Renowned and engaging speakers have the ability to connect their values and ideas to greater causes and principles, leaving an enduring impact on the audience. You may be questioning what makes a great speaker? And what qualities and features contribute to the formation of a powerful speech? It is understood that a great speaker has the ability to communicate to larger truths and carve those truths on the audience’s hearts and minds as they surpass the context, place and time of the deliverance of the speech, and focus on conveying their ideas and values.
In Coercion, Douglas Rushkoff explains how easily people are easily coerced. For example, Rushkoff states that people are convinced by car salesman to pay more for a car than they wanted to. In Julius Caesar, Marc Antony asks to speak at the funeral of his dear friend, Julius Caesar, after one of the murderers, Brutus, speaks. Brutus convinces the Romans that Caesar would be a tyrant if he did not murder him, while Antony convinces the Romans that Caesar is not ambitious and there would never be another ruler like Caesar. When he told the key ideas, he’d project his voice so that people would know it was a key point. However, he acted to say the words from his heart with a low volume and slow speed. When he talked about his childhood dreams, we can really feel that his passion through his facial expression, verbal delivery and so forth. What is it that makes a speech so powerful? Is it fancy wording, a pleasurable accent, or the message and reason for the speech in the first place? Take a look at a couple of speeches considered great from not-so-distant history. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech to over 200,000 people in Washington D.C. that was a massive push for equal and civil rights. Winston Churchill gave a speech to the House of Commons, urging others to yearn for victory as he did. But what makes these speeches so great? At the time when each was given—a time stemming social and political unrest—each speech was given to and well received by audience that those speeches concerned. has a reputation to be one of the most important public speakers in the United States. He has been a citizen, a leader, a speaker, and will go down in history. Even though Cicero was a prominent orator and lawyer in the Roman society, he never influenced a country’s lifestyle. However, Cicero is also a part of human history as one of the ancient Latin writers who triggered the art of oration. “De Inventione,” a literary work of a genius, is credible for providing the necessary steps to bring about genuine rhetoric. This knowledge has been passed on and salvaged for modern society to educate themselves. MLK, for example, has shown all the aspects Cicero described in his treatise on persuasive speaking, including the use of rhetorical devices, eloquent style, and powerful
This may partially be true, but many speeches and speakers’ actions are remembered from the history because speaker makes a connection between himself and audiences. “The unique thing about public speaking is not the content or even the style of the words; it is the fact that the words are spoken in the company of others in a common, shared space.” (Crick, XX) In todays world it may be easier to send a text message or e-mail but oral communication can not reduced its importance because face-to-face interaction and participation in conversation create dramatic moments that allow remembering the speech. Additionally, “You could write hundreds of pages of briefs and you are still never absolute sure that the judges is focused on exactly what you want him to focus on in that brief.” (Bright, 1986, 36) A speaker can change the direction of conversations just by looking at the audiences’ facial expressions, but writing is open to any discussion and misunderstandings. Maybe a written word is more memorable, but it does not matter being persuasive and being remembered if the message is
These lessons can be applied to any public speaker. Even if you can’t pick where your speech is, you should try your best to make a part of your speech match the room, city, or state that you are in. This allows you to better connect with your audience. Furthermore, as for connecting with your audience, Reagan’s use of Pathos remains
