Addiction by definition is 'out of control'. In the middle of addiction there are times when you may feel like alcohol or drugs have dominated your thinking and as a result you have little to say about the direction of your life.

In order to break out of denial you realize you use alcohol or drugs to excess and it's causing problems in your life. At least this is a good starting point. You may be ready to accept that you need to look beyond yourself to others who may be more stable than you are at this time.

Make a decision
Choices can be difficult to make when your addicted. The overwhelming decision seems to be get alcohol or your drug of choice and get high. A better choice is to realize what other options you have that are not alcohol or drug related. When much of your life is consumed by addiction this decision-making may take a lot of effort. You are worth what it takes to get clean and sober. The key here is to make a decision that isn't alcohol or drug related.

Reach out to someone not addicted
When your addiction is out of control you may feel a bit isolated from people who aren't addicted. You need to have people among your friends who you can talk to without the risk of being influenced to use.
