When most people think of an addict, what may come to mind is a homeless person on the side of street, dirt under their nails asking for change to buy their next handle of vodka, a chain smoker with yellow teeth and a raspy voice, or even the neighbors son who was arrested after breaking into their parents house to steal money for more heroin. The dictionary defines an addict as “a person who is addicted to an activity, habit, or substance” (Addict). They then define addicted as “devoted or given up to a practice or habit or to something psychologically or physically habit forming” (Addicted). (Addict)(Addiction)When speaking to the general public, most define an addict as a person who knowingly harms their body to obtain a certain feeling, spends their money irresponsibly to obtain a high, or whose mind becomes so consumed by a substance or thing that they cannot function normally without it. Within these definitions, it can be argued that the everyday person …show more content…
Again, sex is an important factor in the survival of the human race, but it has turned into an addiction when we risk our health to get it and when people let it consume their minds. According to Top Ten Reviews, every second 28,000 people are viewing a porn site and every 39 minutes a new porn video is made in the United States (Internet). Every weekend people will risk their health and even safety to satisfy a need by having one night stands with people they had just met, resulting in the startling statistic that 79 million Americans have HPV, the most common STI, with around 14 million new people becoming infected yearly (Genital). Even if it 's not the physical act, sex appeal is everywhere. It 's on a child 's favorite television show, it 's on the billboards that are passed on the freeway or on Carl’s Jr commercials with scantily clad women eating oversize cheeseburgers. For decades society has been marketed with sex because companies know there is a natural
There are many different definitions in which people provide regarding addiction. May (1988) describes that addiction “is a state of compulsion, obsession, or preoccupation that enslaves a person’s will and desire” (p. 14). Individuals who suffer from addiction provide their time and energy toward other things that are not healthy and safe. The book

Addiction /ə-ˈdik-shən, a-/ noun 1. A strong and harmful need to regularly have something (such as a drug) or do something (such as gamble), 2. An unusually great interest in something or a need to do or have something (Addiction). Addiction can cause a person to sabotage their lives in order to get their next fix, whether that be scoring another gram of coke or a double with cheese, a large fry, and a large soda. Addicts are stuck in a constant cycle of getting cravings, going through with their ritual, using, experiencing guilt, and being emotionally triggered, thus bringing them back to the beginning. Now, most people when they hear the word “addiction”, the first thing that comes to their mind is drugs. However, if a vast majority of individuals
Hyper Sexual addiction is a disorder that can be defined as a person having a habitually elevated sex drive, fantasies, and urges. Nevertheless, compared to other sexual addictions, this could be known as one of the most riskiest and dangerous addiction. Hyper Sexual Addiction has become more prevalent because of the infidelities amongst some celebrities and political figures. Sexual addiction has always existed, but because of technology and social media, people have become more aware of it. People who suffer from this disorder are like drug addicts that crave drugs; they think they can stop, but the urges are constantly there. According to An Elements Behavioral Health article (2016), for the sex addict, sexual activity provides an intense,
While alleged sex addictions have existed for many years, they have only recently been accepted as valid excuses for sexual deviancy. Attitudes toward sex addiction in the past offer a stark contrast to how it is viewed today, as the constantly medicalizing society insists on putting everything under the technical microscope. Sex addiction is commonly associated with a person’s inability to control his sexual behavior, implying an abnormally high sex drive and obsession with sex which have negative effects on his personal life (MedicineNet 2007, 1). Rather than breaking down the science behind the disorder, a customary practice in today’s medicalized society, older attitudes towards sex addiction placed it under the same light as alcoholism, where a lack of control and unwillin...
When people hear the words drug addict, these words have negative connotations and stigmas attached to them. People visualize a person who does not care about anything, including family, work, or commitments, except for obtaining money to buy drugs to get high. However, there are many people who are drug addicts that maintain a normal, functioning life. Before we can examine why these people are addicted to drugs, one must first define the word addict.
