I am an international student from China who is going to graduate from Birmingham City University with a degree in Computing Business E-Systems and Technology. This is a personal statement on applying for the postgraduate study at the University of Durham. To achieve a master degree is a goal in my life plan, when I decided to study bachelor's degree in the U.K. During two years of academic study of computer science in Birmingham City University, I enjoyed the British approach to education. It offers an opportunity for students to implement their plan, develop their interest and discover their strengths and weaknesses. In Birmingham City University, I have learnt what I am required to do and I am interested in the field of Information System Development. My interest in Information System Development is increased, when I excelled in requirements analysis on Information Systems Development. I gained database technique in the courses ‘Database for Business’ and ‘Database Architecture and Administration’ and researched theoretical basis for Information System Development Methodolo...
I have always set big goals, and had even bigger dreams. However, these dreams aren’t like those of some of my classmates such as becoming a movie star or a famous soccer player, but ones of curing cancer and providing the world with answers to scientific phenomena. Should the Gatton Academy provide me the chance to take the next step toward fulfilling these dreams, very little would prevent me from attending.
The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip-flop between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis—an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans—the June before, and I had my Bar-Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I had become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges with gusto, attempting to see the silver lining from the very beginning. I cannot say that I am glad I was nature’s statistical anomaly, but I am thankful for the opportunity to see from a young age how to turn a tough situation into a positive. After almost nine years, I come back to this pivotal night in my life because it marked a change that still plays a part in my life now, and will continue to shape me in the future.
Probably the most important turning point in my life happened in 1992. At this time, I was eight years old and living in Williamsport Pennsylvania. My dad had a well-paying job at Anchor Darling Valve Company, I was attending a parochial school and I thought life was just great. At the time we lived in a large four-story house with a separate three-story garage and an acre of forest for a backyard. I had a ten-speed bicycle and I would often go bicycling with my friends at the nearby cemetery. No-one ever objected to this, in fact people would often have picnics at the top of this hill at the cemetery. I guess the only things I ever complained about were the constant music lessons and practice sessions my parents subjected me to.
Travelling around the world gives an individual a unique perspective of life, culture and tolerance. In the tenth grade, I had the opportunity to embark on a journey which provided me with a unique perspective and view of humanity. Similar to my other trips to Europe my initial intention was to enjoy two-weeks away from school in continental Europe, however I was flabbergasted when I realized this two-week trip would serve to destroy my idealist view of a pluralistic society. I was destined for Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic to study the Holocaust.
The personal challenge that I faced mainly dealt with my health. Ever since I was child, I was very sick physically. The doctor recommended that I not play or participate in any type of sports because of my poor health. This led to a lack of confidence in myself to perform my best. I have always thought that there was a barrier somewhere in my life, and I could not pass that barrier because if I did then my life would certainly be in ruins. I was raised with the philosophies of the Chinese. I was told that no one could perform many tasks at once and be successful. Ever since, I always have an image that if I participated in activities at school then I would do poorly in my school work. I never pushed my limits to the maximum to challenge myself. It was as if there was a wall standing in front of me blocking me from being successful. I was always afraid that the consequences might be permanent and my grades would drop.
“Constant efforts, dedication, devotion and determination are the key to success” This principle I have followed in my career. Setting goals and striving hard to accomplish them has always been my strength in professional as well as personal life. I have always been amazed by computers, code –programs and was keen to understand the underlying meaning, gimmick, structure and pattern of how programs actually work. Learning about simple Foxpro programs, excel sheet formulae, C programs at an early age heightened my interest in computer programs. This childhood interest urged me to do a diploma in information technology and later bachelor’s degree in the same area. I have chosen the five-year double-degree program in Laurier which aims to educate students in both areas of commerce and computer science. I am confident that my chosen program will help me in my future career plans and fulfill my desire to learn more knowledge. Personally, I have always dreamed to become a successful business woman who would promote local businesses to grow and expand to the international market. This is because I have been inspired by a video which talks about child poverty in the United Kingdom. It was extremely heartbreaking and in my opinion, the only method to effectively reduce and eliminate poverty would be positive economic growth and business expansion. Moreover, I am extremely interested in business because it also

I loved learning the way how something such as computers can look simple and easy to understand but inside it is a maze everything is working together to become one solo object that has come so far in such a short time and how it has developed and still is. This is why I'm also interested in studying Information Technology Management. I wish to attend university because I want to develop and expand my skills which I know university will offer to me. I have many ambitions and I feel university can help me thrive and help me towards my

Once an organization decides to implement an information system, there are four components that must be considered. The information system includes two sub-systems, technical subsystem and a social subsystem. The technical subsystem includes technology and business processes (McCubbrey, 2009). Within the social system, there are two parts: people and organizational structure. This paper will discuss each of these components and its importance when designing and implementing an information system.
I am hopeful that my previous studies in Santiago, my maturity and my experience in this field will allow me to enter the second year of an undergraduate programme in the UK. After completing my undergraduate it is my wish to continue studying at postgraduate level and ultimately conduct my own research in this area.
