates the learning and adjustment required for employees to understand and accept technology-induced changes (Tarafdar et al., 2010), thus reducing stress induced by new technology. As agriculture has become more intensive, farmers have become capable of producing higher yields using less labour and less land. Growth of the agriculture has not, however, been an unmixed blessing. It, like every other thing, has its pros and cons. Topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, the decline of family farms, continued neglect of the living and working conditions for farm labourers, increasing costs of production, and the disintegration of economic and social conditions in rural communities. These are the cons of the new improved agriculture.

Farmers in many developing countries are operating in an environment of inadequate infrastructure like roads, electricity, and communications; poor soils; lack of storage and processing capacity; and little or no access to agricultural technologies that could increase their profits and improve their livelihoods. Recent unrest over food prices in a number of countries may tempt policymakers to put the interests of urban consumers over those of rural people, including farmers, but this approach would be shortsighted and counterproductive. Given the scale of investment needed, aid donors should also expand development assistance to agriculture, rural services, and science and technology.

The areas looked are: how technology has affected the communication, transportation, education, health, economic activities, environment, food production, food conservation and preservation and food distribution. It has gone further to explain how technology has radically changed the demographic structure of the societies in question, specifically Japan society. In addition, it has discussed how technology has influenced government policy formulation.
