I have a background in surgical nursing, especially neurological problems and traumatic injuries from working as a registered nurse for three years and teaching assistant for a year after graduating the bachelor’s degree in Nursing (First class honors) from Khon Kaen University in 2008. This is a reason why I am interested in acute stroke care. While I worked as a teaching assistant, I found that further study was important for my profession and goal. research to completely conduct my thesis “Relationships among responses to symptom, mode of transportation, and hospital arrival time of the acute stroke patients” in 2013-2014. Fortunately, my research was supported by the Stroke North-eastern Research Group in Thailand. I have improved my time management skills and developed interpersonal skills as a reflection by completely accomplishing the Master’s degree on time. In addition, I have desired to be a researcher in behavior response to emergency conditions and awareness of acute illness patients. This is why I, then, conducted the study about “a quality of emergency medical dispatch system: a literature review” supported by the National Institute for Emergency Medicine of Thailand in 2016. I, eventually, became as a team member of the quality improvement of the emergency medical service project, the National Institute for Emergency Medicine in the same year. For my research interest, I concentrate on gender differences and social contexts associated with decision-making about seeking medical help after stroke symptoms. To be precise, females among acute stroke patients likely suffer more severe strokes and have a greater risk of unfavorable outcomes than males that may be the result of the hospital arriving delay. My integrative review showed that the onset-to-hospital times are different between females and males, particularly in Asian-Pacific and Middle Eastern regions and the evidence revealed that presenting symptoms and responses to symptoms may be the causes of pre-hospital delay in women. Nevertheless, the evidence in a comparison of behaviors among female and male patients is lacking. Therefore, understanding of behavior response to stroke symptoms in women and the modifiable factors which strongly influence the decision-making process and prehospital time among women, are especially needed in this population.

My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. I am willing to learn and use those skills and knowledge acquired to provide something meaningful to the society and humanity. “Time is brain” is the repeated catch phrase when addressing the treatment and management of stroke (Saver, 2006). Access to prompt and appropriate medical care during the first few hours of stroke onset is critical to patient survival and outcomes. Recent changes in the guidelines for acute stroke care released by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Stroke Association (ASA) have improved patient access to treatment. Stroke treatment now follows the model of myocardial infarction treatment. Hospitals are categorized into four levels based on stroke treatment capability. The most specialized treatment is available in comprehensive stroke centers followed by primary stroke centers, acute stroke-ready hospitals, and community hospitals. The use of telemedicine now enables even community hospitals, with limited specialized capabilities, to care for stroke patients. Telemedicine puts emergency hospital personnel in contact with neurologists providing expertise in the evaluation of a stroke patient and determination of their eligibility for treatment with thrombolytic medication (Jefferey, 2013).
Working with new graduate nurses has instilled in me the goal to share my knowledge and expertise with others and to teach others the art of nursing. My short-term goals are to complete the Master’s program by the summer of 2014. My second goal is to secure a job as a nurse educator at a hospital and work with my nurse manager to provide program like in-service to the hospital staff and students. I would like to incorporate my education from State University’s master’s program to assist hospital staff and patients in their learning process, with the use of new technology to facilitate the learning and understanding.

Learning is considered a long term goal as it helps in continuity and evolution professionally (Thibault, 2011). It is important for me to be updated for best possible care provision. I will achieve this by developing interest to study towards attainment of highest levels of education for example PHD programs, attending education forums hosted by different universities, workshops and health seminars. My other long term ambitions include joining nurses’ professional organizations, administration duties and management skill acquisition and job promotions.
I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
It is very fascinating the most of the universities are having online courses for nurses to get their higher education, while nurses are struggling between the work and home. Currently most of the hospitals in the United Sates are moving towards magnet status which needed higher educated nurses. In this situation, it is blessing for nurses to attain their higher education through online course even for associate RNs to become BSN. The BSN program helps the nurses in many ways including to utilizing the process to the full scale and it will promote nurses to use their skills like educating the patient as we’ll as creating new nurses. Because of the new health care reform, the BSN program also will aid to fill the gap from the influx of patients. The baccalaureate degrees and BSN program helps and prepares for the significant part they going to play in reinforcing the new healthcare modification. At present, I utilize and develop nursing care plan in the nursing process even though it needs some corrections due to the nature of my work. The highest standards of nursing could be only done through better research and advanced training. All these process will not only aid to create a healthcare model based on the clinicians wants, but also based on better data from the research which will eventually help to direct them towards right direction.
Adult Nursing is a very rewarding career which provides endless opportunities. I would describe myself as a caring and compassionate person. I believe I possess these qualities naturally. I am compelled to put other people’s needs before my own. I can contribute my personal qualities to this course of being dedicated and determined into committing myself to this 3 year course and excelling academically. Personally, caring for my mother with high blood pressure made me interested in the world of medicine. This long term sickness inspired me to gain more experience outside of the home and volunteer which confirmed that this was the right course for me. According to NMC code of conduct (2009), Nurses’ role is to provide a high standard of practice and care at all times and keep skills and knowledge up to date can provide a safe environment for treatment of a patient. Therefore by updating myself with skills, I will enhance my teaching skills too. I believe in myself and will keep my conviction and dedication to not stop learning and strive to push myself until I can finally tell myself one day when I look back, that I have done everything I can and I have no regrets.
