APPROACHES TO DECISION MAKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING Marnishia Bee Concorde Career College What is Decision Making? Decision making is the process of considering alternatives and choosing among them. Some Psychologists and Scientists who study Decision making states that humans make decisions by thoroughly examine all alternatives and then choose the one that will be most beneficial to them. In 1956 Herbert Simon introduced the notion of bounded rationality. Bounded rationality means that boundaries, or limitations, around the decision making process prevent it from being logical. More often we base our decisions on strategies and educated guesses (Wood, Wood, Boyd 2013). Additive strategy is a decision making method in which each alternative is evaluated on each of the important elements affecting the decision and the alternative with the highest overall rating is chosen. The Additive strategy assumes that the high ratings on one factor compensate for low ratings on another. This strategy is useful but it does not support the fact that some factors are more important than the others. Elimination by aspects is a decision making method in which changes are evaluated against criteria that have been ranked according to importance. This …show more content…
The second heuristic that is used for problem solving is working backward in many cases called backward search. It is a strategy in which a person creates the steps they need to solve a problem describing a preferred goal and working backward to the existing condition. The third heuristic is means-end analysis this in strategy the present position is compared with the chosen goal and a sequence of steps are expressed and taken to close the space between them. Many large problems must be broken down into lesser steps before a solution can be reached (Wood, Wood, Boyd
A decision is a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration. Everyday, people run into difficult decisions. The choices you make in your life define you as a person. In choice to kill his best friend, in the short story “Honor” The Servant has to choose what lengths he is willing to go to bury his son himself, and in another short story “ Gentlemen, Your Verdict” the commander lieutenant Oram has to make the best decision is when they are faced with a sinking ship and little oxygen left.
The rational decision theory is a method for thoroughly selecting among possible choices that are built on reasoning and facts. With a decision, making process one may employ a series of logical steps to overview relevant facts, observations, and potential outcomes before choosing a specific course of action.
It has been noted from the text that our perception influences the thinking and decisions we make. It shows that choices differ because of the different understanding that individual have. In addition, our intuition is essential and at many times it provides us with guidance on how to make decisions. However, we can see that this intuition can be misleading at times and therefore the best thing is to evaluate the available evidence before making decisions. In my view decision making tends to have disciplinary across individuals. The best thing can be is to take time and individuals should not rush when it comes to making critical decisions. It is because of the outcomes that might be expected in the

This paper explores the legal, ethical and moral issues of three healthcare colleagues by applying the D-E-C-I-D-E model as a foundation of decision making as found in Thompson, Melia, and Boyd (2006). Issues explored will be those of the actions of registered nurse (RN) John, his fiancé and also registered nurse (RN) Jane and the Director of Nursing (DON) Ms Day. Specific areas for discussion include the five moral frameworks, autonomy, beneficence, Non – maleficence, justice and veracity in relation with each person involved as supported by Arnold and Boggs (2013) and McPherson (2011). An identification and review of the breached code of ethics and the breached code of conduct in reference with the Nursing, Council, and Federation (2008) will be addressed. Lastly a brief discussion on how the three schools of thought deontology, teleology and virtue had effects on each colleague (McPherson, 2011) .
As humans, would like to think we are rational in our decisions, especially for major decisions that will affect our lives or the lives of others in the long run. Nonetheless all decisions form from the foundations of our attitudes where they can stem from internal or external factors.
In their 1973 article they declared that the ways for solving problems by linear method for problem solving are over and this is the effect of the change in the modern society and increasing social complexities which makes it difficult to define the problems and also that the dependency is based on political reasoning. [ 1] According to the complexities involved in the problem, and methodologies used for solving the problems, planning problems can be categorized into three categories, Tame problems, Wicked problems and Super wicked problems.... ... middle of paper ... ...
The decision-making model not as simple as selfish or self-interest, it’s the “theory of human choice based on scientific principles of observation and experiment”, but not “postulation and deduction” (page 397). Observation reflects it has been learned or acknowledged from patient look or research about the cause and effect, experiment means it has been thought, be consider the pros and cons. Even though it might not be think over and think through, it must be different than “creating something out of nothing”. There are four princi...
There are various approaches towards a certain problem or strategy. Some approaches could fit in a given situation and not in another. Analytical/planned and emergent approaches have some differences as well as benefits and drawbacks. Analytical approach is that in which the vision, objectives and intentions of a firm are clearly stipulated and made known to the actors or staff as a way of realizing a certain outcome. It requires a clear vision, plans as well as formal controls aimed at enforcing them in a predictable environment. In this approach, external factors such as advancement in technology and change
Rational choice theory, also known simply as choice theory, is the assessment of a potential offender committing a crime. Choice theory is the belief that committing a crime is a rational decision, based on cost-benefit analysis. The would-be offender will weigh the costs of committing a particular crime: fines, jail time, and imprisonment versus the benefits: money, status, and heightened adrenaline. Depending on which factors outweigh the other, a criminal will decide to commit or forgo committing a crime. This decision-making process makes committing a crime a rational choice.
Decision making, as taken from the Wikipedia (2006) encyclopedia, is defined as "the cognitive process leading to the selection of a course of action among alternatives. Every decision making process produces a final choice called a decision. It can be an action or an opinion. It begins when we need to do something but we do not know what. Therefore, decision-making is a reasoning process which can be rational or irrational, and can be based on explicit assumptions or tacit assumptions." (para.1). Decisions made by using a decision-making model typically result in better decisions. Decisions resulting from the model tend to be more consistent since the same steps are followed each time. Increased thoroughness of decision options considered is another benefit in using a decision-making model, as numerous factors are taken into account.
Individuals make economic decision based on a variety of reasons. The rational is based on each individual’s need or desire for a commodity. People go through several decision-making processes before making the final decision and are often not conscious of the process. Obviously, decision- making covers a wide area, involving virtually the whole of human action. Often people are not conscious of the process.
An employee does an unsatisfactory job on an assigned project. Explain the attribution process that this person's manager will use to form judgments about this employee's job performance.
Therefore, to achieve this objective, managers have to make choices in decision-making, which is the process of selecting a course of action from two or more alternatives (Weihrich & Koontz; 1994, 199). A sound decision making requires extensive knowledge of economic theory and the tools of economic analysis, that are directly related in the process of decision-making. Since managerial economics is concerned with such economic theories and tools of analysis, it is very relevant to the managerial decision-making process.
Heuristic problem solving can include intelligent guesswork, common sense, emotional thinking, short cut decision making, utilizing algorithmic thinking, experimentation, along with trial and error methods. Heuristic problem solving is an ongoing process and involves multiple decisions making processes that lead to the resolution of the problem. The Heuristic thinking process is considered a very natural thinking process for learning how to solve a problem.
