The end of our academic year holds great excitement for me, as I expect an outcome of graduation with my first degree, an Honours B.A. of Psychology; and hopefully the opportunity to be published in a scientific research journal with the results of my thesis experiment. I envision having feelings of confidence and satisfaction upon the completion of this vigorous task. I believe my persistence through this semester will ultimately determine the height of my academic standing come graduation this June. I find myself feeling somewhat “burnt out” as I am enrolled in five courses and am completing a thesis project during this semester. Further, our course section on identifying adaptive challenges, bettered my understanding of conflict resolution, providing me with new strategies to apply in my academic and personal life, and ultimately improving my ability to be a successful student. I was fascinated reading about the division of technical versus adaptive leadership approaches, and how and when they should be taken. I felt like this concept leaves a lot of room for interpretation, and critical thinking when assessing a situation or conflict; especially from the adaptive approach. Technical challenges are left to those of expertise in correcting specified fields; yet at the same time, “it is essential that a leader also know when [their] authority is not sufficient or appropriate to address a particular challenge” (264), and an adaptive approach is taken “when people’s beliefs, attitudes, and values are affected by a problem” (264). As a social psychology student, knowledge of new approaches is always helpful when contemplating theories and studying human interaction. I am interested in possibly studying the approach of adaptive leadership in role playing within a controlled design setting, to investigate how well humans can adopt this role, in pairs. From the path-goal theory approach, I will need a leader who initiates structure, guiding me through the instructions about each new task and lesson, “what is expected of [me], how it is to be done, and timelines” (117), but who is also supportive, promotes participative leadership and achievement oriented. Leonard Wong discusses how the versatile and unpredictable enemy and situations in Iraq produces adaptable junior officers. These officers are learning to make decisions under chaotic conditions and are becoming more mentally agile. The Army is changing. The Army is transforming its capabilities in the war in Iraq to be effective and successful. General Schoomaker states that we will not accomplish our goals as a nation in the 21st century unless our Army becomes much more agile but with the capacity for long term, sustained level of conflict. I think you have done a great job contrasting the two cases through the steps of adaptive leadership. I think your observation "the board got worried that the University would not bring in enough students and they let the President go." I think this illustrates the point of how the President was not communicating with stakeholders at the university such as the board. This lack of communication led to the fear that the board felt, which led to his removal.

In his definition adaptive leadership is defined as “learning required to address conflicts in the values people hold, or to diminish the gap between the values people stand for and the reality they face. Path-goal theory deals with the leader's style to motivate followers, to accomplish set goals (Northouse, 2010). The path-goal theory is simply the implication that a leader works with an individual to establish a goal. The leader does this by individual motivation to achieve the proposed goal, while working through obstacles that may hinder achieving that goal (Whitener, 2007). The basic assumption of path-goal theory is that the following motivates subordinates: the capability to perform the work, their efforts will result in a certain outcome, and the payoff will be worthwhile (Whitener, 2007). The path-goal theory is a pragmatic approach that the leader uses to motivate the followers to achieve the set goals.
Issues arise when they try to treat an adaptive issue as a technical one. This diffuses the problem and doesn’t create sustainable, positive change. When a challenge is adaptive, values, beliefs, roles, relationships, and approaches need to be altered. A leader will understand this and try to implement an approach to create these alterations in the system. Though, adaptive changes are a longer process and may require intervention throughout the process to ensure success. As said in the article, “you know you’re dealing with some- thing more than a technical issue when people’s hearts and minds need to change, and not just their preferences or routine behaviors” (Heifetz and Linsky, 10). For myself, even in relationships and friendships, I have experienced individuals wanting to take a fast solution approach to a conflict. As a person who is for the most part uncomfortable with change, it is important that I find ways be a leader in a world that is ever changing. In order to be the best and most prepared leader as possible, it is necessary to be aware of one’s core identity and the values, talents, and strengths that are included in this. When reflecting on my leadership styles, strengths and weaknesses I am rushed with thoughts, memories, regrets and actions of personal ways that I have handled past situations in the work place and ways that I plan to handle new situations at my new work place. I have had many successes with the way I handle my leadership role but there are also things that I wish that I could go back in time and change. The way some situations are handled, I think to myself, well this could have been done differently or I could have done this instead of what I did to enhance the outcome of the situation. There is always room for improvement in whatever job or task someone takes on and this is just one of those things. During the development of my PLAP, I have had the chance to weigh out my strengths and weaknesses of my leadership and it has been very effective to seeing where improving needs to be met. The plan has also let me evaluate the direction I hope to head in to achieve my leadership goals.
Leaders will no matter what have an influence on our world. They have missions, dreams and ambition, and with these things they are bound to go far. For leaders, what makes these dreams come true is having strong qualities such as leadership practices, values and strengths. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things.