Addiction is a word that, despite being used on a daily basis, is misconstrued by the public. Johann Hari addresses this issue in a Ted Talk he calls, “Everything we know about addiction is wrong,” which he performed to the public in 2015. Merely based upon the title of the Ted Talk, it was evident Hari’s intention was to raise awareness on the subject of addiction. The crowd was more apt to be open-minded to the argument, considering the fact that they paid to attend the Ted Talk, and as a result of this, Hari did not fail in achieving the proper audience. Hari argued that addiction isn’t all as it seems, and thus went about the Talk explaining how, if we went about treating addiction and addicts differently, the number of recovering addicts would increase. Hari began his argument strongly by providing the audience with
Main Point: What defines an addiction? According to Psychology Today, “Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance…. or engages in an activity….that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health.” This can range anywhere from drug use to eating disorders, to gambling, to even texting in today’s generation. Shocking to say the least, especially when most people do not even know they are addicted or are an addict until they realize this definition.
Addiction is a very strong word that brings along many negative connotations. When we think of an addiction we imagine someone who depends on a certain substance, most likely alcohol to have their needs met. Addiction is defined by the Webster dictionary as, "a compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal." Even though our society sees addiction and only applies the word to drug addicts and alcoholics, there is a much wider range of subjects that fall under the umbrella of what an addiction truly is. An addiction is a dependency on any kind of materialistic object that you use on a day to day basis that brings
Pornograhy consumption has increased markedly over the last few decades, primarily due to the advent and popularity of regular, affordable, and high speed internet connections (Eberstadt & Layden 13; "The History of Modern Pornography."). While pornography has been around for thousands of years, never has porn been as used or abused (8). Porns’s vivid and explixcit imagery causes healthy pereceptions of sexuality to be skewed, causing true intimacy to be lost amidst a desensitized sexual libido (Struthers 1; “What’s Wrong With Pornography?” 1; Dubinsky 1; Zillmann 27). Pornography as defined by the United Methodist Church promotes “violence, abuse, coercion, domination, humiliation, or degradation for the purpose of arousal”, all being obvious negatives (1). Porn has been linked to higher divorce rates, sexual violence, sex trafficking, brain chemistry changes, relational problems. Porn affects both the church culture and the society as a whole. These high reaching problems call for the high impacting changes that new regulations can bring. Strong regulation will provide a stopgap to the national epidemic in it’s tracks.
The many personalities of this world are phenomenal because they are all so different. Not one individual is the same, and that is one thing that makes the human brain as fascinating as it is. The human brain is quite beautiful; unfortunately, biochemical or other brain changes can alter proper functioning of the human brain, leading to mental disorders or diseases. Sexual addiction, although not always recognized, is a severe condition which affects many. Sexual addiction should be widely acknowledged as a severe issue because of its impact on the addict's nervous system, the root of its development, and its relevance to human behavior.
Sexual addictions of any kind can continue to progress in stages that may include child pornography, violence and pain, prostitution, rape and even serial killing. The overexposure of sexual imagery is creating a tolerance not only to the images presented but also to the crimes that go along the continuous craving for more and more extreme pornographic material to satisfy a sexual need. The key here is that people are after more and more sex, not a sexual relationship. The relationship part is gone and sadly, people just want to live the moment, satisfy a sexual need and walk away without any regard to the damage they might cause.
Lack of knowledge and research about female sex addiction led to a tendency to think of hypersexual behavior as a male problem. Men are more likely to have some recognizable ways of acting out sexually such as having anonymous sexual hook-ups or compulsively watching pornography. But women can also be sex addicts, although, in their case, it might be more difficult to get a correct diagnosis and a proper treatment. What is Sex Addiction? Male vs. Female Acceptance of the Condition Sex addiction, also known as hypersexual disorder, has been typically described only in the male realm, so the fact that studies on female sex addiction is pretty poor does not come as a surprise.
Numerous people do not comprehend why or just how a person develops a drug addicted. It can be presumed that drug abusers have no moral code or willpower. Many people believe that people that are addict to drugs can leave the addiction by choosing to stop, and not feeding their addiction. In truth, drug addiction is a multifaceted illness, to quit takes more than good intentions. Society has a mental image of what a drug addict looks like. However, a person addict to drugs can be anyone, at any age, and any social standing. This mental illness will not discriminate on gender, age, color or race.
